I'm by no means an expert (far from it actually!) But, one thing that I
have wondered is how does plate techtonics interact with oceanic

The North Atlantic Drift / Gulf Stream is a good example of a chaotic system, read the article about the North Wall effect in this URL somewhere.... this affects Britains weather directly.

I guess we can only hope.. the weather's getting very boring in
Melbourne - I got excited the other morning by 0.3mm of drizzle :(

OBTW, this motion gif was made from what has become my most pirated
video! It has been used legitimately in many programs, but if you see
this lightning strike on any of the major networks, please let me know
so I can verify that it was properly licensed.

Thanks,

I added a new lightning motion gif to my lightning page. To view it, go
to:

http://www.k5kj.net/noframe.htm

Then find and select lightning in the contents table. It may take a
minute or two to load at approximately 388k in size, but it's worth the
wait.

Plate techtonics is certainly out of my area of expertise, but I
would think we would have to be very luck (or unlucky) to see major
changes in oceanic circulation due to plate techtonics in our life
time. Certainly, on long time scales this must be a factor, and with
Australia drifting north (the last Figure I saw was at about 2cm a
year), it would seem likely that eventually the whole familiar cycle
of El Nino/La Nina, among other things, will alter. There have been
many studies which have looked at the role of changed land /sea
distributions, mountains ranges etc on weather and climate.. but the
results are usually only very specific to the considered problem and
very model dependent.

As for chaos influencing climate more generally, certainly this is
true, but it needs to be remembered that a system (and infact many
non-linear systems) are inherently unpredictable due to non-linear
error growth, but the attractor of the system is stable. That is,
given a set of initial conditions you do not know where in the cloud
of possible trajectories you will lie, but you can be fairly certain
the cloud of trajectories will sweep stable regions of phase space.
We see this with the progression of daily weather - you do not know
what the weather will be like on a given day (beyond about a week
ahead), but you can be fairly confident it will not lie far outside
of the previously observed bounds (I hope I haven't offended any
chaos insiders!).

Of course, if the system is unstable and close to
the edge, a small push may send it over, but I guess the
atmosphere/ocean system tends to be fairly robust.

David.

All of us have bias and personal filters that hinder our perspective at
times. Personally, I find just as many christians can be extreme in
their views, even about weather events. I know, I grew up in a
conservative/religious family. That's why I live up here - to get away
from them! Should see them when they visit me and spy my Buddha statue!
"Satan, get behind me!"

Fine here on Saturday Morning, 4 degrees at 8 am and should reach 10 or
more today, very mild. We had very light showers yesterday and the
easterly flow of clouds (the stuff that gave sydney decent rain)
virtually pettered out at our area - that is the band of cloud ended at
the top of the ranges. Out Oberon way it was fine and sunny all day.

Anyone got any more insights into the prospects of colder weather
coming?
The Central Ranges our hangin' out!

It's not the first time that the planets lining up theory has been thrown

would either.
