There was a single rumble on the 4th January, but no rain in the Wollongong
CBD itself. Around Shellharbour there was 5 rumbles and a couple of mm on
the same day.
I can't recall a storm drought like this, some winters have been more
active.

I think I saw this same gust front here at Clayton, about 20km southeast
of the city. It was about 8pm or so, and from my window I saw it to the
northwest. I rushed outside and took a few shots, but as it passed
overhead it seemed to lose its form. Only a minor breeze kicked up as it
passed, so it's ooomph had obviously been lost. I got a few shots, but
with the dim lighting, I'm not sure how it'll turn out.

I think that the Illawarra - Sydney may be setting up for a round of piggy
in the middle this weekend.
Today should see some storms on the south coast south of Batemans Bay, and
the adjacent ranges / tablelands.
Unfortunately the next SE change appears that it may creep through the
Illawarra overnight, leaving a poor chance for storms on Sunday. On Sunday
the action ( action is probably too strong a word ) should have moved to the
Hunter and westwards.
This is a classic case scenario that has been repeated so many times, storms
south of you one day, north of you the next.
The only chance is that when the weak trough moves through overnight it may
kick off some convection, but the odds are against you.
One consolation is that the upper winds are pretty crook, so any storms that
do develop other parts of NSW should be weak, and we can tell ourselves that
they were not worth chasing.
Today I would rather be in NE Tasmania, now there is a indicator of how bad
things are here.

Cheer up Michael. Think about the folk in Calama, slightly in;land from
Arica, in Northern Chile. They had a thunderstormon 10 February 1972 -
which brough the first rain to the region for an estimated 400 years,
going on the surface deposits of the sodium nitrate. They had 0.2 mm
again in 1989 but otherwise nothing since althuogh thin strata- Cu is
quite common.
There's always someone worse off than you.

It's been a pretty nice couple of days in Victoria after a pretty
uninteresting summer compared to the last one. I've got a roll and a
half of film to be developed
Rainfall totals from slow moving storms have been in the 20-40mm /
24hour region. Castlemaine - 32mm, Coldstream - 26mm, Kilmore - 24mm,
Laverton - 22mm, Maryborough - 40mm, Moorabbin - 26mm, Baywater - 21mm.
Lightning was also seen for the first time in a while east of Mt
Dandenong - but I have still to hear thunder since 27th December.
Chasing has been difficult with these - the best ones have been lurking
in the non-chaseable territory to the NE of Melbourne - but yesterday
changed that.
I'd shot out of the office at 1130 up the local hill to take a couple of
pics and then spent the rest of the afternoon being intensely,
screamingly frustrated because I could see the development outside and I
was stuck with a computer training course for the sales reps...and btw,
who's the idiot who made up the "all sales reps will be in the office on
Friday between 3 & 5pm" rule??????? - oh, yeah - that was me, so I
couldn't really break my own rule....mind you the noises in my head were
pretty loud by the time I escaped at 5pm (I just hope no-one else could
hear them or I would have been committed ). I did get onto the roof
during a break in the training to take a couple of pics.
Sat on the 'south eastern carpark' (that's a freeway for those of you
who don't know) videoing & taking pics of these amazing TCu's almost
overhead - crisp & white & boiling - something we just haven't seen for
a while - and an hour later escaped out to the SE of Melbourne and the
Latrobe Valley. Drove out to Warragul, videoed what looked like a very,
very, very short gustnado (do not get excited), some nice cloud
formations, a kangaroo who couldn't see me or a tripod or a purple
Commodore parked off the side of the road & almost ran over the top of
me while I was videoing a cloud , lightning on the way back......it
was just a nice storm chasers' evening drive.......
Today I think I catch up on those little things that don't get done
while chasing .....like get the pictorial reports for the 23rd & 25th up
on the MSC site.......

SDS can't get that bad - all you have to keep in mind is the newest item
at the top of the Melbourne Storm Chasers humour page - this little item
put's everything firmly back into perspective - print it out and put it
on the fridge for those days when there's only Cumulus humilus or
stratocumulus (not worthy of capitalisation!!)for thousands of
miles.....

After all the action of the last couple of days, here in Geelong we
continue to be deprived. Although the northern suburbs copped a bit (Corio
22 mm) and surrounding parts to our NW and the Bellarine Peninsula (eg,
Portarlington 30 mm),most of the urban area only received a couple of mm,
making our progressive monthly total around 15 mm (average 39). Our Otways
water catchments didn't do much better so our water restrictions remain (18
months now and counting). The drought continues! Meanwhile we're heading
for a Feb maximum temperature record: the old record was 28.9, we will
probably end up around 29.5. Regards to all.

Issued by the Bureau of Meteorology, Brisbane
For 1100 am EST on Saturday the 26th of February 2000
A cyclone watch has been declared for coastal and island communities
between
Cooktown and Cardwell.
At 11am a tropical low with central pressure 1000 hPa was centred near
latitude
16.5 south longitude 149.0 east, which is 370 kilometres east of Port
Douglas.
The low is expected to move slowly westwards during the next 24 hours
and may
affect coastal and island communities between Cooktown and Cardwell by
Sunday
afternoon.
Residents between Cooktown and Cardwell should take preliminary
precautions and
consider what action they will need to take if the threat increases. If
you are
unsure of what actions to take, information is available from your
local SES.
The next Advice will be issued at 5pm EST.

