Just so that people can plan ahead, it is early days yet but a combined
meeting of ASWA and AMOS Weatherwatch Group will meet on the Wednesday15th
December 1999. This is planned to allow for video footage from the End of
year Chase to be shown and also to allow different people from both groups
to meet. A dinner is planned beforehand for those interested.

When details come to hand, more information will be posted through.

This isn't a free plug, but I can remember reading a review of a product called stormtracker in a ham radio magazine (Radio and Communications) late last year. The manufactuer has a web site at

http://www.boltek.com/

The blurb says it is easy to install and will detect lightning up to 300 miles away.

The reviewer in the magazine stated it was easy to install and is run through a computer, which connects to a small outside aerial. Although it is made in the US of A Stormtracker was reviewed in Australia and worked okay.

The problem is that it costs about $500 U.S (or there abouts)...........Ouch!!!!

The other problem being that it makes the very questionable (read wrong) assumption that all lightning strokes have the same EM/RF intensity. Knowing the typical attenuation, they use that basic original intensity assumption to arrive at a distance to the storm. Very poor. It is advertised as being a "low cost" radar substitute. Hi Lindsay and everyone,

We have some photos taken in Fourth Avenue, North Katoomba during that snow fall in 1986.  It was so deep that our mother couldn't leave the property for two days.  She had sleepers on the drive and it was too steep and slippery to walk down or to even drive down.  There has never been as much snow there since, even though she has snow just about every second year.  This year for the June Long Weekend.

Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi Bill and all, Why I myself is relatively inexperienced with models (only 1.5yrs experience), and is by no means an expert; I thought that I'd share an opinion of mine... That is, last year I noticed that many models (NGP/MRF appeared to be the worse culrpits) formed TC's off the Australian tropical waters quite frequently. Very few of these actually formed, and generally only persisted for 1-2 forecast runs in duration (although sometimes longer). The worse period of this to happen was Nov/Dec last year. My guess is the reason why they do this, is that they're just not equipped to handle TC's. Any thoughts/comments on this? "W.A. (Friday). I saw a very nice storm pass north of me while driving through the southern suburbs to get onto the freeway. It was constantly very dark, and almost had a dark blue tinge to it. I saw the odd flash of lightning, but couldn't watch the storms too much in heavy traffic (that and I had my mum, who is the queen on back-seat drivers!). On the motorway, I had a better view, there was a small, but very defined and smooth flanking line on a cell (of which the radio said hail fell out of). I'd believe them too, while looking in my rear-vision mirror, I my jaw fell to the floor from disbelief on how green the sky was!!! It wasn't a tinge of green, it was just plain green! I saw another cell to my WSW, and hoped in anticipation that we'd be able to intercept it on the way to the farm. Unfortunately, this was not going to be the case, with the cell just going north of us. It did have an nice RFB thoug. No photos unfortunately, mum wanted me to obey the "no stopping on motorway signs" to grab the camera from the back (she's techno-phobic) - despite my reasoning that trying to photograph an excellent updraft forming from an RFB was an emergency! The RFB basically looked like http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/anthony/th_990105c.jpg on the bottom. There was still the odd flash of lightning around though, and as we passed through on the highway, and into the country side on the roads, we ran into some heavy rain, but this was basically only small drops. Although I did get excited when for a brief moment (20-30seconds), large drops were splatting on my wind screen, but to no avail. The result though, was an extremely cold, 16.5C greeting at the farm. We heard some fairly frequent rumbles of thunder though. Once the Sun came out, it quickly warmed up to 25C though (thank God for small mercies!). Today (Saturday), was nowhere as exciting. Although we did have one congestus shower (that I ran into when I ducked down to the nearest town for some ice), and there was a fairly nice Cb out near Beaudesert, but this didn't show up much on radar. Hopefully we'll get some much better storms with this next trough system (and as Murphy would have it, I'm working on Tuesday!!!) -- Anthony Cornelius Queensland Coordinator of the Australian Severe Weather Association (ASWA) (07) 3390 4812 14 Kinsella St Belmont, Brisbane QLD, 4153 Please report severe thunderstorms on our Queensland severe thunderstorm reporting line on (07) 3390 4218 or by going to our homepage at http://www.severeweather.asn.au +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------
