Last years "Thunder down under" chase people, take a look at this :)

http://www.abc.net.au/news/weather/weath-21apr2000-5.htm
Thargo has a flood warning out for it... but the funniest line is :
"but most Easter holiday-makers have been forced to change plans."

Who would want to go there for a holiday LOL..
Ok thats enough teasing the Thargomindian's.

I've been at it again, tonight's effort is Clyve Herbert's "Dogs of the
Day" - and if you're curious enough to find out what this is all about,
you'll go to
http://www.rubix.net.au/~cadence/dog_of_a_day.htm.

Tomorrow's effort should be a report on last Sunday's storm chase by
Andrew & me & some more pics of the 14th April chase.

Have a safe and enjoyable Easter all, and I echo Anthony's sentiment -
may the Easter bunny leave you supercells!!

Stay tuned,

Saturday 8am

My screen temp went down to 2.5 this morning.

Only light frost on roofs at 6am, though. A light to moderate breeze
mixed up the air over night.

I'd be interested to know what the Richmond area got down to, as they
may not have had as much breeze as us.

hi Michael,
yes, lots of recollection!!I was working in Inverloch right near the beach
and I didn't see it!I was on the lookout for something different that day
and i had a great vantage point(building house on cliff top)and i do
remember the intensity of some of the coldies coming in,freezing, howling
winds with hail.(great to work outside!!battle the elements!)i saw some nice
mammatus that day and thought that was great until word came through about a
waterspout coming ashore into Wonthaggi!there were other spouts that day too
apparently and it's the usual story, everyone seemed to see one but me.one
fella that worked with me at the wasn't working that day claimed he saw 2
together 'dancing' about out off part of the coast!!but i wouldn't know
whether to validate that.especially at the time having never seen one.My
house mate saw the end of the one that came through Wonthaggi(he also saw
the one this week,so we talked about the 98 one)and he described how the
debris were been flung along the path and in front of the "spout" iron from
roofs and fences flying about like cards.i came in to Wonthaggi after work
to have a look and there were several homes damaged, lots of
fences, branches, tree damage.it was on the TV news that night with the usual
type of report. Also on June 10 1993 a severe microburst hit Wonthaggi
causing millions of $ damage!almost flattening some structures like a brick
wing of the secondary school.I also missed this one and only saw the
aftermarth as i lived in Inverloch.i have a copy of a video analysys of this
event that i got from the town library, not too bad.

Wonthaggi - apparently it is aboriginal for 'wind and rain'

here are some photos from the same day that the waterspout made landfall
into Wonthaggi.these are taken from near Inverloch(11km down the coast)and
are of the cell that I think spawned the spout they are after the cell has
passed.due to the topography of the coast i would not have been able to see
the spout anyway.

LATER......

T.Middleton.

Not such a cold night in the Sydney basin. Mins in western Sydney were
generally in the range 10 to 13 degrees. Strong winds kept things stirred
up.

Saturday 12:55pm

G'day Mark

Gorgeous day here, we've been sunbaking out in the backyard. Sun very
intense.

My screen temp was 9.5 degrees today at 12:50pm.

Might see a decent frost tomorrow if the winds lighten.

Look's as if that cold moist air just missed us, looking at the Sat pic
earlier this morning with that speckled cloud in the Tasman, just east
of here.

Surprisingly enough, I actually know someome going there this week for a
holiday. One of my staff members has family there and I've been giving her
crap about the place for the last 2 weeks :-) She's taken it with a good
heart though and promises to bring me back a bottle of that lovely reticulated
bore water for me. :-p

Cheers,
Rosco.

Superb mammatus Tony. I have often wondered about Wonthaggi's location in
regard to to SW winds. I mean in regard to any cold air systems that build
along the Otway coast, but run slightly offshore and parallel to that coast
( IE they head E/NE ). They would ground about Wonthaggi.

Michael

Hi all,

Just came across an interesting website, Blueskyfrog.com
http://www3.smsmebaby.com/login/default.asp and they have a couple of
services that may be of interest to you all, esp when chasing (as long
as you're in phone coverage). I haven't had a good look thru it all yet,
but the email to sms message on your mobile might come in handy for
chasers wanting radar info etc. Cheaper than a whole phone conversation
which can drag on an on. :-)

I've had a quick look for other free internet to sms message sites, but
the few I found all suck. :-(

Cheers,
Rosco.

With regards to SMS messages using the internet, I have found it to be
dreadfully unreliable - there is not much use to have a service where no
messages get through for days and then 7 messages arrive one after the
other (especially with no date or time stamping).

For a while now Vodaphone, Telstra & Optus have run SMS messaging within
their own systems (with date and time stamping) at between 15c & 20c per
message of up to 160 characters. Although this service bears a cost to
the sender, its benefits are as follows:-

it's faster to use & you can do it while driving (even if you shouldn't)
the messaging is instant - like seconds!!!
you get to type more information
you don't have to be in front of a computer

I've tested all of the 3 carriers and messages will now go across them
from one to another ie: Vodaphone to Optus, Optus to Vodaphone & Optus
to Telstra & Telstra to Optus.

My recommendation (having used both SMS by computer as mobile phone for
more that 6 months as well) - use your mobile phone if you can - at
least you know that the message gets through!!!!

Hi every1,

Well...goshamighty! We're still debating global warming and "cause and
effect"!
Far be it for me to say "whither warmth" or "whither cold" but a few "facts"
from the last hundred thousand years speak volumes...

Millions of years ago (in fact...probably hundreds of thousands of years) it
was warm. CO2 levels were higher than now (ice-cores...distribution of
plants etc..) Then the Earth entered a number of "ice-ages", due apparently
to the vagaries of the Earth's spin/orbit/wobbly bits of planar mathematics.

Carl Sagan and Richard Feynman were nearly alone in saying that "because A
and B occur together there is no reason to say A causes B! " This is not to
say that "global warming etc.." is not occurring...just that on the
time-scales that WE look at they are probably quite insignificant in the
great scheme of things...

Let the debate continue...but let it continue without the more visceral
feeling...i.e. something more solid than 200 years out of a really long
time...

Geez...I'd be more worried about over-fishing or slash-and-burning
forests...

Cheers,
Kevin from Wycheproof.
