Hi John, everyone..

My dads farm (SW of Gympie) got 2 1/2 inches of rain from a storm this
afternoon..

45mm of rain in 3 hours or so here tonight as well.. i went for a drive
up to Maleny this evening - quite a stormy night up there with a flash
of lightning every 10 seconds or so and steady moderate rain..

Hi Ants

Mmmm, half ya luck.

You know that you are not really having a storm when you can count the
lightnings on one hand, in my case, 4, all CC's, for the 7:30pm jobby
including 4 rumbles - all to the North. Sigh... But still, this is the
first activity actually recorded at this location since Jan 7, albeit
distant i.e., > 3 kms, and was enough to get the entire SDS affected family
out on the front porch in anticipation of more (sadly dissapointed however).
Last local activity at this location was Oct 4 last year. (We had a ripper
guster on Nov 7 of course, but even then, only distant T & L).

BUT!!! I just heard, as I type this, another distant rumble at 11:00pm, so
maybe hope yet. Not much rain so far, maybe a couple of mm's. Lightning
tracker is showing some activity well to the North.

John.
>snip

Hi all!

Received 31.4mm of rain here in ten minutes from a thunderstorm!
Produced one CG, and several CC's - large amount of thunder, but was
drowned out from the torrential rain! Gutters overflowed, and the
backyard flooded nicely :-)))

Wow, I don't believe it! SOMETHING AT LAST!!!!!

I reported it to the forecasters at the BoM and got told "They're not
really storms as such, just lots of moisture and instability." The
temperature has sat around 26C for most of the afternoon, and DP's
around 23-24, and CAPE around 2500. But I don't know, I'd classify a
CG, numerous CC's and thunder, and 31.4mm in 10mins/168mm/hr rain rate
as a 'thunderstorm.' :-)

I also gently suggested that a cell near Crows Nest should be watched,
but was informed it was nothing special. It's been in maximum intensity
for thirty minutes now, and is moving differently/more structured than
other cells.

Hello me again :)

Photos and a report are up of the storm chase Myself, James Harris,
Jimmy, Mario and Geoff chased in Lithgow last Sunday. The photos aren't
my best, but considering we were often under dark clouds with no sun,
they turned out ok.

I thought I do something different and took my mother and son
into the squall line around nightfall. It was a ``gentleman's chase''
totalling about 110 km.

The highlights: one blown transformer giving us that characteristic blue
long-lasting blob of light, strong outflow, small (pea or less) hail,
lightning with peak rates of 30+ flashes per minute, probably
from a HP supercell embedded in the squall line near Chickasha (OK)
around 6:45 pm (LT), and those sheets of water flying away from
your car (the car ahead of me was testing the water depth for me,
thank you :)).

Son reacted to the absence of more severe weather by falling asleep,
mother reacted to the heavy rain by issuing requests to pull over.
We had Gary England (a local TV/radio broadcaster) showering us
in "tornado warnings" (probably derived from the broadcasting station's
very own Doppler radar) on the radio to enhance the ambience.

Cheers, Hazza

Ira,
I believe 2 people died in the Sandon tornado (1973??) when their car
was thrown off the road.

Cheers,

Pete.

I find it interesting that one person gets to choose
what photo's go up for voting. Seems a little unfair
to me? Maybe I'm just having a bitch but that's how I
see it. What's the point of asking for heaps of
entries if only a few are selected by one person?
Hardly seems worth the effort!!

Hi Andrew,

Actually - the entire ASWA committee chooses a selection of these
photos, which is then put up onto the public area for all members to
vote.

Well, after having lived in Switzerland for the last 6 years, I went back
home to Perth this summer and now I'm in Madison, Wisconsin (just west of
the Great Lakes). I came here after a nice hot Perth summer expecting to
freeze my ... off, but the weather here has been a little unexpected.

Normally, it's very cold and everything is frozen well into March and often
into April. So, since we have been here 3 weeks, it was cold (-20C to -5C)
and sunny the first week. Then it snowed about a total of 40-50cm the next
week, with temps around -10C to +2C. That was a week ago, and the lakes
were all frozen, with people sitting in little shacks on the ice fishing!
Then about a week ago, it got warm. For about a week now we've had temps
above +15C, and the last few days it's been +25C!! That's an all time
record for here in March. Now it's about 23C, humid and we've got big fat
storm clouds moving through and there's a tornado watch current!! Tomorrow
night they're predicting driving sleet and snow and temps of about 0C to +2C!!

I know it's off topic, being in the USA, but as a W. Aussie interested in
the weather wherever it happens, I am so surprised by the weather here I
had to post to the list.

Hope my house is still standing when I get home (and not buried in snow
tomorrow)!

I guess you people in Brisbane are somewhat relieved of SDS... However,
nothing at all has happened in Hobart. As it happens, I was looking at US
radar and warnings.

It's Wisconsin, Illinois and Ohio today. Check out

Funny thing is, to an inexperienced stormwatcher like me, it doesn't
**look** any worse here than many storms I've seen back in and around Perth.

Off the top of my head for NSW:
In recent years, nothing in the violent category reported since the Ellsmore
tornadoes in 1989 (Northern tablelands near Armidale) - I think one was
rated an F4.

The ca. 1992 Merimbula/Pambula (south coast) tornado(s) was pretty decent -
reported as an F3 and I think this still stands.

Australia has been extremely lucky with regard to tornado fatalities. The
latter example cited above is a case in point as it went right through the
town - not sure how close it got to any of the caravan parks but I imagine
an F3 would leave a hell of a mess at one of those. Actually, I'm still
amazed that no-one has been seriously injured or killed by giant hail from
any of the monster HP supercells affecting the populated east coast during
the last decade.

