Here in Brisbane we are still aiming for that magic figure, even 29 will be welcomed. Any spare heat please send up north before we all freeze.

------------------------------------------------

Melbourne reached 30 for the first time this spring, topping out at 30.4.

This is the latest date only since 1992, although it seems more abnormal than that because each of the last five years has had a
30 in October.

There should now be at least two more days over 30, and possibly three, depending on the timing of Thursday's change. Also looks to be a bit of moisture with the change - lots of potential for the chasers (and, as mentioned in another thread, northern Victoria has
an excellent road network).

The information that I have is that the radar site has been selected and is on a hill just to the east of the town. Clem indicates that it has good views to the east and south - and should provide good coverage on the coast as far south as Merimbula.

One of the additional benefits should be to better follow southerly changes
as they move up the coast - particularly the weaker ones that may not show
up very well a long way from existing radar sites.

Whilst  the radar equipment is currently in Melbourne and ready to go, the
selected site is on land subject to a native title claim (the BOM had
thought it was unencumbered Forestry land).  Expectations are that the
necessary negotiations should be completed and the site operational in time
for next summer.

>>Can you confirm the expected location and type of radar?

As to whether it is the same site as the other Telstra towers and the type of radar (a question I should have anticipated but didn't), I will seek additional info.

This has been strictly after-hours "work". During my work time, I need to spend enough time to complete real work tasks instead but that doesn't stop me from writing and answering E-Mail:-) I've made some promising progress...At present, I've written a little perl program that can extract the central position, extremities, total area, precipitation rate and relative movement (from the previous image) of storm areas within a given radar image. I now need to translate the image coordinates to "real" coordinates. But first, I need to guage the relative worth of such translation. Thus, I ask people on the list and in ASWA to consider the following and comment either to the list or to me directly: These questions relate to the algorithm designed to analyse a broad-scale image to decide whether a narrow-scale image within is worth retrieving for more detailed storm info. 1) Will storm areas found within broad-scale radar images that have an underlying narrow-scale image always have a corresponding storm area within the narrow-scale image? 2) Will there any cases of a major storm found within a narrow -scale image not having some representation in the broad-scale image? 3) Does the BoM publish the latitude/longitude of its radar sites? 4) Do the BoM radar images line up with grid north. If not, what do they line up with? 5) Are the BoM radar images scaled in a linear fashion. In other words can I assume a direct correlation between any two points on any BoM narrow-scale radar image to have the same km/pixel or Nm/pixel scale? The next questions relate to storm analysis algorithm output info; 6) Analysing broad-scale radar produces references for the narrow-scale image(s) needed. This is mandatory IMHO. 7) Storm central position (lat/long), precipitation intensity, (mm/hr) extent (sq km) and relative movement (km/hr). What are the desired units of measure if different from the above suggestions? 8) Would it be more valuable to denote the townships or sites within the storm track? e.g. "150.10E/-33.91S moving 43 degrees (NE) at 32.5km/hr. Katoomba is 26 degrees (NNE) at range 46km." Such an output is a lot of work but potentially of more value to both storm chasers and the timely issue of automatic warnings. 9) If reliable, would it be appropriate to issue an automatic radar analysis report to aussie-weather? Alternatively, I could set up an E-Mail to a given address that is responsible for archiving automatic radar analysis reports. 10) Given that most supercells track somewhat differently to the environmental norm, how can the environmental wind direction and rate be determined from successive radar images? Is this a useful parameter to evaluate automatically? One idea to do this looks at lesser precipitation rate areas and works out their movement. This is an extension to the algorithm that currently finds intense storm centres within an image. 11) Storm hysteresis: How long shall the archive keep radar images if the storm dies away and builds up again? 