I would and am *extremely* doubtful of these reports. I have seen severe thunderstorms and even mesocyclones with surface temperatures or + 2 to + 5 degrees C but the instability is elevated above the cold stable layer. These layers are so cold and so stable that tornadoes don't have a chance to penetrate to the surface. Additionally, that cold air is extremely deleterious to the parent updrafts. Moreover, the cold air contains little in the way of latent heat. Adelaide radar doesn't show any circulation, but has heavy showers moving ENE to the south of the city. The satpix seem to be moving the circulation ENE, which is consistent with the low/mid atmosphere flow, and that would take it into an area of high instability --LAPS has a tots value >55 in the area, while the 12z CIMSS upper divergence image has strong divergence centred on Mildura. This would take the low across southern NSW in the general direction of Sydney. It'll take a few hours to confirm what's happening, but if this does develop, it could be the trigger needed to slingshot the cold air field now to its west farther north, and develop the uplift needed to give heavy snow in its vicinity. It's late and this mightn't be the most rational of analyses, but I had to tell someone! I think the cold airfield is being held back by developments near Adelaide (see separate post) -- certainly winds across NSW and Vic are still (at 3am Saturday) basically NW to NNW, and temps are rising (!) -- Cobar was 10.6, Ivanhoe 9.5 and Hay 7.9 at 3am. I think that is what the Doswell/Hanstrum paper is centred on. The primary tornadogenesis mode over the US Plains is associated with high buoyancy (or CAPE) and high shear. There aren't many reports of tornadoes on low (< 500 J/kg) CAPE environments that I am aware of. California is a different story. They rarely enjoy 500+ CAPEs, but do get shear-associated tornadoes just like SA and WA do. There is some similarity in the believed tornadogenesis mechanism between SA/WA and CA. Chuck Doswell and John Monteverdi are the guys who are pulling that cart from the US end. That was the year I graduated from Oklahoma University and I was home very little, just for visits, after that. Because both my parents are now dead, I have no idea what happened to the book. I definitely want to see that. The library will probably be the place to look. But even by that time, 1970, I had been working at NSSL (the severe storms lab) for two years and don't remember that as being a topic of conversation there. At any rate, as I mentioned in my later post, there is a way that could happen without actually occurring in a continental winter air mass. As I said earlier, that is all but impossible considering our current knowledge of tornadoes and tornadic storms. BTW, you mentioned Utah (there was yet another tornado southwest of Salt Lake City yesterday). I wonder if the photo might have been made at the Great Salt Lake. There are large areas where there is not water, only white "ground", salt that is, as far as the eye can see. (I lived in Utah near the Salt Lake for a few years and remember what it looked like.) So, it might appear like the tornado was occurring on a snow field. Les ************************ Leslie R. If a conference paper, I probably have it. Yes, I know of low CAPE and high shear situations. In fact, in the seminar I teach on radar and convective storms I stress that supercells can form with CAPE of less than 500. With high shear, the way the shear augments the updraft in those situations it becomes more important in to the vertical motion strength and extent than does CAPE. I believe it was Kemp or Kemp and Ratuno that discuss the theory about this and their results using numerical modeling. In fact, of course, it has been the numerical models that have revealed to us much of the physics of convection. But visual, radar, satellite, and environmental observational data is equally important in learning about storm structure, life cycle, and dynamics. Here we have high cape (3000 to 4500), good shear (50 + knots 0 - 6 km), a flash flood watch, and tornado watch. Should be an interesting evening. Les ************************ Leslie R. I love wx like that! Here we call this either "sleet" or Ice Pellets (IP). As rain falls through a layer where the air temp is below freezing and the layer is deep enough the rain freezes and becomes sleet. Here, the IP must be greater than about 1/4 inch to be hail and must occur with thunder (I believe). What separates these two forms of precip in Australia? How large must the IP be to become hail or how small must hail be to become IP? Les ************************ Leslie R. We have had these type of hailstones here in Sydney during cold pools of air and the air is unstable so thunder is heard occasionally. I recall in September 1995, there was a cold pool coming through from the S and this also gave very tiny hail pellets briefly in several areas across Sydney. I don't