Hi Ben.

Yes good. I have a distance picture of one of the storms you chased, but it
is at the beginning of a new roll, so it won't get developed for a while
(unless something spectacular happens over the weekend (wishing)).

Hi All,

Well despite my initial misgivings, today ended up being a carbon copy of
yesterday at Mt. Crosby, except 1 deg warmer. Max 40.0C, temp at 6:00pm
38.0C., and once again a beautiful summer night under a clear sky and full
moon and 27.0C at midnight. Obviously no sea breeze...

Final note on Ch 2 7:00pm news: a mention that a T/storm warning was in
effect for the Wide Bay & Burnett, and a curious comment that the Bruce Hwy
was just again opened and all fallen trees had been cleared.

Anyone know anything about that?

John.

Thank you for this response. Yes, it was just that lack of facial
expression, body language, and tone of voice that got me into trouble with
my own brother. In fact, that is part of that Internet culture I referred
to when the communication is entirely the written word lacking sight and
sound. The cyber landscape is strewn about with potential verbal 'land
mines' that we all stumble into from time to time. It would be well for
all of us to give the benefit of the doubt and conclude misunderstanding on
our part until and unless attempts at clarification prove our first
impression to be founded. Even then, we might do well to simply let it go
and chalk it up to 'cyber space' friendship pitfalls.

Lastly, I would like to share something I learned from professional
scientific writing. When your ideas and the written expression thereof
undergo criticism, critique, and editing, one has a tendency to take it
personally and assume a defensive position. That is because we tend to
identify with what we do and write and such criticism seems to be a
personal attack on ourselves. It hurts. Almost nothing could be more
damaging to the writer, should he or she take on that defensive stance. It
is very difficult to learn and benefit from criticism when we attempt to do
so from that posture. I had to learn to properly accept it. Each time
when I carefully evaluated what had been said about both the content and
the way it was expressed and then accommodated those criticisms, I
benefited greatly. The work benefited immensely, and was much better for
it. This does not mean that we should 'take to heart' all that is said,
but that we should take up what seems to be correct and good and leave
behind what we disagree with. In fact, I had one anonymous reviewer of a
paper I had submitted for formal publication, tell me in his critique that
I had 'taken all the life out of the language and had made it very
difficult to read.' Rather than rewrite it, I gave up and did not attempt
to publish it again until a year later. Then when I went back to it and
rewrote it, it was much improved and was published. But even though it
hurt greatly to see the truth in the reviewers words, the work was far
better when his criticism was accommodated.

Just some thoughts on the subject. Again, thank you.

These storms are what we call "Pulse" storms. Don Burgess and myself
assigned this name because they seem to be one large buoyant bubble of
convection that goes up, develops precipitation and hail within the
updraft, which becomes water loaded, and is replaced by downdraft, and
descending precipitation. Upon arrival at the surface, the reflectivity
core may be associated with a brief episode of large hail and a microburst,
followed by dissipation of the same as well as the storm itself.. The
updraft is a pulse and not in the form of a sustained continually rising
current. Low level winds and convergence are too light and too little
respectively to replenish and maintain the updraft. Thus, severe weather
at the surface, if any, is composed of one episode lasting perhaps, 10 to
15 minutes.

"Severe Pulse" or single cell storms in this kind of environment grow,
glaciate, have a short spell of severe weather and then collapse as the
downdraught isn't sheared out of the way, cutting off the updraught which also
isn't sheared out of the way. They can be pretty nasty though whilst theyre
active, there's a coupla good examples on Jane ONeills webpage, linked below.

Hey there everyone

Ok, here goes again, this is my second atempt to write this after
getting cut of by a really close lightning strike.

Its been an interesting night here in Perth. I got home from work at
about 1:00am and had seen a few flashes in the distance. I got on the
net and had a look at the radar to see a few patches of yellow heading
in my general direction. After talking on IRC and watching outside, I
eventually headed to bed at 2:30 only to be woken 10 minutes later by a
really loud crack of thunder. I opened the curtains and lay there
watching it for the next couple of hours. I remember 3 distinct strikes
all within 1km which set off numerous car alarms in my street. I
eventually fell asleep just after 4:15am only to be woken again at 7:00
by my brother rushing in to my room telling me to have a look at the
sky, needless to say it was pitch black to my WSW and W. I got on the
net and checked the radar to see a large area of yello just of the coast
from my place. Just as I started to type this email the first time,
there was a really bright flash outside and about 1/2 a second later a
really loud crack of thunder and the power went out. I sat outside
watching the storm for the next 30 mins and then got back on the net to
check up on things again. Still more cells developing to my north and
there is plenty of thunder as I type this.

Regards

Greg

Hey all,
As you have all probably heard, the Bureau staff at VRO on the
26th floor and myself witnessed two funnel clouds descending from rain
free Cu (as described by Peter Corlett). The intial funnel actually
appeared to make contact with the surface just outside of St. Kilda in
Port Phillip Bay. Upon later study of this event, Tony Bannaster (Severe
Wx) and myself concluded that the funnel did not make contact with
the ground and hence, will not be recorded as an official event.
Evidence of this can be seen with the funnel itself. I don't know if Les
has any images of the funnel from the Melbourne Webcam, but the cloud
base was approximately 2,000 feet above Sea Level and the main visible
funnel appeared to descend about a quarter of that (500 feet). No
reports nor visible confirmation were recorded by 17:30, thus the funnel
was not a true Waterspout. Bugger! This funnel appeared at approximately
11:40 and lasted for about 3 to 4 minutes on the 21 January, 2000.
The second funnel observed was significantly smaller and only
lasted about one and a half minutes. As mentioned earlier by Peter
Corlett, there was a lot of scuddy cloud present and this made positive
identification difficult. The cylindrical shape that the funnel
inhibited was convincing enough to label this as a funnel.
Overall, this was a bit of excitement for a pretty miserable day
(weather wise that is). As can be expected, nobody had a camera (damn)
and therefore, no photos. I can just hope Les pulled some pictures from
the webcam so that we have evidence.

