Well it's 2am, just got in so thought I would check the wx. Didn't do much more than spit for a few minutes while I was out so no suprise to see not much rain around Melbourne tonite - Bit dissapointing. Where are the gales for tonite? All AWS in the hills reporting Calm (maybe snowed over?). From the MSLP charts, seems like the front is holding back a bit but should come through soon. Radar and IR shows another band of the speckled stuff starting to push in off the coast (already hit Portland - 9mm), plus one nice chunky cell off the prom with a small area of 20-40mm/h. Also some very organised, fine structured mountain waves off the ranges East of Sydney - pretty. Q: Will snow cause radar to underestimate precipitation rates? Anyway, we're probably going to head to Falls Creek backcountry on Tuesday for our first turns of 2000 due to the, so far, dominant westerly component - all good, bigger hills around there anyway #8-) Cheers, Lyle. - - ---==( lyle_pakula at hotmail.com )==--- - - . / \ . /~~~\/ \ " No Friends On A Powder Day " / \ \ / \ \ +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 May 2000 14:21:23 -0400 From: "Leslie R. Yes, in general. Snow has a dielectric constant of ~ .19, while water has one of .93. In other words, water is a much better electrical conductor than is ice, and water is a much more efficient reflector than is snow. But beware of 'wet' snow, which is a very good reflector and tends to act as large rain drops. When that is the case reflectivities can range from + 30 dBZ to > + 60 dBZ (similar to heavy rain and hail). If the temperature is near freezing, such as +1 to - 2.5 C or thereabouts, then the snow is 'wet' and will result in these high reflectivities, just as wet sleet will. But once the temp is ~ - 4 C or lower, light snow will have reflectivities of ~ - 10 to + 15 dBZ (this would normally be drizzle or very light rain depending on radar sensitivity). From + 15 to + 25 dBZ (very light to light rain) the snow will be moderate, and for reflectivities of > +25 dBZ (light rain or heavier), the snow fall rates will often be heavy. This is a general 'rule of thumb' based on my experience but can vary greatly. Les ************************ Leslie R. I had phone calls and SMS messages coming out of my ears. This was quite funny in the CAFE - I tell you got to answer the phone quick smart!!! Thanks to all who did this. In terms of mobile coverage, I would suggest people know that Oberon has coverage for the Telstra network and you also have coverage on top of Shooters Hill out of the car though in most cases. It was quite funny hearing Matt Smith sayiing "Hello.. hello... Jimmy you're breaking up...Hello...Jiimmmy...you're breaking up..." Talking about Shooters Hill, I wonder if anyone could tell me what the actual altitudes of this region are. According to some sources we had, the heights were 1354m for Shooters Hill. According to a sign there, the altitudes was 1250m but this was placed near the couple of houses township on a sign called "Shooters Hill". If this is the case, then Shooters Hill itself could well be 1300m+. But if the sign was meant for Shooters Hill, then so be it - my sources were wrong. One thing I didn't mention in my brief report yesterday was the fact we travelled through the front on the way there - winds turned from NW to W (generally) and there was the increased in the wind speed. The temperature did drop as well as we all know. It would have been good to take a thermometer with is but we forgot. So we should all make this a general rule (if some haven't already) to take a thermometer and take the odd reading as you rise. If you happen to be equipped with a altimeter, great stuff. Perhaps mark the readings as you go up and then note the observations of the snow - eg settling on the ground or whether it was sleet or snow, whether there was sun previous to the snow shower which obviously has a significant effect. Here I go again and I probably will forget again next time. During the early evening yesterday, you could see larger cumulus clouds to the far W. I would have suspected that these would have brought a few more showers (some heavy) of snow to the region around Oberon. Enough from me. Hi all,

At 9.00 am Sunday it is quite windy - we have rapidly moving
shallow cu coming in from the west and a temperature of around
2-3 fluctuating rapidly in the wind gusts and sun/shade.

From these rapidly moving clouds we are getting the occasional
snowflake. Not enough to really register as significant
precipitation and not enough to cover the ground (too
warm in any case).

The hills from the NW to the S are very white (in the very rare
clearance of cloud that allows them to be seen).

Unfortunately, I had to spend most of yesterday indoors
without windows - but did manage a nice moderate
snow shower on Red Hill (for those that know it
around 2pm).

I am quite interested in the possibilities from this blob
of cloud that is currently moving over eastern Vic/
sthn NSW. It seems to have that nice comma
shape that Laurier was alluding to. The front
that is depicted on the BOM analysis looks
great!!