Thunderies in Blackheath = 1/10
Not that it really matters as I still haven't got my camera back from
the Sydney repair shop and my new car has the "check Engine" light
coming on, so there goes my reconossance (sp?) mission for this years
snow chasing to Oberon next Monday. Looks like I'll be sitting around
Penrith on my day off. There are some disadvantages to living in the
mountains, everything is so far away! Except for the snow :-)
True Don there are always people worse off, but often there are plenty
better off too.
My glass is "half empty" today :-(

Yayyyyyyyyyy!!! Our first 'almost' cyclone for the year...and about time too!!
I recorded 240mm overnight last night....fantastic..Cairns was flooded locally
this morning, in areas where we haven't seen water in 12 years up here..SES
were sandbagging in front of businesses,etc. water has subsided everywhere now
but more heavy rain is expected overnight tonight and into
tomorrow...depending on the low....clear at the moment but very humid...and
gusty wind every now and then....the gas bottles are filled and we're
excited!!

PS: We are so well drained up here that even with that volume of rain
overnight, we mowed the lawn this afternoon...ya can hear the grass growing..I
kid you not!!!!

These are tornadic events that have come to my attention. And I have listed
them here on my website for this online archive for everyone. (a few of you
have probably stumbled across it before)
Recently added 2 photos of a Tornado sighted on 3/10/99 near Boorowa
(Southern NSW) at approx 2.25 pm by Peter Macdonald. Also below is the
approximate path of the Tornado, hich was on the ground from between 5 to
10 minutes.
IF you know of ANY MORE PLEAS PLEAS PLEASE PLEASE email me with some
details about it, so i can include it in this archive.
I know there are hundreds, probably thousands more accounts out there, its
just a matter of finding out about them.
If any people at the BoM could give me a helping hand it would be very
much appreciated. (I am not doing SA/WA as Andrew and Ira are covering these)

Tornadoes occur more commonly in NSW than most people would expect. The
Bureau of Meteorology's database records 351 tornadoes across NSW from 1795
to December 1998.
Recent examples of tornadoes in NSW include:
27th July 1998 - Willow Tree (North West Slopes) - F2 tornado damages a
house, moves a vehicle
1st July 1998 - Fingal Bay (Hunter) - F1 tornado damages a caravan park
29th September 1996 - separate tornadoes (likely F1-F2) at Elong Elong,
Gilgandra (Central West Slopes) and Bundella (North West Slopes). Large
trees uprooted & snapped. 4-tonne truck moved
30th November 1995 - Rosewood (South West Slopes) - tornado (likely F1-F2)
un-roofs homes, uproots trees and flattens crops. Tractor turned
upside-down. Accompanied by 4.2 cm hail
16th April 1995 - Merimbula / Pambula (South Coast) - F2 tornado completely
destroys
12 houses and damages nearly 100 others. Forty people injured. Damage
estimated at over $10 Million
28th January 1995 - Cobar (Upper Western) - tornado accompanied by 7.5 cm
hail
20th November 1993 - Tucabia (Northern Rivers) - F2 tornado destroys 8
homes, damages at least 100 others. Two people injured

Bundaberg, Queensland, levelling three homes and unroofing many others, as
well as ruining millions of dollars worth of crops.

During the early hours of the morning, a tornado severely damages over a
dozen houses, destroying several in the north west Tasmanian town of
Smithton. It is the State's most intense tornado, with estimated winds of
280 km/h which also flatten hundreds of large trees along a 15 km path.

A tornado and hail cause a total estimated $75 million worth of damage in
Adelaide, the worst natural disaster since Ash Wednesday bushfires of 1983.

6 April 1960
In the early hours of the morning, a tornado sweeps through dense Jarrah
forest near Collie in the south west of Western Australia, cutting a swathe
averaging 240 metres wide along a continuous track of 30 kilometres. Tens of
thousands of trees are left felled in its wake.

Although there was a possibility this system had lightning in it, I didn't
leave until about 2pm.
On the way there, there were some nice updrafts and a couple of towers, but
as I got closer the heads started to go fibrous. When I had reached a good
spot, there was a nice rain foot next to a RFB, looked quite spectacular
considering we havent seen some really good weather for a couple of months.
I have video and Photographs of the event. I decided to enter the lions den
and proceed into the rain, this was really cool, windscreen wipers going
full bore and still couldn't see out of window. Most of the farmlands in
the area were starting to flood with water visable on the fields. There was
also a small river running next to the road. Unfortunately no lightning was
seen but all up it was a pretty nice cell. I think I may have got there a
bit late to see the lightning :(
I will have a report up on page shortly.

The tornado was at Bucca, near Bundaberg (QLD), another tornado (F3)
occurred at Maryborough. Five confirmed supercells occurred during that
day (29th of Nov, 1992). Hail was reported up to 7-8cm in diameter.
