Hi List,

Lucky Daniel reported:

;(looking north) I could see a very dark area of the cloud, so naturally I
;enquired. (2:10pm) From where i was i could see a menacing looking front,
;and a lowering, with a brown/pinky rain curtain. Associated with this
;lowering was alot of swirling scud which was situated near the ground and
;being quickly sucked up into the storm. Then over the next few minutes the
;scud, grew denser, and organised itself, so now the lowering was broader and
;more defined. It was it this stage i discovered my fatal error- no camera.
;Then a block of cloud slowly spun out of the lowering. Initially it was very
;coarse, and more like scud, but as the cloud descended, it became smoother,
 ;and rotation was evident.
 ;...
;After reporting it to the BOM who thought, that it was 'interesting'....

My current guess would be one of those lapse-rate induced funnels.
Did anyone look at yesterday's soundings? I also wonder whether
the scud you saw was marking a gust front so it got pushed
(rather than sucked) up into the storm. If the storm
``sucked'' (no pun intended), the BOM would have had some
reason to be more excited about the storm than a mere `interesting'.
Congrats on your sigthings, Daniel,

Harald (under clear skies)

On behalf of everyone who attended the first (?) Qld storm spotter
seminar, I would like to thank Anthony Cornelius, Jeff Callaghan and his
team at the severe weather section at the BoM, and everyone else who
helped behind the scenes to make it such a success.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and believe that all those who attended did as
well. It was great to see such a broad cross-section of the community
attend, and such an interest taken by all. We were treated to a tour of
the Regional Forecasting Centre, a talk by Jeff about SEQ. storm
formation and cyclones, and to top it off, Anthony's presentation of
spotter techniques.

By early next week, there'll be a page up with plenty of pics that Ral's
kindly took throughout the afternoon, and a brief rundown of the days
activities.

Cheers all,
Rosco.
(who has his fingers crossed that there will be storms on Thursday
because he has the day off work :-p )

This is to Jimmy in Particular but I would like everyone else to read also,

I was shocked that a president of an Association would put a blunt
statement like " New South Wales has the most members but today you would
have thought it was a South Australian meeting (no harm intended SA)"

There was really no need for that statement and I hope in the future no
statements like this come through again.

We cannot help that we only have 5 members all up, but we are trying our
best, and we are working on more ways to attract more members, and we are
trying different ways to attract members. I could ramble on for hours about
this, but I won't. If members have some other arrangements for the date
provided, then let it be. I am sure about 99% of members have a life
outside of the Association.

Because of my lack in knowledge of this sort of thing ie. Weather in
general and being a State Representative,
it has taken me a while to "settle in", and as some of you might know it is
hard for me to figure out what is going on most of the time. So I will
leave it there and say, I am trying my best.

Hey Ben from Brisbane here..

I second that.. Anthony did an EXCELLENT job, and his presentation was
both very professional and well laid out.. It was great to watch a
presentation like that with all Australian pictures as examples of storm
features..

We are hoping to put Anthony's guide up on BSCH ASAP..

We also have a university student that wants to make a storm chasing
docco with us!!! She contacted the BOM during the week, and her name and
number was passed on to us at the seminar yesterday.. I called her last
night and she is REALLY keen! Most definitely another ASWA member..

She (yes! a female chaser! WOOHOOO!!!) wants to come out on a chase with
some Brisbane people, and record some sounds etc etc.. the docco will be
approx 12 mins or so in length and will be broadcast on a Brisbane radio
station (although she has not found an outlet yet)..

I like the sounds of that day off of yours on Thursday Rosco (I'm on
holidays from tomorrow on).. looks like we could get some decent storms
from this next system..

I find this quite amazing as the conditions in the Illawarra just 60kms
south were sunny with weak stratocumulus along the ocean. In fact we did not
even get a single drop of rain. Unless of course I missed something whilst
painting the house insides.

This is not the first time that I have seen such a dramatic contrast between
the two cities.

Hi There,
Welcome to the eighth edition of the Australian Severe Weather Association online newsletter. I hope you all enjoy it and any thoughts or comments can be send to " Kathryn Jolly at astroman at chariot.net.au " also please don't forget if there is any information regarding the Australian Severe Weather Association that you would normally send to the list, please send it to me instead for inclusion into the newsletter. That is what it is here for.
Happy reading
THE AUSTRALIAN SEVERE WEATHER ASSOCIATION INC WEEKLY NEWSLETTER -Issue 8
The Australian Severe Weather Association Inc (ASWA) is here to provide a platform for discussion into severe weather, research and education. A lot has been written about about Australia's severe weather in the past and you can view many different stories of people's experience with the weather in the offical ASWA magazine "Storm News". Discussion about the latest weather and a great place to learn from is the aus-wx mailing list from which ASWA Inc was originally formed. The mailing list is filled with people who are eager to help teach others about all aspects of meterology and to share their experiences.
Membership into the ASWA Inc is $30 a year (with access to the Bureau of Meterology's radar and a quarterly subscription to "Storm News) or if you don't wish for radar $20 a year (with the quarterly subscription to "Storm News" still remaining.) Both visitors and members are welcomed to attend State Meetings. State Meetings are held in Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland in their capital cites. Members can also have the chance to buy an ASWA T-shirt in either polo or round neck styles. If you would like to join you can visit the ASWA Inc website at http://www.severeweather.asn.au/ and fill in an online application form or get in contact with your State Rep. All details can be found at the website.

