Can someone tell me what GASP stands for again? As well as some of the
other models? I did have their definitions somewhere but I cannot find
them.

Laurier or others,

Do you know of any particularly cold spots in Blackheath, ie: hollows or
spots that are colder than say, the actual township?

I was down in the "Frog Hollow" area of Blackheath recently and it
definately seemed a bit colder down there than at our place. There was
more frost on the ground down that way and it did "feel" colder. Have
you got any idea on how much colder it might get down that way on a
still clear morning or indeed any other places in the Blackheth area
that might also be colder than say, the township?

Also, is it true that Blackheath is around one degree colder than say,
Katoomba, generally speaking?

Thanks,

Lindsay Pearce.

Hey Lindsay..

ECMWF stands for 'European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts'..
and you can find some info on ECMWF here..

http://www.ecmwf.int/

As Marky Hardy posted, GASP stands for 'Global Assimilated Spectral
Prognosis'.. and you can find some info on both GASP and also LAPS,
which stands for 'Limited area prediction system' here..

http://www.bom.gov.au/reguser/by_prod/nwc/ab_nmc.shtml

NOGAPS stands for 'The Navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction
System'.. and you can find some info on NOGAPS here..

http://www.fnmoc.navy.mil/wxmap/doc/wxmap.nogaps.html

and also some info on past, present, and future developments..

http://www.nrlmry.navy.mil/aboutnrl/nogaps_history.html

MRF stands for 'Medium Range Forecasts'.. and you can find some info on
MRF here..

http://nic.fb4.noaa.gov:8000/research/mrf.html

and also here..

http://sgi62.wwb.noaa.gov:8080/web2/tocold.html

I think AVN just stands for Aviation Forecasts.. and AVN and MRF are
very much alike under 72 hours.. and the above links apply for AVN as
well..

Sunny, Sunny, Sunny, Sunny

Mid July and not one really decent frontal passage in Adelaide this winter.
Not one decent fall of hail. Not one frontal storm. Strange. It feels
like late August already.......

Same here in Melbourne Phil, only 9mm of rain so far this month in Kilsyth,
and another mild sunny day ( like spring) 17.7c in the city yesterday and
17.5c in Kilsyth. It was chilly last night 2.7c in Kilsyth but it is already
(11.15am) up to 15c here. Big HP set to dominate the weather over Victoria
for most of next week. Dane

Hey Ben from Brisbane here..

I have put up a new page at NEMAS, it's titled "A Guide to the 500mb
maps" This page was written by myself from what i have picked up over
the past 9 months.. If anyone has any comments/corrections on the page i
would like to hear them..

You can find the page at:

http://www.nemas.net/edu/index.htm

I have tried to keep it as simple as possible, and hopefully i have
explained everything clearly.. i will add some guided examples ASAP..

Having just spent the last 2 days 're-vamping' my weather summaries in
Excel 97 I couldn't help noticing that all the wind run records for
every month to June this year are showing negative anomalies of between
12 and 17%.
I'm sure no alien trees from another planet have suddenly come up and
propagated so as to have blocked off the wind gauge (it's 15 metres or
more above the ground)!
Unfortunately I don't have a recording anemometer so I can work out
which wind direction would show the greatest departures.
Averages of course are not the best guide from which to measure
departures but over the 6 months medians occur on both sides of the mean
so skewing's a problem (as always with my data).
The anomalies were larger in January to March ,when barometric pressure
anomalies were also negative, then April to June. In other words it was
less windy with lower pressure.
I need to do some correlation and/or other statistical analysis with it
all but it makes me wonder what's going on..presumably very anticyclonic
weather for at least the last 3 months, but otherwise....?

Hi all,

When you're browsing the net and come across weather images that look
familiar (ie. they are yours or someone you know), note if the images are
credited in any way - photographers, links back.

James Chambers brought to my attention a site using one of our Hail pics,
totally unauthorised at:
http://fieldhockey.net/fieldhockeydita/goalsticdith.html

It comes from this page (5th image) and has been modified:
http://australiansevereweather.simplenet.com/photography/hail02.htm

I've noted several instances over the years of sites using our pics without
first seeking permission to do so, I know there's not much we can do about
copying, but by bringing it to the site owners attention we can at least
let them know it shouldn't be done!

I've also had the BoM (on the cover of their "Capturing Opportunities in
the provision of meteorological service" book - ie - how to get money from
the public for weather products!), AMOS, and the Sun Herald (NSW) use my
lightning photos without permission (and without paying) - so it happens
off the web too.

Michael