Hopefully, it will arrive over here whilst temps are
still farily cool.

A great start to Winter 2000!!

Patrick

Hi all, Nice little chase to Oberon Sunday morning. Light snow cover through Good Forest and Lowther and then some decent light snow cover in the township and light snow falling. Shooters Hill saw us encounter a nice little blast and there was 1 to 3cm on the ground there. We then drove to Mount Trickett (1362m) and encountered horizontal (barely pea size) snow there in strong winds. There was 1 to 3cm on the ground there too and up to 15cm in some drifts. The most fascinating thing though was the absolute dryness of the snow in the very low moisture conditions, it was like talcum power. Took some good photos, hope to get them scanned soon. Mount Trickett (take the Jenolan Caves Road to the caves from Oberon is one way to get there) is a great place to experience snow like we did today (see seperate post) as you drive directly over it (there's a radio mast on the side of the road) at 1362 metres. And yes, there were some heavier falls that well and truly settled in the areas of Shooters Hill and Mount Trickett. Laurier knows more than me about the area though, we may have even passed him on the way home, was that you on your bike Laurier? At 12.30pm the temp at my place is 2.8 - I saw it rise to 3.4 earlier.

We have a mix of rain and snow falling - with snow becoming
increasingly predominant and heavier. It looks like the main cloud
band is starting to arrive. Sky is much darker now.

Hopefully the trend will continue. If it does, travellers to the Snowy Mtns
may be fitting chains at Queanbeyan tomorrow morning!! (Actually, if
chains are required at Queanbeyan, then they would need to be fitted
somewhere well north of Goulburn I suspect.

Am off to Corin Forest to do some tobagganing.....

Not to impressed with the BoM's handling of snow events, and this one is no different. I realise snow is not reliable in Australia, so the only sort of analysis they do is around the snowy river. However, this event has been on the cards for a good week now, so I don't see why they haven't turned the heaters on so we can get accurate, up-to-date precipitation readings. You would think that, if the snow totally fills the rain guage, that further snowfalls will not be recorded, hence undermining that AWS site. Why don't they have the heaters activate as soon as the temp guages are reading a low figure? Besides, I think the fact that Australia has more *area* of land covered in snow during winter than Sweeden (i think, or one of those scandinavian countries) that snow is not insignificant to the driest continent on Earth. Even the > heaviest snow fall does not impede visibility like a rain/hail storm - hence > I assumed the radar would 'see' less. This is a very interesting statement. Snowfall intensity is typically gauged by the amount of visibility *reduction* caused by the snow! For example, snowfall here in the US that permits surface visibilities of greater than or equal to ~ 3/4 of a mile is noted as "light snow". When visibility drops to ~1/2 mile in snow, the snow is moderate and will often amount to a snowfall rate of 1" (2.5 cm) per hour. When visibility is less than about 3/8 of a mile the snow is said to be heavy and snowfall rates are often > ~ 1 1/2 " (3.7 cm) per hour. We sometimes have "thundersnow" which can result in visibilities of 0 and snowfall rates up to 4" (10 cm) per hour or even more!! I have personally seen this and it is an awesome experience for snow lovers like me!! One difficulty in estimating snowfall intensity by visibility is that almost always when snow fall is still light (~ 1/4" to 1/2" per hour) fog is present. So sometimes it is not clear how much the fog is responsible and how much the snowfall is responsible for limiting the surface visibility. Measurements of accumulated snow is also difficult, especially if there has been any wind which scourers and drifts snow. Normally, efforts are made to limit the wind around an area where they will attempt to average snow measurements taken from several different locations. Finally, some rainfall sensors will be heated so as to melt the snow and obtain a liquid equivalent of the snow. Then a liquid to snow accumulation ratio will be attempted. Here it is often said that, on average, 0.1 " of liquid will result in 1" of snow. But, that ratio can vary widely. Les ************************ Leslie R. Hills were covered in snow (not totally but it looked great!) we then went through oberon where snow was still falling and continued to Shooters Hill where we got some great snow falls, drifts up to 15-20cm in places, but mostly 2-3cm covering the ground. We stopped off at a state forest just before shooters hill and went for a walk... very surreal./eery feeling, pine trees full of snow, no wind, snow falling and the ground COVERED in POWDER snow.. which James tells me is a real treat to a snow lover. Headed back home at around 12.30 as I had to start work at 4pm. A great day ! And we come home to see it is snowing there AGAIN and snowing in canberra! what an outbreak! About an hour ago it clouded over and started raining at 5pm. After a 'mini' chase up to faulconbridge i recieved some very fine hail and some 'slain' (sleety rain). But what took my attention was the very dark bases and structure of showers to the south of me (looks like wollongong). They had an extremely mean look to them, and was developing quickly from my SE all the way out to the west. Might be a intersting night for the Illawarra and Sydney.