10,20,30, 40...minutes? Setting up the Image Data Files (IDFs) for this will require considerable detailed geographic analysis. If the BoM radar images turn out to be nice and linear, I can use much of the existing BoM site info to populate the IDFs. The missing info is the BoM radar site latitude and longitude. Once I have this and some geographic points, all the scales can be worked out. One final question is...will the effort give good results? I think it will as my initial tests show considerable promise in finding storms on an image and keeping a log of those storms from image to image. It is also proving a potentially invaluable tool for archiving only worthwhile radar images. Thanks in advance for any feedback. ,-_|\ Michael Scollay /ASWA \ mailto:michael.scollay at telstra.com.au \_,^._/ Treasurer & Weather-info Archiver, ASWA Inc. v http://www.severeweather.asn.au +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ 005 From: Blair Trewin [blair at met.Unimelb.EDU.AU] Subject: aus-wx: Thursday: an interesting day for Victoria To: aussie-weather at world.std.com (Aussie Weather) Date: Tue, 30 Nov 1999 12:00:18 +1100 (EST) X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4 PL23] Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com The Victorian Fire Weather Briefing (a very good source of publicly available forecast discussion info) says it all: 'Thursday will be a very interesting day!' Sob...;( Got out to the Gawler River where I was working today by 7.30. Despite the BoM's prognostication of cloud but no storms, it was obvious by 9.00am that convection was already going off with lovely N-S cloud streets forming. By 11.30 the Cu was getting lumpy and we could see the first precip cascade off to the north. At lunch (1.00) the first thunder was heard. A big cloud was organising. As we stood and watched from the south side of the cloud in the muggy silence some great base/scud structure formed, although there was never any question of rotation. But the best bit came last as we waited for the rain to hit us - across a paddock about a km away a big dust devil whirled up, moving away from the storm at very high speed (at this stage we were standing in dead silence), 60 seconds later the guster hit (could the devil been on the gust front?) and we stood in the cool 20knot winds and watched CG's and precip cascades. On the way home the cloud revealed itself to be a classic 'H-bomb'. Beautiful, but no camera!! To cap it all off when we got back to Adelaide a second cell had formed over town which dumped about 10mm on us in about 20 minutes. All in all a lovely day. Maybe it's not over yet? I just hope Andrew and Kathryn were out and about and yes - I will have my camera ready tomorrow and thursday. Grrrr. I will now head to Braidwood for around 1pm, then proceed from there, I will stop overnight at Bombala, Cooma, Braidwood or Queanbeyan then head to Albury on Thursday, perhaps a little further west as I think the system will only make central NSW at best by Friday. Largish thunderstorms produced heavy rains and hail through an eastern suburb of Adelaide today, localized flash flooding occurred but no reports of injury as yet. Thunderheads are still popping up all over the Adelaide metro area and also further north near Pt-Wakefield, where a fairly large cell is brewing as I type. As I type a large cell is starting to re-build producing what seems to look like an overshooting top but this could just be re-development. The STA still remains for Adelaide area so hopefully we might get some Lightning shots in tonight. This has got to be one of the best days viewing I have seen for quite sometime, huge Anvils all over the place.. Here is some interesting facts of SA weather for yas. In 1889 on the 14th of April, 3 ppl died in a Hailstorm in SA In 1847 on the 19th of July, Adelaide experienced what is called "The Great Adelaide Hailstorm" and in 1855 on the 29th of December, 200 sheep were killed by Lightning on the Coorong. A big pulse cell went red for a while and just sat over the area - in fact the most intense echoes suggest that this cell has propogated from east to west a little. ---------------- TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST SEVERE THUNDERSTORM ADVICE BUREAU OF METEOROLOGY NEW SOUTH WALES REGIONAL OFFICE Issued at 1730 on Tuesday the 30th of November 1999 This advice cancels and replaces the advice issued at 1503 and now affects people in the following weather districts: Southern Tablelands east of Braidwood to Crookwell Illawarra west of Bowral Central Tablelands south of Katoomba and east of Crookwell to Oberon Thunderstorms are forecast within the advice area this afternoon and evening Some of these are expected to be severe, bringing large hailstones, destructive winds and very heavy rainfall. --------------------- >From: "Michael Thompson" >Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com >To: >Subject: aus-wx: Storms Visible SW of Wollongong >Date: Tue, 30 Nov 1999 14:57:40 +1100 > >Can see some storms SW of Wollongong, looking rather weak, but glaciated >and >real storms none the less. Today looked very interesting with cells everywhere - then they all drifted North - north eastwards and died out leaving more organised activity some 300 kms away near Jabiru. The BOM's weekly tropical note is out - the SOI has increased 2 points in 1 week to now at +10. They say that Moderate La Nina conditions are continuing to strengthen.
