Hi Jimmy, everyone..

Yep they are definitely great pictures - i took almost a full roll of
pictures on that day, but my shots were no-where near as good because i
don't have a zoom on my camera :(

This shot taken on November 7 interests me though

http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/damien/07-11-99d.htm

I have showed it to a couple of people and got mixed reactions - some
say wall cloud other say it's not.. identifying wall clouds is
definitely not my strong point..

Anyway - opinions?

I see little doubt that this is a wall cloud. It looks like there is a
backdrop of heavy rain and probably frequent lightning and maybe nearly
continuous thunder. My guess is that this is located directly beneath a CB
tower. I would further guess that at this time winds were light at the
location of the photograph.

Hi Ben,Jimmy & Everyone, Unfortunately the lowering in the photo was not a
wall cloud but a turbulent region along the gust front. Interestingly
though, as the gust front propogated to the S.E it triggered off another
nice cell about 10NM south of where this photo was taken (looking north near
Wivanho dam). The new cell can be seen developing at 0720UTC on the event
loop for Nov7 BSCH site. Thanks, Damien..

Sounds interesting although:-

"In order to provide a favourable atmosphere for discussion, it is proposed
to restrict participation in the Workshop to not more than
about 40 persons. Thus attendance is by invitation only and would be
restricted to those likely to contribute to discussions.."

Having participated in analogous workshops in molecular biology I can tell
you there is no chance of 'outsiders' getting into these.

Ummm, the fact that both providers (Telstra and Optus) impose
ANY limitation at all given their "No Limit**" promotion where
"**" refers to an arbitrary Acceptable Use Policy smells of
something that could go through the "misleading advertising"
aspect of Australian Trade Practices Legislation like a dose
of epsom salts. If I was in an influential position in either
company to warn them to tighten up their advertising to make
it more explicit and not vague and potentially misleading,
that is the proper process to follow. It would be very
unfortunate if both or any provider was to be tested in the
court system under consumer protection interpretation since
that would stagnate deployment of these broadband services
that ultimately benefit both the providers and customers.
Telstra and Optus need to clarify what "acceptable use" and
"excessive use" actually means.

Hi Everyone,

This particular photo reminds me very much of one of Kevins at:

http://www.fortunecity.com/greenfield/manchester/4/fractus.jpg

I had thought that perhaps it was this photo to which the wallcloud
reference was made:

Hey There Gang

The Australian Severe Weather
Site http://www.australiansevereweather.simplenet.com was mentioned on
the Children's TV quiz show DOWNLOAD today.

A SA member in #weather said he heard it, and so a Perth Member confirmed
it when Download was screened there a while later. Apparently they have to
mention at least one website a day.

Gee nothing like national TV coverage :-)

Hi

Gee I feel honoured by that. Can you tell me what they said about it Andrew
perhaps in a private e-mail??

Thanks for the information. I must admit I haven't watched the show...

Hi every1,

Interesting grab from the latest USAToday missive...

"Flying into storms invites disaster

A new study shows that many pilots are ignoring airline regulations and
flying into thunderstorms they should avoid. For nine days in the spring and
summer of 1997, researchers with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's
Lincoln Laboratory combined weather-radar data with the flight tracks of
incoming aircraft. Their results seem to fly in the face of airline rules
and Federal Aviation Administration-sanctioned training that instructs
pilots to avoid severe weather, especially at low altitudes. Within 15 miles
of the airport, 90% of planes encountering the most severe weather in the
study flew into the storms, 266 of 297 times. "It's an invitation to
disaster," says a former head of the National Transportation Safety Board."

Just fuels my already paranoid approach to flying...:))

Kevin.

You could treat this as a reminder but really this message is an invitation
for those interested to go to dinner tomorrow night before the meeting in
North Sydney. I was asked by Matthew Pearce to e-mail this request through
to others.

Now we don't know where but we will meet outside Thursday 30th March 2000
at 7:30pm (19:30) at Weather 21 Studios at 7, West Street, North Sydney, on
Level 2, 6:45pm at the latest.

Remember the meeting begins at 7:30pm. Will meet you there.

Hi John,

I believe this is certainly a Wall Cloud, and a rather nice one (IMO).

Also, is what I believe to be a possible mesocyclone - this is captured
from video footage, the URL is:

Although some people certainly have differing opinions on this
particular capture!
