Hey Jane, Marty, Everyone..

Thanks guys.. your comments are very much appreciated..

One thing i forgot to mention last night.. there is also a version of
the main menu with sounds (Some thunder for SDS ridden people.. and then
the midi "Riders on the storm" by the doors).. Unfortunately it only
works with Netscape Navigator 4+ at the moment.. If you have Internet
Explorer it will not work properly..

http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/index2.htm

This page is exactly the same as the www.bsch.simplenet.com page.. so
you can bookmark it and access the site from the above URL if you wish..

Thanks to Andrew Mcdonald from Melbourne for finding the thunder wav
file..

Ben,

I'm running Internet Explorer 5.0 and the thunder and music works fine. Also, good work on the homepage man. Haven't finished looking at it yet though.

Marty..

not meaning to be pedantic, but light is not reflected by the atmosphere as
you describe, but rather refracted (a very different physical phenomenon).
Refraction comes about from gradients in propagation speeds through the
atmosphere.. which are determined by humidity, temperature, and pressure. As
suggested this is greatest under inversion conditions when temperature
increases with height, and humidity decreases rapidly with height.

The classic example of this is the Mt Gambier radar, which often clearly
observes the Grampians during the early morning, despite the unrefracted
beam height being >10000 feet at this distance.
A visual example I have often seen is the Yarra Valley where the mountains
east of Melbourne can look extraordinarily tall from a distance of 10's of
km during the early morning when viewed from below a radiative inversion.

I am unfamiliar with the refraction of sound waves, but since the speed of
sound in still air is sqrt(1.4*287*T), gradients of T (note this is in
Kelvins) must cause refraction, and it is conceivable that under certain
conditions sound will be "bent" back into the ground.

Cheers,

David.

It's "ymlv" - but Wyoming don't have Melbourne soundings at the moment.
You could try Storm Machine though.

Ben,

Great homepage...

Thanks also for the work in making FNMOC loops available - you have created some nice pages. In particular doing the coding for each run on each day is a significant pain in the rear end and has required a fair bit of tedious slog.. so again thanks and well done. (PS hope the cats are recovering.. ;-) )