think there was thunder heard but I am not sure if there was lightning observed although it is most likely to have come from cumulinmbus http://australiasevereweather.com/photography/photos/1995/0905jd03.jpg http://australiasevereweather.com/photography/photos/1995/0905mb01.jpg http://australiasevereweather.com/photography/photos/1995/0905mb02.jpg Sydney got light snow and sleet way back in late July 1986 after a very cold severe winter. This was preceded by unusually warm summery weather (26C or so) although that day it reached 16C or so very quickly and then cold air set in during the afternoon. This was a Friday and then Sunday we got a temperature range out this way -5 or -6 to 10C. Of course the 1986 Sydney floods followed a few days later yet again - 250+mm in 24 hours!!!! Having been watching this discussion....time to get my .01$A in! > > Why do we hear so little about coldies from the US? Perhaps in wintertime there aren't any... Cold air tornadoes are generally spawned by single cell thunderstorms or active cold fronts. They do not need high CAPE, shear or low LI to produce them and they do not have to be of great vertical extent. These are the non - supercell tornadoes that were being discussed earlier on in the week in this forum and are generally caused by updraughts beginning to spin and tighten up. They are generally short lived events (up to 10 minutes or so) but can become prolonged on anafronts or occlusions that become thundery. Severities are T1-3 / F0, occasionaly higher, F3 / T7 has been reported. If any of you saw "Storm Force" in Oz last week, the tornado in Spain tearing up a vineyard was a non - supercellular event (single cell) whilst the two events in the UK (the Fraserburgh WS - April, the Isle of Wight TN - January) were both spawned on/by cold fronts. AFAIK there is one country that has the right mix for coldies with warm moist air from the Atlantic, deep cold unstable air from the North Pole, elevated areas of cold dry air from Siberia and hot dry air from North Africa, there have been up to 50 TN events reported in ONE DAY in the UK when these airmasses mix it (in wintertime), having said that WA and Victoria seems to get the right mix - is this correct, Ira / Jane ??? While I was too young to remember snow in Bendigo in 1977, I do have vivid memories of the June 23??, 1981 outbreak that had similar snowfalls as described below in the 1977 event. What were the actual max temps during the 1977 & 1981 outbreaks? Also, how similar is this weekend shaping up to what occurred in June 1993 (ie. Snow on the ground from Anakie to Daylesford)? Snow! Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi all A mixed morning in SA. The coldest air has headed north and apparently there has been a fair dump in the Peterborough, Ororoo, Yongala, Hallett area. This is our most snow prone area, with several towns about 600masl. I've heard one report of cars siding off the road on the Barrier highway near Hallett, the same report mentioned 1" on the ground and 4" on Mt Bryan [933m] which should be quite a sight. Unfortunately it's a 200km+ chase over icy roads. Not today. As for myself, Adelaide's weather, althought it's been cold, just hasn't had the 'oomph' I originally expected. Nevertheless, I did drive up to the Barossa ranges this morning. I plonked myself on Tower Hill in the Wirra Wirra Peaks [~640masl] and waited. Unfortuately the cold Cbs went south and then north of my position!! But two cool things did occur: 1] On the ridge I was on there was excellent scud action on the windward slope. At one stage a vortex [steam/cloud devil?] formed in one of these scuds that was at least 100m high! Unfortunately it only lasted 20 seconds and it was disappating as I bought my camera to bear. 2] Finally a beautiful sunlit hail/snow precipitation curtain formed in front of me, I took several photos, and was finally rewarded with a few minutes of ice pellets, followed buy a few minutes of snow, followed by more ice pellets. Nothing settled, but the scene was beautiful and wild. All in all - I must remind myself it's still only May. And I found a great new weather outlook. To all in the east, have fun, and watch out for that black ice! - there's already been a 10 car pileup in the Adelaide hills.... 6.6degs in Adelaide at 11.05am Phil 'Paisley' Bagust paisley at cobweb.com.au http://www.chariot.net.au/~paisley2 +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 May 2000 11:39:42 +1000 From: Ross Wilson X-Mailer: Mozilla 4.61 [en] (Win98; I) X-Accept-Language: en To: Aussie Weather Subject: aus-wx: Aus-wx: Orange. My rule of thumb which always seems to work well is it has to be around 10-11C here ( and showers around ) for snow at Robertson at 700m. I will probably go for a drive when my wife gets home at 3pm , but the winds are wrong for Robertson, I think Monday morning may surprise us for the southern highlands. Oh No!  Now the football commentator have started doing it!

