About 215km south of Halls Ck, WA, Ira. I think it's a mining
settlement. The coded obs were 94320 11575 82904 10295 20230 3////
40007 71922 87860 = indicating 5/8 CuSc low cloud and Ac middle level
giving 8/8 total, with a 4kt WNW wind -- not quite tornado weather.

I believe dust devils will almost certainly have their highest velocities
at ground level or very nearly so. (If my memory serves me correctly,
dust devil studies have found that to be the case.) So called "landspout
tornadoes" do have the same. Doppler radar observations have revealed much
about tornado strength variations with height and occasional development
aloft. They (dust devils) definitely grow from the ground upward and
nearly always will have the maximum rotation rates right down on the deck.
The source of the spin is at ground level. The vortex lines end at the
surface, and the lowest pressure will occur at the surface. That pressure
deficit is what drives the vortex, its source, and sustains or augments its
rotation rate. All are indications of highest rotational speeds at the
ground. Remember as well, that the source for the updraft itself is not
aloft and does not involve increasing upward motion aloft with the release
of latent heat. The updraft is driven by the extremely hot surface
temperatures produced when the sun is heats the surface directly and the
earths surface is dry. Finally, the supercell tornadoes has the
mesocyclone, analogous to the extratropical cyclone with a "divided
structure" or rear down drafts and forward updrafts, to owe its origin to.
In these vortical structures, the Rear Flank Downdraft plays a very
important role. The tornadoes finds itself developing in the strong
vertical velocity gradient between RFD and the updraft just ahead of the
gust front. There is no "divided mesocyclone" nor RFD present for the dust
devil.

Also a word on "skipping tornadoes". In reality, tornadoes do not "skip".
They weaken and re-intensify. When they weaken, the condensation funnel
will appear to "lift" because of the lifting condensation level is aloft
(lower pressures aloft simply because of the decrease in mass density
aloft). This gives the impression that the tornado is "lifting". Again,
the vortex lines must end at the surface. So, it is the weakening and
re-intensification of the vortex that causes the weakening or cessation of
damage and then the re-intensification of the vortex. Further, at times,
owing to the decrease is surface friction aloft, the tornadic winds may be
slightly stronger aloft. Having said that, in supercellular tornadoes we
do find initially, higher rotation rates aloft which lower to the surface
as the tornadic circulation develops near the surface and matures

Les.

Hi all - and Damien!

While at the ASWA meeting, Damien Howes displayed his excellent photos
to everyone. He kindly leant me his photos to scan to put them up in
the internet. This are the first ~100 photos - there are around ~250
photos to eventually be scanned, but it took me four hours to scan the
first 100, so it might be a while before I get them all scanned! :)

Ben has also spent a lot of time uploading them onto BSCH - hopefully
the rest will be scanned/uplooaded soon. The tornado photos are also
present in this lot of photos - simply superb :-)

If anyone has any comments - please CC them to Damien (email address in
this email), so that he can also enjoy the comments - thanks :-)

Hi everyone,

Yep they are great pictures - i can't wait to get the rest of them up..

We also have just recently got permission to put the Bucca F4 Tornado
(strongest nader ever photographed in Australia apparently) pictures up
at BSCH - in a new section going up in the next week or so,
appropriately called "tornadoes" :P These pictures are simply awesome -
i think everyone on the list will enjoy them..

I just wanted to take this opportunity to thank Anthony Cornelius for
all the scanning he does for BSCH - he has scanned every single one of
my pictures, and he's always more than happy to scan anyone else's
pictures that are sent to him - thanks Anthony!!!!!!!

Total rain at my place from last nights activity - 113mm.

This was received in a period of 6.45pm - around 11pm last night.

Looks like it will be the same today - sunny with the
storms/showers sweeping in on the seabreeze as the trough
intensifies.

Paul in darwin.

Notes from the Victorian ASWA meeting
12th February 2000
at The Pancake Parlour, Doncaster

Present:
Rod Aikman, Kevin Garde, Luke Garde, Jonty Hall, Clyve Herbert, Andrew
McDonald, Claire McDonald, Dane Newman, Adam North, Jane ONeill, Blair
Trewin, Paul Yole, guest Andrew.

Apologies:
Debbie Parker, Hugh Roberton, David Kilpatrick, Les Crossan & Leslie Lemon
for obvious reasons, Nandina Morris, Leslie Baxter, David Jones, Michael,
Jennifer & Arden, Nick Sykes.....and those who didn't quite make it.

Meeting opened with breakfast & lots of absolutely brilliant summer photos,
books & calendars doing the rounds.

Discussion re ordering tshirts, polo shirts & windcheaters - payment & email
or snail order from Victorians & international members due to me by February
29......cheques to be made out to ASWA Inc. and sent to me at
PO Box 94, Abbotsford Victoria 3067
......see also

We got to use our investment today (an overhead projector - many thanks to
Clyve for organising this on ASWA's behalf) - and many thanks to the Pancake
Parlour who turned off half of their lights to accomodate us this morning
and then turned a blind eye to the fact that we were sticking things all
over their walls.

Andrew McDonald discussed the funnel on November 22 in Queensland during
ThunderDownUnder'99.
Clyve Herbert discussed the Merriwa funnel of December 4th on the TDU'99
chase, and the background and set up of the Paraparap tornado which was
videoed on January 9th SW of Geelong (25 OHT's will give you an idea of the
amount of info going into the report, which should be up on the web in the
next couple of weeks)..

A full report is currently being compiled for the BoM regarding the latter
event.

A video night is being arranged in the off season to combat SDS (probably
during the peak of the Melbourne stratocumulus chase season during May) -
there will be video of the November 22, December 4, January 9 events & also
some video taken by one of our new members of May 3 in Oklahoma.

Confirmed speakers and guest for 2000 so far:
Lindsay Smail (Geelong Weather Service)
Nigel Tapper (lecturer & co-author of "The Weather & Climate of Australia &
New Zealand").

Next meeting will be held on Saturday 18th March, 9am Pancake Parlour in
Doncaster.
