It'll be difficult to find any amount of money on a producer's wage! Thanks for
the offer, and the interest sounds quite reasonable. If only AGC were as
amicable, I wouldn't still be paying off my out-of-date
compu&#*&^$(&*%)% at !#&%&^#( at )#$^$% at )(#^ at $!#$# at *$)$& at ^$($%

ooops... don't think it liked that :-\

Hi all,

I have been planning for some time to spend the coming weekend at Tathra (on
the NSW South Coast near Bega).

After reviewing the latest set of models this could turn out to be a lot
more interesting than I had been anticipating even a couple of days ago.

In particular the Cola MRF 72 hr forecast from the 21 October run had me
nearly falling off my chair. Without internet access on the coast, I think I
will remain prepared to make a rapid retreat to the Tablelands on Sunday
morning.

Judging by the rainfall maps over the last few months, that area of the
coast will certainly benefit from some moderate falls. The potential seems
to go well beyond that.

I may have some interesting reports for early next week.

Patrick

PS Congratulations Michael T - any name decisions yet. (For some reason I
keep having the names Tracy and Althea float around in my mind...I'm sure
any child with those names could turn out to be a real wildchild.

Hey Ben, Anthony,

Did you see the footage on last night's Ch 9 news, showing the overturned
full size container at the airport?
The container wasn't empty but I have no idea what the weight of the
contents was. It is a nice simple object, so given some idea of it's gross
weight & known size, assuming it was side on square to the wind gust, it
would be a simple calculation to estimate the wind strength required to
roll it over.

I wonder if we could find that stuff out?

John,
>snip

Hey Ben from Brisbane here..

I have put up a radar loop of the storm that effected bayside suburbs of
Brisbane late last night/early this morning..

http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/archiveddata/assorted/20-10-99/radar/local
loop.htm

It was red on radar for 1 hour and 40 mins..

The official rainfall figure from the airport is 70mm in 15 minutes!!
That could be some kind of record? That's a 280mm/h rain rate..

Thanks to James Chambers and Ross Portas for saving the radar images
last night..

BTW, this storm developed over the western and southern suburbs of
Redcliffe (where i live).. i got 35mm all up last night, but probably
10-15mm from the storm that effected the airport..

Andrew,

Are you for ever going to live in August in computer world so paint shop pro
works?

You emails now arrive about a 1/3 of the way down my 2895 aussie weather emails
folder that I have to search to mark as read.

By the way can someone share a storm with us as we in Perth have not had one for
a long time and I think that we are all forgetting the whole concept of
lightning.

Hey John, Everyone..

No i didn't see the footage.. very interesting.. hopefully we can find
out a bit more about the container and get an estimate of wind speeds..
this storm is turning out to be even more interesting than i first
thought..

Anthony lives close to the airport, and he went out early on Thursday
morning to survey the damage.. he has written a report on the storm and
i have placed it in the recent events section of BSCH.. check it out:

Ever thought of deleting all read emails every day. Or at least set up a
filter/wizard/rule/tool that pumps all read mail into an archive directory
once a day. I find that both work very well in keeping email sanity.

BTW: I love your web work. Great stuff.

I think the weekend will be interesting ! I just hope it happens as I hyped
up and would be disappointed if it turned into another north coast NSW event
( no offence guys, but you have had your share ).

The baby's name is Clare. Where did you get Althea ? that is a book I am
currently reading - The Liveship Traders.

I think with lifted Index values and the moisture trough line in place, I
think that tomorrow may be interesting inland. I will recheck in the
morning and if so will head out early. Well you know what I am like. If you
would like to tag along, just contact me on (02) 96271943. The target area
is around Gunnedah region and perhaps a little west. The conditions are ok
but the models cannot predict at the local level. We just have to try and
pick the right area as we approach.

If you interested call this evening. I am heading before 8am - no questions
asked. You may have to come along in your vehicle as well if seat is taken.

Channel 7 had some footage of the damage at Deception Bay (a number of trees
and branches down). Looking at the radar I don't think that damage was
caused by the airport cell.

At the airport they showed a mobile site office that had been blown over.
The report said that the contents, scientific instruments were wrecked. This
office was the type you see at building sites and was sitting on a number of
timber bearers not wheels. I don't think it was a regular type shipping
container.

The report added that the event was very localized with one rain gauge at
the airport receiving 12 mm while a gauge on the other side of the airport
had the 73 mm.

Rather amazing radar though.

Cheers

Greg Curtis

Hello Weather Doods....

I have been watching with great interest the developments this afternoon. My
predictions are that a low will form off Taree and disappear rather quickly
towards NZ. There was a line of good storms which fronted to Goodwood Island
on the Lower Clarence with a bit of electricity this afternoon....but the
strong northeasterly stream pushed them back. The wind did drop
significantly at 0700UTC but has jumped again at the time of this note more
from the NNW. I note that there was a significant rain band on the Longreach
and Charleville radars......however..it sucketh too far south too
quick......I predict the Bureau's forecasts in half as far as rain goes.
Cheers Halden

I agree with you Ben but I believe more for southern NSW. I am hoping that
some activity will develop with the surface low. Will be interesting.

Hey Ben from Brisbane here..

Well.. i was going to wait until one of the NSW guys posted about this
system over the weekend, but it looks like everyone is sitting on the
fence at the moment.. probably not a bad idea.. but..

I think there is a strong possibility of heavy to flood rains developing
over parts of central and southern NSW over the weekend.. perhaps more
likely in southern NSW..