Some very very very very big storms are developing in the blue mountains, SE of Sydney. After 25 minutes of constantly taking photos and getting very excited i came to the conclusion that someone is in for some very big storms. I would't be suprised if there go severe. The towers are shooting up in 5 minutes and their seems to be a lot of moisture around. It has gone to green on radar, ande line takes up my entire NW to SE horizon line. More to follow....

It was officially rated an F2 killing a couple when their car was lifted and rolled 100m into a ditch. Another 2 people were injured by flying debris. The same tornado caused $300,000 in damages demolishing trees and houses in the area. >From the same parent storm, a couple witnessed a second funnel cloud in Maldon (20km North of Sandon). On the subject of the largest rating tornado in Australia's history, I would have to say that it was either the Bucca tornado or the Buladelah (70km North-Northeast of Newcastle) tornado of 1 January, 1970. This tornado (argumentatively the largest tornado ever recorded in Australian Meteorological Literature) "shredded" a swathe 22 km long and for the most part between 1 and 1.6 km wide through the Buladelah State Forest either totally destroying or debranching over one million marketable trees. Eyewitness accounts of the incident state that the devastation was "incredible". Officially, the tornado was categorized as an F4, although it did not pass through a built up populated area. However, the destruction left behind from this phenomena both to human and natural structures was significant enough to estimate that the tornado very well could have been at least an F5 rating. The tornado managed to lift a tractor weighing approximately 2,000 kg and carry it at least 100 m and dump it upside down. A caravan was also fully demolished leaving it unrecognisable to the human eye. Although I have not yet been able to read up on the Bucca tornado, I will have to personally state that the Buladelah tornado of 1 January, 1970 was the most violent, significant and largest rating tornado in Australian Meteorological history. I sincerely hope this helps. Good luck! We had driving rain and strong winds up until about 12.30pm (I estimated gusts up to about 25 knots - lots of small branches on the roads, temp around 15 and rainfall of around 16mm from 6am - a nice preview of autumn). As the low moved further south the skies cleared from the NW and the SE winds have almost completely abated. I noticed some congestus developing in the clear air to the NNE - although tending to dissipate rather than going on to become storms. The view to the west is totally clear with just 1 or 2 fair weather cu. It was nice to get some interesting wx for a change - I was concerned, when I saw stars shining from a clear sky at 10pm last night, that once again another system was about to completely pass us by. Hopefully there is still some more interesting wx to be had over the next couple of days. The prevailing winds are taking these storms directly SE so any immediate storm possibilty for Sydney is unlikely, but with the high cloud moving in from the north, maybe this will bring some activity. Hopefully world renowned cumuls chaser Michael "where have all the storms gone" Thompson has some action. ; )

The next few days for Sydney (and surrounds) look  promising. The BOM are going for a 'moderate risk' of thunderstorms tommorrow, and i have it on good authority, [---from a couple of professors =) ---], that Saturday looks very good, due to favourable winds, an upper cool pool, and a partridge in a pear tree.

There is a major area of red occurring on the radar 6:00Z .

Well this was the message I was going to send until I rushed across the road to video it and also photograph. There was a persistent lowering which I believe to be a wall cloud. It was directly under the main updraught that seem to slightly coil to the main tower of the storm. It was most probably a supercell but at the time of the lowering  was probably in the collapse stage. The lowering lasted about 25 minutes or so and is on video and also on several (half a film of photos). Well I will see what other people think at the meeting.

An interesting afternoon.

My immediate thoughts were storms. I left home at 2pm with lots a junk Cu to the west. I headed for Picton from where I could make out a weak storm NW of Picton. I was not really frilled by this one, so myself , Deborah ( wife ) and the baby had a nice cup of tea at a cafe, I could not see the sky from the cafe, and on emerging 30 mins later saw a small anvil directly SW. I drove to the Razorback lookout, from here I had the choice of a storm to the NW which looked OK, but to the SW over the southern highlands was a line of fast moving storms in various stages of growth. New towers kept going up on the back edge. I immediately headed down the freeway to Pheasants Nest, one of the few places on this view deprived road where you can get a half decent look. From here the SW was very dark, but not solidly so, there were breaks in the line indicating several cells. I proceeded to Mittagong, whilst headed there a severe storm warning came over the radio. This storm was already east of the freeway and heading quickly for Kangaroo Valley/Nowra. I decided to stay put and focused my interests on a storm west of Mittagong. A small downburst occurred about 5km west of Mittagong, it was like Storm King Dam 1998 all over again, low scud from the cold outflow was being drawn up into a new developing storm to the north. I watched for about 10 mins and took pics and videos. I thought I may be able to squeeze another 10 mins, but big cold drops and small hail started. I sat the hail out in the car for about 10 mins, it was only about 1cm, but baby Claire just loved the sound of it on the roof. This storm all to quickly moved SE and I returned home. At home and no storms, just a decaying anvil over Kiama. Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi Michael and everyone Thanks for the comments, I'm trying to include as much data as I can into my reports, so interested people who read the reports can get a good feel for what the day was like. It also helps me keep a 1/2 decent archive. (I just get home after a chase and save a few frames of AVN data for around 6Z.. not really too much work, but im glad people like what im doing) I almost missed today totally model wise... sunshine and clearing rain down your way raised my hopes, but when Matt Pearce told me there were -3 LI's over us, I was.. "wow!" I agree that tomorrow may be good as well.. Last i looked saturday was looking like the best day.. but that might have changed by now, see what happens anyway. I'll charge the video now too.. thanks for the reminder. Also thinking of getting a simplenet site.. that unlimited space is very attractive.
