Hi All

Well after months of inactivity a small storm developed over the southern suburbs of Melbourne last night and move towards Phillip Island. I jumped on the net about 10.30pm last night after an exhausting day looking after my nephew for the day and loaded up the melbourne radar, and to my surprise saw a cell over the bay with pink in it. Went outside and had a quick look in the light rain but could not see anything, went back inside. A few minutes later my brother came around and said he had seen lighning out on a drive. So off we went to check out the lightning. From looking at the radar loop we could tell this cell was moving rapidily so we decided on just going to find a open location out of the suburban lights, so we headed down the nepean freeway towards Frankston and saw quite a few flashes of lightning, but only 1 fork, the cell was moving too fast. So the chase ended quickly, we were both stuffed from looking after the kid and deciced to call it quits. But it was nice to see lightning again, almost forgot what t looked like.

Winter storms in Melbourne are famous for their lack of lightning so this a nice change considering you usually see 1 flash and thats it.

Well things are looking better for the coming days in Melbourne.

Good Storms

Hi all,

A mild day (currently 10.3)with passing showers from
rapidly moving weak Cb at 11.30am. I have barely
received 1mm of rain so far - but radar and
satellite imagery suggest a more substantial
band of showers is not far off to the west.

The coming week looks a little better for some
decent winter weather and some badly needed
snow falls - Wednesday/Thursday looks particularly
interesting (for this season anyway).

Any webcam shots of the alpine areas are not
looking very appealing at the moment - hopefully
that will change over the next couple of days.

A particularly pathetic sight is the web-cam
of Friday Flat at Thredbo http://www.ski.com.au/info/snowcams/friday.html
(for those who see this message later the scene
is of a few hundred desperate skiers crammed into
a small area of human-made snow with lots of
people with umbrellas - ie rain - standing
around watching...)

Roll on the 540 thickness line,

Patrick

I told a couple of guys this morning that Sydney may be in or just missing
out on thunderstorms. The LI got it spot on and the indications were of
warm air and some instability from this morning.

On radar at the moment, there is a rasin band and embedded thunderstorms
heading E-SE but general the whole system is moving E. It is a text book
case of a cold front situation that occurs usually in early spring. To get
an idea of what it looks like, refer to the type of cloud band in the following
Although a different time of the year, it is initially looking like

but as it approaches, will have the following type of situation..

Oh well, We will enjoy this before the westerlies break through.

Hi all

Yeah Chas I noticed that hook on the radar, I've saved a loop of it if
anyone cares to comment.

Looks wild, doesn't it? Unfortunately there'd be few witnesses to anything
out there - perhaps some brave fishermen!

Front passing through Adelaide right now. It's hailing like crazy! This
is a goodie! Pity it's too dark to photograph!!

Hi all,

A more respectable winters day in Canberra today.

The showers from the rapidly moving Cb merged into
a rainband for a few hours. The band then broke
into more passing showers about 5.00pm.

Loud thunder was heard around 6pm with one or two
more flashes as a fast moving cell passed nearby.

Received 4.5mm in Higgins - a passable total given
that this was front No 1 of this low. Front no 2
is expected tomorrow morning (the one giving
Adelaide hail on Sunday night) - it will be
interesting to see what if anything is left after
its overland journey through the night.

Front no 3 is expected tomorrow evening (at 10.30pm
Sunday, the animations show it forming in the Bight
at the moment) and should arrive after daytime
heating has added to the instability. This one
promises a bit more oomph in terms of cold air.

Snow should start improving in the Alps ...

A happier Patrick from Canberra.