Was listening to the ABC football broadcast just now - they are broadcasting from up in Penrith and Wilco the football caller said something about the strong winds 'its a willy willy or a mini tornado or something but its really blowing up here in the mountains'

Just can't escape it can you?

Here in Kilsyth it only reached 8.6c. Tomorrow the BOM are foecasting a top temp of 10c again. Went for a drive to Marysville today, it is about 50 minutes drive from here at an elevation of 430 metres. It was sleeting when I arrived there about 1pm. I headed up the road towards Lake Mountain(1400 metres), 3km out of Marysville (about 600 metre level) I noticed snow at the side of the road, I continued on for a few more kms and got to about the 800 metre level. It was snowing heavily and there would have been 5 to 10cms on the ground, the trees were heavily covered and sagging under the weight of the snow, it was very pretty indeed especially with heavy snow continuing to fall. I stopped the car and took several photo's and decided not to proceed any further up the mountain due to the icy roads and no chains with me. Pretty good day and tomorrow sounds just as good with more snow tonight and tomorrow. We had snow just after 12 noon in Oberon and I would say more on Shooters Hill. We then headed there around 2pm and as we rose in elevation more snow showers developed. At elevation approx 1150- 1200m, the snow settled on the ground. This made some surprisingly good footage using the video camera. It was quite cold and when in the wind, the wind chill made it fairly unbearable for us to stay out of the car for too long. Sydney siders Jimmy and Geoff are simply not used to such conditions although Geoff has seen much more than this. The last major heavier snow shower occurred around the 4pm mark and lasted about 15 minutes. It was the same band of snow showers that greeted the infamous Matts crew. I must say we enjoyed it. A little more moisture and it would have been much better as the air was certainly cold enough. Damn Antony, we didn't build a snow man!! And by the way, the ASWA sweater did well!!!! My maximum temperature recorded at Golden Square was 7.0 at 14:00. Given the similarities of these two readings it is probably fairly representative of the overall area, and in this case breaks the May 31, 1977 maximum (at the time registered on the lawn in front of the jail) by 0.5 deg. This would certainly be a record for the digitised era, which unfortunately dates only from 1957. It was reported at the time of the 1977 cold outbreak that the maximum temperature (7.5 deg) was the lowest May max. for about 80 years. It's 0.6 and overcast so hopefully a bit of moisture's crept in and will hang around for the night. I will drive to Crookwell tomorrow - I expect they have some deep drifts on the surrounding hills (peaks at 1050m) given the conditions... Andrew. Not an uncommon occurrence up here. However, there are thick clouds blowing across periodically, and it's also not uncommon to have a good dump from one of these during the early hours of the morning. Looking at the 9pm obs, this seems to be the situation across much of Vic and NSW above around 500m, and in Vic there are lots of AWS reports of 1 to 3mm in the past 6 hours with temps hovering around the 1 or 2 degree mark, so there must be a good dusting of snow on higher ground somewhere. Looking at the IR and water vapour satpix, there are still some nice blobs of humidity streaming across the Victorian coast in a strong SW stream, some of which may retain their integrity for long enough to give the odd minor dump somewhere inland. No sign, unfortunately, of those nice little CVA comma-shaped clouds that signal a tight little cold pool that will bring a major snowstorm as it passes through. Main hope for the NSW tablelands, though, is for the stream to shift south of SW and get a little onshore component while the lower atmosphere temps remain below 2 degrees. The latest GASP (00z) keeps most of NSW at a sub-536 thickness with 850hPa temps of 0 to minus 4 through until Thursday morning, with winds gradually shifting to SSW as a surface low forms in the Tasman east of Tassie on Monday and moves slowly north (!) over the next few days. The model has rain of 40mm+ for the 24 hrs to 9am Wed and Thurs on the S coast of NSW, which could be interesting for the Snowy Mountains with a thickness in the area between 532 and 536. Both the latest MRF and the earlier EC are broadly similar to this scenario out to Tuesday, but the MRF weakens off the NSW cold pool from Tuesday onwards, and develops the low farther east. Even if we don't get the satisfaction of snow over the next few days, this is still a remarkable event for May, with extraordinarily low temps over three states. And when the wind drops and the skies clear, there will be some very frosty mornings for a few days.
