Can't speak for any other Adelaide chaser Jimmy (Andrew?) but while
yesterday was unusual (humid, still, almost continual thunder during the
day, over 35mm of welcome rain) apart from a little small hail there was no
severe weather to spaek of....

Saturday 2/10 6pm

A gorgeous fog has rolled in at around sunset in Blackheath. It's quite
thick, I can barely see a tree in the valley behind us thats about 30
metres away, if that.

Call it upslope fog, or hill fog or low cloud but by golly its bloody
beautiful when it drifts in from the east. It started as whisps of
vapour and quickly became very thick. It's coolish now, around 11
degrees or thereabouts, as I haven't checked the temp for a little
while.

Hey Jane, Everyone..

The Storm Machine forecast soundings have never worked since i tried
about this time last year.. It's a shame as i suspect they may have the
environmental temperature line (the red line), whereas the soundings on
the URL below don't..

Just in case you don't know about these, we can get forecast soundings
for anywhere in Australia from both the AVN and MRF runs..

AVN

MRF

Hi Ben and the list,

Ben the soundings on the storm machine do work for some of the stations and
then soundings came in within an hour. I think it was the usual -
Williamtown and Wagga that gave proper soundings. It is the lack of uniform
standards by the Bureau that mean that such data cannot be used from other
stations. The soundings for today are contaminated by cloud.

Yes I had used those other sounding data that Ben is indicating for a
couple of years but I don't use them anymore. I have found following the
Lifted Index maps and satellite data the best indicator for storm
predictions. The same site also allows you to plot the various winds and
therefore helps give some vertical profile of the upper atmosphere.

The storms are around 5 pm firing up along the line around the 150E
parallel One of the storms seems to have a v-notch near the Moree
area... There also seems to be another band of very active storms in the
NW of the state. James Harris is currently at Boorowa and may intercept a
couple of little storms out there. I don't think much is happening around
that area. But he wanted to get out of the rain and into the storms.

Now tomorrow, I was thinking of heading to the mid-north coast or wherever
the action was. I will see in the morning for the latest. I will leave here
by 8am. Contact me (02) 96271943 if interested. If someone would like to
drive, I could also tag along with them.

Good luck with the storm chasing Jimmy!

Half your luck to the people in SA, NSW and northern Vic. I'm in Melbourne
and we've had one of the most revolting (read: boring) days weatherwise for
a long time. Light winds, cold, haze, smog, high level cloud, no sun and of
course no rain. Despite some rain (18 mm) a few days ago we seem to be back
into a dry phase, despite model predictions of a few days ago of around 70
mm for the period around now.

Are there any other Melb. people that are pissed off with the weather we've
been having the last few years?!

Frustrated,

Phil.

p.s. I am a newcomer to this list...g'day to all weather lovers around the
country.

Welcome to the list Phil.

Can you introduce yourself: what you do , how you became a weather buff and
what sort of weather you are interested in...... Well you get the drift..

Yes I feel for the Victorians but particularly the South Aussies!!! People
fealt sorry for us in Sydney the past few summers. Oh well, that is the way
the weather goes. But I can tell you, storm chasing is the best way to see
weather. Hoping it comes to you is really a waist of time.

Jimmy suggested an introduction and here it is...

I live in Melbourne (Heidelberg), although I am originally from Perth (I
have been in Melb. nearly three years). I work as a research scientist with
the Dept. of Natural Resources and Env. (state Govt.) in the freshwater
ecology field (I sample rivers and wetlands for water quality). I have
always been keen on meteorology (i.e. from as far back as I can remember)
and have kept rainfall records (I have a Nylex rain gauge and keep records
only on my calendar now). I also keep an avid eye on the weather info on the
net (models, charts etc.) and am often seen gazing at the sky.

I tried (unsuccessfully) to join the Bureau's training program for
observers and forecasters back in 1994 after I finished my degree in Env.
Sci...I feel my mathematics and physics let me down in that quest. I am 27
now but I am happy with my current job and the people there know of my
fascination with the weather and are contantly asking "what's the weather
going to be like".

I am particularly interested in "unstable" weather i.e., thunderstorms etc.
and I love colourful sunsets/sunrises. I take photos whenever I can (this
needs improving). I stumbled across this email list a few weeks back when
searching for weather resources in Australia.

Regards,

Phil.

Thanks all for the discussion and URL's re alternative sources for soundings.

I notice on the 0730z NPMOC GMSD image that there appears to be a very large storm near Bourke. I think it is falling between radar sites as I think the Moree radar is picking up the cells  further east.

It has been a very wet day in Canberra with constant rain progressively becoming heavier through the day. The airport has had 16mm from 9am to 6pm - I will have received at least double that in Higgins (when I wade through to the guage - have already saturated a couple of pairs of shoes today..).

The venue address is 90 Station St, Arncliffe (Mario's house). He suggests to make sure you use a street directory. Nearest cross roads are Mitchell St. Station St runs away from the station and he is further up the road away from the railway station. I would suggest you try and pool each other to the meeting but there is ample parking in a quiet street. What will the meeting be about??? Well, I will be giving a brief talk about "Storm Chase Observation Strategy and Safety". On top of this, there is bound to be a lot of discussions about the recent events in Sydney and NSW. And you certainly can't miss the video footage and photos we have of the storms. Come along and you will have a great time. Please bring along a few nibblies and drinks and money for the pizza if you wish. Even if this is your first time and your are not a member and new to the list, you will feel so welcome that you would think you had known everyone for years. Believe me if you like severe weather, you have no excuse...but to come along and enjoy!!!! Note it on your diary and come have a ball. Please indicate to me jdeguara at ihug.com.au if you will attend or send apologies if you are a member. Hope to see you there. I can probably give a few a lift along the line of Seven Hills Wentworthville areas if need be...