I got the prong that can definately be made out, don't know about the funnel ):

I certainly got an interesting lowering..... it may just be scud, though - I believe it was over the business district but my geographical knowledge of
the area is somewhat suspect

Radar was showing a lot of single cells in lines for most of the morning there this kind of event would have me racing after them ideal FC / TN weather in
the UK (:

                    overnight

Thunderstorms and heavy rain across the southern half
of Western Australia have flooded houses, cut roads,
disrupted power supplies and stopped some of Perth's
                    suburban trains.

The State Emergency Services (SES) has received
about 100 calls in Perth from householders affected by
                    flooding.

On the roads, dozens of cars have stalled in deep
                    water across roads and intersections.

Passenger trains have been cancelled for the time
being on the Fremantle and Midland lines because of
flooding at East Perth and sand washed across the line
                    at Subiaco.

The storms have disrupted signals on the northern
                    suburbs line, delaying services.

Westrail has been trying to arrange bus services but a
spokesperson says this will take some time.

Power has been disrupted in a number of Perth
suburbs and at Moora and Northam.

Just to update this, the 24 hours to 9am this morning, the Perth City site
recorded 104mm of rain, this smashes the record of 52mm, and is also the
2nd highest 24 hour rainfall for any month, the highest being 120.6mm on
the 9th February, 1992.

Considering Perth only averages about 9mm in January, thats pretty amazing
rainfaill. There has been constant thunder and lightning since around 1am,
and there's heavy rain falling as I write this.

FORECAST FOR THE PERTH METROPOLITAN AREA

A Severe Thunderstorm Advice is current for the Perth Metropolitan area.
Occasional showers and thunderstorms, easing during tomorrow. Some local
flooding due to heavy rain. Fresh to strong E'ly winds with strong squalls

Just a reminder that the ABC TV's This Violent Planet series is featuring storms tonight at 7.30pm.

There should be some good shots of tornadoes, cyclones, mid-latitude storms etc.

Just the tonic for those of us who haven't seen a storm for a couple of months (mid-late this coming week may offer something for SE Aust?)

Some nice cloud effects over Canberra with the jet stream overhead this morning. Cirrus of all kinds (cirrostratus, cirrocumulus and just plain cirrus) moved rapidly across the sky constantly changing shape as they did. Just a pity the lower atmosphere wasn't a little more like Brisbane's.

July 1965. A 'wave cyclone' formed on a front crossing Western Australia and moved northeast into western NSW. Then east and onto NZ. It helped ease severe drought conditions across huge areas of southeastern Australia and brought bitterly cold weather and heavy snowfalls as far north as the Queensland border, or almost so. 2.July 1964. Severe westerly gales all the way from Perth to Sydney and east towards NZ due to the polar front moving further north and/or being more intense than usual. Heavy snowfalls in southeastern highland parts of Australia. I don't know of any tropical disturbances that had as widespread an influence as these. Good program anyway, to bad it was the last episode :(

I ended up chasing north of Brisbane today - and i actually had quite a good day! There were some impressive Storms around, and some really nice features.. Just spoke to someone at Energex, and northern SE QLD and eastern Wide Bay Burnett have copped a hiding.. with up to 30 suburbs without power at the time i called (would have been higher this afternoon i guess) - he couldn't give me an exact number of clients without power like they sometimes do, but my guess 50 000 or more? Unfortunately since going over the sat pics, and radar when i arrived home i found out that i was just that little bit too far south - but the amount of petrol i had stopped me from going any further north..i did however get some great snaps, and i will upload all of them tomorrow - in the meantime check these out!! The first storm (first few pictures) had >>>NASTY<<< written all over it.. i wouldn't be surprised at plenty of damage from it - haven't heard of any yet though.. http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/ben/temp/22-01-2000-08.jpg http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/ben/temp/22-01-2000-11.jpg http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/ben/temp/22-01-2000-12.jpg http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/ben/temp/22-01-2000-17.jpg http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/ben/temp/22-01-2000-21.jpg http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/ben/temp/22-01-2000-29.jpg http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/ben/temp/22-01-2000-42.jpg http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/ben/temp/22-01-2000-43.jpg http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/ben/temp/22-01-2000-47.jpg http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/ben/temp/22-01-2000-52.jpg http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/ben/temp/22-01-2000-53.jpg http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/ben/temp/Image61.jpg Susan Puddifer wrote: > > Susan from Balmain > > Watching Tracker - you sure that damned thing isnt broken or something? Crosby. 7:30 am temp 28C, Max 36.0C, but 6:00pm temp 31.5C thanx to Sea Breeze which made it today. RH much higher today though, around 70% instead of 40% at midday, so sweat city. So the last 4 days: 34C, 39C, 40C, 36C. But it is all scheduled to end tomorrow without even a storm! :( John. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------