The AVN model has a surface low developing over inland northern NSW
tomorrow afternoon, and then tracking SE across NSW to make it to
southern NSW by Sunday night. Looking at the UNISYS charts

http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/modelproducts/unisys/aus/4panel.htm

there are huge amounts of rain forecast for southern NSW on overnight
Saturday and During Sunday.. and it has been like this for the past 36
hours or so.. although the exact area of heavy precip may change over
the next 24-36 hours, i think it's looking likely that heavy rain will
fall somewhere in southern NSW late in the weekend..

You can now see a cloudband in northern NSW, which is what will become
the low (if the forecasts are correct)..

The upper level trough that is currently in the eastern bight, eastern
SA and western VIC is not all that noticeable on the sat pics (besides
the cold air cells under it).. but this will change as the trough will
become more neutrally orientated overnight tonight and during Saturday
(that is, it will be come more N/S orientated) and strengthening to an
upper level low.. on Sunday this upper low could strengthen even FURTHER
becoming negatively tilted (aligned NE/SW) and moving into central
eastern NSW.. clearly by this time it's a deadset monster, and their
will be a lot of weather associated with it in NSW..

This whole system has been on the charts for almost a week (?) now.. and
we are now entering the timeframe where the models are the most
accurate.. I can't see the forecasts changing too dramatically over the
next 24-36 hours, but you never know..

I think for the NSW guys this is appropriate..

BRING IT ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But for us up here in QLD, where ECL's generally bring miserable SW
winds and dry conditions...

PISS IT OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:)

moistness...no need to panic buddy...

I have a book at home called One Hundred and Fifteen years of Telegraph
Mirror. One page that took my attention tonight was the Wednesday March 28th
1906 headline

 A Fierce Tornado
Great devastation at North Sydney
Many Buildings Completely wrecked
Houses Unroofed and Damaged
One Man Killed
Several people injured
A terrified populace
Two minutes of intense horror.

There is a whole newspaper page devoted to the story, unfortunately even
with my reading glasses I cannot read the small print.
But there is a great map of the path, stretching from up near Lane Cove all
the way S/SE into the Harbour at Neutral Bay.

I could not see the dreaded ' mini tornado ' reference anywhere.

Anybody have any other data and what F rating ?

Hi everyone in NSW or interstate travellers,

Looks like we are heading for yet another NSW ASWA meeting. I must say we
had fun at the last meeting: probably the best meeting so far besides the
AGM. There were more than enough videos and still more to see.

Well the date of the next meeting is Saturday 6th November again at Mario's
house details below. The meeting starts around 5:30 - 6pm. The venue
address is 90 Station St, Arncliffe. Nearest cross roads are Mitchell St.
Station St runs away from the station and he is further up the road away
from the railway station. I would suggest you try and pool each other to
the meeting but there is ample parking in a quiet street.

The meeting itself??

To be discussed is the End of Year Chase with forms supposed to be in to
Matt by then (oops I haven't). Then I think we won't waste any time and
watch the video from Matt and Daniel. They will of course give us a run
down of what happened on that day of the chase in the Hunter!!!

Please remember to bring along:

-a chair to sit on
-money for the pizza
-some drinks and nibbles please
-your stories, photos, laughs etc....

Come along for a fun night. If you haven't been and feel you are shy, you
will blend in no time. trust me!!!!

See you there.

Jimmy Deguara

Claire is a very nice name.

Althea I think was the name of a Cat 3 (again from memory) cyclone that hit
Townsville in the early-mid 70's.

The funny kink in the front moving through SE NSW is evident by the current
temperature contrasts. At 11.00pm it is 11degrees in Canberra putting
Canberra very much in the warm sector. Cooma is at 5 and the coastal
stations of Merimbula and Moruya are also 11 (very unusual for these
stations to be the same as Canberra at this time of night). Mallacoota is 9.
In Victoria I notice that Hamilton (where the coldest of this air is) is
currently 4.

The radar is currently showing what appears to be a frontal line moving up
the coast - now just south of Jervis Bay.

It seems eerily quiet for what is promised to be a memorable weekend. In
Canberra we had a warmish day in the low 20's with just a few cu and some
more serious looking ACAS later on but that hasn't produced any weather as
yet.

But I guess I must echo Ben's comment (the NSW version that is!!)

Patrick

Hi Michael,

Are there any damage photos? If so, perhaps you'd be able to scan them
and upload them for everyone to see and make their own deductions and
opinions? It's so difficult to compare 90's F-scale with 00's F-scale,
as the building methods were so different to what they are nowadays.

An interesting report though. I have a small handful of reports like
this for Sydney dating back pre-1950's. With people being injured by
flying bricks etc. I can go through and send these to you if you like?
If so, email me personally (it'll take me a while to weed it out though)

I've also got a few reports like this for Brisbane, some of them are
very interesting, with houses being completely destroyed. I've also got
reports that have had farm houses being completely destroyed, from
memory, some reports even go on to say that it was also difficult to
tell that a farmhouse had actually been built on the site!!!

Lots of interesting reports out there...from tornadoes, to cows being
frozen to death in the middle of summer after being trapped in 6 feet of
hail...to hail drifts lasting throughout the month of December...

> I could not see the dreaded ' mini tornado ' reference anywhere.

While I'm not 100% sure, I believe the term "mini tornado" was devised
by the Courier Mail (in Brisbane *gulp*) on the 22nd of August, 1945.
This was the earliest report I had ever found of a "mini tornado," -
does anyone else have an earlier report?