Also the Great Western Highway has been cut between Lithgow and Bathurst. Bathurst police advised that further roads are likey to be cut over night.

About 40 minutes ago, rain began falling again at Blaxland. ON the way up to Springwood for another drive it began to sleet, coming in on the wind from the WSW. Then approaching Springwood I thought it was hailing, however it was snow!!
North Springwood had a nice coverage on the ground. Although it came in flurries, it was nice very nice. It seemed that it was only falling heavier out on the ridges further away from highway. Being dark it was very hard to see how thick the coverage was however the car had a nice covering.

Channel 7 news showed some footage of snow at Springwood earlier in the after as well as it closing in on the streets of Leura.

So, when it was snowing moderately here at Blackheath around 4.15pm I checked Sydney radar, and it showed the whole area from the Blue Mountains westwards covered by dark blue. As we had 2.3mm (melted) between 14.45 and 17.00, that's probably a pretty accurate representation of the rainfall rate. My temp -0.2 but -0.9 at Mt Boyce. Snow began falling at my place in Blackheath (about 1.5km NE of the town) at 14.45, increasing to moderate by 15.15. It stayed moderate through to around 16.30, and I had 2.3mm melted snow in the gauge at 17.00. Accumulation began around 16.00, and there's now 5cm on my level "measuring board". Light snow showers continued between 16.30 and 18.00, since when we've had more moderate snow. As Daniel commented, the cloud around 4pm was very heavy -- although over an hour before sunset, it had the feel that the sun had already set. Still fully overcast now, and wind has dropped to around 25km/h and comes in bursts with complete calms in between. The snow is still wet, so that the snowflakes are very large in the heavier falls and are sticking to everything. There's been virtually no snowmelt, except on paths and roadways, so even a modest precipitation total overnight could see some good depths by dawn. The 6pm obs show that Bowral had sleet then snow from 16.30 (6pm temp 0.9). Also the AWS's at Orange, Bathurst, Goulburn, Canberra, Cooma and Bombala all cold enough for precip to be snow. At 6pm the temperature has climbed up to 2.1 - it was 0.6 at my place in Higgins around 4.30pm after the snow had stopped and the wind was calm. It is now quite windy again.

We had about 3 hours of moderate and at times heavy snow fall in Canberra today from around 1pm to about 4pm. In Canberra suburbs snow settled to a depth of about 4-8cm - although much of what fell melted on the warm ground. There are at 6pm still large areas of snow lying around the suburbs. It will be interesting to see how much remains tomorrow - the temperature will need to drop a few degrees to preserve what is left (or we will need a top up). Both are possible. But it is also possible that the wind and slightly warmer air following the cold pool will keep the temp up around 2 - 4 degrees and melt what is left by morning.

Snow settled in greater depths of around 10cm at slightly higher altitude than Canberra - I would say at around the 700m level. I had a nice ski around Mt Stromlo (which was very busy with toboggans, snowmen building etc). Also a group of 15 kangaroos foraging in the snow made an interesting image.

I noticed that the radar around Wagga during the period the cold pool passed over appeared to have stationary concentric rings of yellow (inner), light blue (middle) and dark blue (outer).  The radar beam only seemed to penetrate about 100km from Wagga before fading (even though the satellite image showed that the cloud area was moving east, was more extensive than the radar image and was not a neat circular shape). As the temp at Wagga during this period was between 5 and 3, I presume the effect was caused by snow just above Wagga's altitude - wished I had saved the images.

