Hi all,

Got this msg recently from another list:

>I read in new scientists Last Word recently (~6 months) how thermal
>inversions can create barriers to sound. If there is one of these between you
>and the lightning then the thunder will be reflected ... a thermal inversion
>is where there is a layer of warm humid air trapped below a cold one.

One of the main aspects of a temperature inversion, as far as I know, is it's
ability to reflect light from the ground. An amazing, though apparently very
rare, example of this is being able to see land from beyond the horizon
reflected up in the sky.

I guess if a thermal inversion can reflect light waves, then it's not too far a
stretch to suggest that it would probably reflect sound waves, too. Though for
light waves to be reflected it seems to me they need to hit the inversion layer
at a very small angle (almost parallel). So I'd guess that the behaviour of
sound waves would be similar in that the sound source would need to quite a
distance away, and relatively close to the temperature inversion for there to be
any reflection. And (I'm thinking aloud here really), if the lightning was so
far away then the thunder probably wouldn't be heard, anyway.

Any thoughts on this?

Marty.

Hey Ben from Brisbane here..

We had some early morning heavy showers around SE QLD this morning.. I
had 12mm here in just under 10 mins, and the rain was rather grainy for
a minute or two there..

The showers are moving east from inland parts of SE QLD.. There are more
showers developing towards the west on radar now..

Last time i looked the Lifted Index was -1 over Brisbane at 4pm today..

Hi all,

To answer from my own experience.

I grew up on a farm that was 20 km from the nearest beach. Some very still (and
cold) mornings I could hear the waves on the coast. Not only could I hear at times a
general rumble but independant crashes of distinct waves. I would put this down to
exactly as you described. Sound being reflected off inversions.

I also had seen on many occasions the mountains East of Esperance (about 100 km
away), up side down in the sky just as the sun was about to rise over the horizon in
the morning. normally these were below the horizon.

Again a reflection of light off an inversion.

It happens.

Hey Mark, Everyone..

Grainy rain is very small hail mixed in with the rain.. or almost
completely melted hail.. It's slang :)

We actually had quite a nice storm come through the northern suburbs of
Brisbane this morning.. I ended up getting 24mm up to 10am or so.. with
12mm from a heavy shower around 6:30am, and then a further 12mm from a
storm around 9:30-10am..

I say storm lightly.. I didn't witness any lightning or see any thunder
(I drove straight through it on the way to college).. but there was a
nice guster on it with 25 knot winds with the guster and very very heavy
rain.. The storm also had a small amount of max intensity just NW of me,
and then a large area of max intensity when it moved offshore (just east
of Moreton Island - the northern most island on the Brisbane local scale
radar)..

I have uploaded a loop of it here:

Ben

We were watching the "storms" on the radar here. I was quite surprised by
the intensity on the radar, getting into the pink at times. On the satellite
image there was no indication that any strong convection was happening. The
cloud tops on GMS never rose to much higher than 500hPa. A lot of activity
along the NSW coastal fringe down to about Newcastle as well. All in all a
pretty interesting day.

Thanks for these loops you've been doing lately, Ben.

We had some weak cells around most of the day, but particularly late
morning near Ballina, then between Evans Head and Grafton mid afternoon.
All activity was very close to the coast and more like congestus than
storms, but some nice bases and heavy showers about. I observed lightning
to the south on dusk from an east-west aligned band of congestus and cbs
about 20-30 ks south.

Hey Mark, Everyone..

Yep, i was very surprised at the intensity of the rainfall in the storm
and its appearance on both the sat pics and radar.. Event the visual
appearance of the sky before the storm was terrible.. just a blanket of
crap (excuse the pun).. and then all of a sudden a gust front appears
out of nowhere.. It definitely was an interesting day, and going by the
models the next upper level trough could be interesting.. the track of
the system is quite interesting..

On the subject of models.. as most of us know, Michael Fewings is quite
busy.. and he hasn't been able to make a self updating 'all times' page
for the NGP and MRF models from FNMOC.. so i have put in a couple of
hours and made up some model animation's for the next 7-8 days.. You can
find them at:

http://www.bsch.simplenet.com/ben/temploops.htm

The animation's are very very smooth, with both models having 12 hours
maps.. You have a few different options for the loops.. you can flick
through the images manually, or select a continuous loop.. I will keep
adding the loops to this page until Michael has the time to make a self
updating page..

>From these animation's you have access to the Brisbane Storm Chasers
Homepage, which leads me to my next email..

Hi Everyone,

Paul Mossman contacted me this evening to say that he is in Kurri Kurri and
that if anyone from this area would like to meet up with him for a chat
could they please contact him on the following number which is 0418 662753.

Thanks,

Matthew Piper

P.S. Sydney missed out on all the action today. Not a single drop of rain in
the city at all. Seems all the action was to the north of here. Paul was
telling me that Kurri Kurri had around 15mm whilst nearby Cessnock was dry
as a bone. Shows how local and close to the coast these storms were.

Hey Ben from Brisbane here..

Well it's finally finished.. you can now access the full version of The
Brisbane Storm Chasers Homepage at:

http://www.bsch.simplenet.com

You might be wondering why it has taken that clown so long to build that
damn website?

BSCH is currently made up of over 6 000 files, totaling 228 meg.. this
includes over 400 pictures taken in SE QLD over the past year or two..
2350+ files in the archives including a mountain of radar and tracker
images/event loops (with another 70+ meg to be added over the next month
or so).. and 140 model animation's, with 20 or so animation's for
Australia (hundreds more waiting to be completed).. the links section
will also be packed to the brim by the time i'm finished with it as
well..

There are a couple of sections that are incomplete at the moment.. these
will be finished over the coming months.. There may also be a few bugs
here and there, if you could email me and report any of these it would
be much appreciated..

Anthony Cornelius and I will be issuing forecasts on BSCH for SE QLD in
the coming months.. these forecasts will commence in the next week or
so..

I have devoted the past 5+ months of my life to this website, so i would
appreciated any comments or suggestions that people have about the
site..

Hi Ben,

The site looks excellent... can't wait for the "sever weather potential" section
to be firing!

Well done.