The QLD ASWA Div and BOM Seminar
On Saturday, 11th of September, the BoM and the ASWA held their first joint seminar together. The aim of this seminar, was to assist in educating the severe thunderstorm spotters, on thunderstorms, their role in the community and spotting techniques. From the feedback that I have received, the seminar seemed to be quite a
success, and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. There was something new to learn, for all who attended, from novice to amateur meteorologist.
Afternoon tea was supplied by ASWA, and provided an opportunity for many keen weather enthusiasts, to talk to other people and ask questions.I believe that there have been some photos taken of this memorable
occassion, and will be placed on a website when they're developed and scanned.

Social Night for Western Australia
The WA members are organising a social get together for saturday the 2nd of October. I was thinking about organising lunch somewhere then some videos at one of the members place's and then the meeting after that.
This would make nearly a whole day event so it needs to be planned a few weeks in advance as I know some people have things to do on Saturday mornings
The last social event organised was a lunch at Rosie O'Gradys Tavern in South Perth. This was a big success. I want to plan something similar to this. This will give some members who havent each other a chance to do so. If you have any ideas on a location for this social event that will provide a good social atmosphere at a reasonable price (no more than $15
per head) then let myself or Ira Fehlberg know as soon as possible so we can organise this

How Can We Improve Meetings to Cater for Everyones Needs
-First, I think perhaps a yearly planner has to be adopted wherever possible to help give some warning in terms of dates of future events including video nights and other activities. Now, meetings in NSW will be held normally on the first Saturday of each month but we were unfortunately thrown around a little because of a planned venue change not coming on time. Hopefully that will be ready by the first Saturday in October.
(Editors Note) A yearly planner for the SA/NT division was done some months back makes life a lot easier, and I strongly recommend it.
-I think there are members who are not reading the aussie-weather list e-mails and therefore were not aware of the date for the NSW meeting
-Some people are not reading the ASWA newsletter. Now this relates to the problem of people not reading the aussie-weather list e-mail. The solution to this is for e-mail announcements to be e-mailed by the mass e-mail
member form sender. Please make use of this for ASWA items please. I think mail will have to go out to those who are not on e-mail by state reps sening snail mail or a simple phone call be made.
-People, particularly the younger members, work on Saturdays. There is no real solution to this problem except perhaps keeping with the formal base date as was suggested decided by each state.
-Some people have lost interest or just are undecided whether to go or not. They then probably decide that they may turn up to the next one. Please, try and turn up to as many as possible wherever possible. This allows for a
friendly exchange of stories, information and ideas. It allows newer members to meet others and also feel part of a unique group. Your input is extremely important. Even if you turn up for one hour at the beginning or the end; that is better than not turning up at all.
- It is winter which means nothing is happening (for Qld and NSW) so a lot of the members particularly in the eastern states will not think there is much to discuss. Believe me, that is when you reflect on the past and
prepare for the future. Such ideas as how to take lightning photographs, what to do in a storm chase, how can you storm chase effectively and safely. Now these can be discussed during the non-active months of the year
by members. I would like to see more members giving presentations of their be it brief and simple to help them get the confidence of some public speaking and help spread the message if invited to a local meeting in a club of sorts. I have done a few of these already and it is another way of educating the public. The main thing is that we are going through a phase and I think the interest will spark up again. But this should not be something we can expect during the winter months. I would like to see the interest maintained throughout the year. If you have any ideas discussed or would like something discussed in a meeting, please approach your State
Representative.
The key to success of ASWA is activity created by the members themselves. You are ASWA.
Jimmy Deguara
A Message from Jimmy D
I think there needs to be a little more communication between members offline as well. One thing I would like to propose is for people that live near each other and know others particularly off the list to keep each other informed of coming dates as well as just chat on weather events. You could compare what happened in your region as compared to others living nearby. You could also car pool if the need arises. We need to try and increase attendances back to the respectable levels earlier in the year.
End of Year Chase Update
The disclaimer for the 1999 End of Year Chase should be up within the next week. Once this is up, a version will be made available to download from the members section of the ASWA site. You can either print it out and mail it too me or give it to your State Rep at your next ASWA meeting. Copies will also be availabe at meetings in case you can't print them out.
Confirmation for attendance to the chase will be extended 2 weeks until Friday October 15th. If you have any questions or queries please email me at disarm at braenet.com.au
Thanks for your time

Hey Ben from Brisbane here..

Steve Baynham took some pictures of the house that was struck by
lightning on August 28.. he has just scanned them and i have put them up
on BSCH..

http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/pictures/steve/temp/damage.htm

Some nasty damage there for a lightning strike.. but it was definitely
over-rated by the media (no surprises there)..

I have also added 24 new pictures to the picture gallery..

Wow - great job! It must have taken you a while to compile this, it's
always great to get the 'goss' on what is happening in ASWA - keep up
the great work, I always look forward to reading these each week.

doubt people east of Parramatta would have even seen it. It was a very
cloudy day.