And the polar jet is the jet near Tasmania. The polar jet is not very strong, because the isothermal (and thus pressure) gradient isn't very strong near it. But the isothermal gradient between the "tropical" air and the cooler temperate/now mixed in with polar air is very great, and hence the very strong jet. 160kn in fact at 250mb for Brisbane! Normally the polar jet remains further south, but has been known to occassionally "join" the sub-tropical jet. Only the servo is open (and just about to close when the run of locals stocking up finishes). The Great Western Highway has been closed and only the occasional local is driving at 20/30km/h around the deserted streets, getting home (or getting supplies). With the absence of traffic, the highway is now fully covered in snow and becoming slippery in spots. Fog is reducing visibility to about 500m -- good, because it means there's now good moisture around, therefore more snow. The snow is deep enough to create a smooth, white cover over everything, and is 6 to 8cm deep on parked cars. There's continuous light snow or ice crystals, shimmering in the streetlights, and every few minutes a short period of large flakes. The wind has dropped off remarkably -- only 5 to 10 knots at most, occasionally getting up to 15, so I'm suspicious that something's going on. Why this calm after two days of 25 to 40 knot westerlies? I drove cautiously to Mt Boyce. There's at least a 5cm snow cover there, giving the lie to the AWS rainfall total of 0.0 -- obviously doesn't have a rain gauge heater! It was fantastic to see the first snow flakes falling about 40ks short of oberon (by the end we were sick of the stuff!), stopped at a park in oberon and watched as the sleety type snow beacme more and more substantial,, started totally covering the ground and was almost a blizzard. Kids (and adults) out everywhere building snowmen and having snowball fights (i copped a good one to the back of the head). Built a real lifesize Jimmy D snowman (yes, not much snow needed i know). Prob left it too late to head home. Just out of oberon the roads were totally covered in snow. at 5kmh still managed a few slides around the road as did many others,, one idiot flew past and later was spotted in a ditch. Prbably lucky to make it back tonight, so a good lesson learnt for the future. They were closing bells line of road as we were coming back at around 630pm, and the great western highway is also shut at a few places.. BBrrrr,, so cold,, need a fever.. :) j/k.. Well, when I got home I got a call from Lindsay hence the e-mail and then the adrenalin hit!!! Decision was made for a quick chase. I thought Mt Tomah is 1 hour away, we have enough light and I grabbed my things. I didn't even think of posting to the list and hey I didn't think of taking the thermometer!!! My sister and I were off. Over the Kurrajong Heights (hills), I could see the dark clouds over the mtns and also the snow line. Just on the rise to Mt Tomah, first flakes began falling. And yes at the Botanic Gardens which I would say is not as high as Mt Tomah itself, it began to snow moderately. So I turned in and it began to heavier. Well I tell you the flakes were bigger and really dumped. Within 45 minutes, the whole area was white!!! More snow in that time than was observed yesterday at Shooters Hill. Excellent stuff. With the light beginning to fade, I decided that it was time to head down. The police 4WD vehicle was patrolling the area perhaps to check out the road. I have some good footage of the snow falling to add to the stuff that had already been taken by others. Well that is two days in a row - never done that before. And guys, about the Jimmy the snowman business, for goodness sake build one and take a photo of it!!! Try a little trick photography with a metre rule somewhere in between!!! I decided not to be left out in the snow chasing stakes and grabbed the video and camera and headed west. At Shellharbour and to the base of Macquarie Pass it was 13.5C, give or take a few points. At Robertson with brilliant sunshine it was 6C, a bit worried at this stage, but I could see complete overcast and precip' way to the west. At Marulan the first rain started to fall, temperature started falling, but even by Goulburn it was still 3C, there were some flurries just east of Goulburn, but mostly rain. Here I nearly made a grave mistake. To the SW it was very dark and obvious that either sleet or snow was falling. I debated whether to head further down the Hume Hwy, or take the Taralga road north as this climbs higher. I took the Taralga road, the sky started getting lighter and the sun again became visible, it started snowing about 20km north of Goulburn, temperature was around 2C. I decided that I had filled objective number 1 and that is see snow falling, but nothing was settling. I was really attracted by the darkness to the SW so I turned around and headed back to Goulburn. About 20km west of Goulburn and at last there was snow on the ground and flakes falling which were larger than back near Taralga. Temperature here was 1.1C Happy and getting late I headed home. A welcome surprise was some isolated flakes near Moss Vale, whose temp' had dropped to 2C. Back at Robertson and it was clear again, but at 1.7C any cloud overnight may produce the white stuff. Hi Everyone,

Here are a selection of digital camera pics which I took of the snow near Oberon today.

I must say I thoroughly enjoyed the snow as it was some of the best I have ever seen. The best bit was walking through the pine forest with James Harris and Matt Smith. It was like we were in another world with everything covered in a thick mantle of white and the only sound being that of the snow squeaking as you trod in it and the rustle of the branches with the wind.

By the way when I got back home today at around 2pm there was a blackout as soon as I walked in the door. The winds were very strong at that time (around 60kph on my anemometer) and must of brought down a tree somewhere onto the powerlines. All up the power was off for 2hrs.
