Hi everyone,

I came across this person on another list who briefly mentioned that her modem
was destroyed by lightning, so I quickly responded with some cheerful questions
about her encounter. She replied with the following:

>It was a very brief storm that occurred over the outskirts of Lismore NSW at
>approximately 0508 on the morning of (I think) 13.5.99. I was fast asleep,
>when what seemed to be a single flash of lightning & a massive boom of
>thunder appeared to have joined me in my bedroom. It was enough to give the
>impression that it had happened inside the room. The lightning woke me, as
>bright as daylight, if not more so. As far as I can make out there was no
>other lightning close by, and no more flashes followed. I reckon that one

>showing its lights. The power supply had not been affected & lights were
>on. Even mains power digital clocks had not been stopped.
>
>In case of further flashes, I shut down the computer & unplugged it.
>
>Next morning (0700) I switched on as usual & tried to log on to collect &
>send email. The modem was dead. Computer unaffected. Phone line OK.
>
>My tame Mac expert looked at modem & HD later that day & said that the chip
>in the modem appeared to have been "cooked". I guess the surge that did
>this must have come down the phone line. My expert told me that modems are
>deliberately made with fragile chips, so as to protect the phone line by
>acting as a kind of fuse.
>
>Later I spoke to several other people, who said that they had the same
>impression that it was a single flash/boom right over (or in!) their
>houses.
>
>No-one else reported problems with equipment or power supplies.

I find it interesting that she only heard this strike, and no others, yet her
friends also experienced the bright flash of light. Also, that her computer was
not affected at all, and her modem only to a small degree. If the lightning used
the phone line as it's conducter then I doubt the destruction of a tiny chip in
the modem would prevent the lightning from reaching the computer.

I'm guessing the lightning struck some distance away, creating a power surge
which carried to her residence. The surge was probably only just big enough to
cause the small chip in the modem to fry, but not carry to the computer. But I'd
love to know what caused the light "as bright as daylight, if not more so". It
must have been pretty damn close for her to detect this light only being awoken
by the lightning which caused it. Then having her friends experience similar
bright flashes, after she reported not hearing any subsequent thunder.

Any thoughts?

Marty.

Hi Marty and all,

The first thing that came to my mind, was a long distance lightning
strike. Sometimes lightning can travel 20+km from the storm. Is it
possible that a flash occurred near/above her and her neighbours, but
actually striked many km away? Lightning always takes the least path of
resistence, but there have been quite a few cases of lightning strikes
striking up to 20km in front of the storm. This would have caused her
and her neighbours to hear/see the lightning strike, while perhaps
hitting a phone line many km away to fry her modem.

However, one would think that anyone else with a modem would have
experienced the same/similar problems. However, in my short experience
with lightning, it is one of the most fascinating and unpredictable
phenomena I have ever encountered. It can completely destroy something,
while leaving another object unscathed.

Just my 2c,

Anthony Cornelius

Probably the EMP which took it out.

Brings a whole new meaning to "flash downgrade"

Agreed. No link for dangerous yahoo's like this. He'll need
to clearly demonstrate a much safer attitude change. It's one
think to get caught up in a storm by accident by being in the
wrong place at the wrong time and quite another to punch
it in the guts bringing unnecessary danger to self and
companions.

Hi all,

I know this is not purely weather based but I believe it is
important enough to warrant publication to this list.

This email came through another list I am on detailing
lightning photography and copyright of works. It is
concerning Geocities which a few of the people on this list
have an account with.

I will not repeat it all again but do read the following
post and you will find it quite disturbing.

Quote>>>
Took a gander at Geocities TOS (terms of service). It would
appear that Geocities and Yahoo have
merged and that Yahoo has included the same statement
regarding uploaded
files, like great pics or literary works, in their TOS! Just
goes to show the
importance of reading the fine print I guess. I know one
server I'll never
upload anything to.

>From Section 8 of the TOS:
<>

The url to the TOS is
http://docs.yahoo.com/info/terms/
for any that would like to see for themselves.

I've also heard that other "free" servers are incorporating
the same sort of
thing into their own TOS. Does anyone know of any others
incorporating this
"we can steal your work if we want to" policy? I'm thinking
more and more
about getting my own domain and a "real" hosting service for
lack of a better
term. Hmmm, I smell research in the air...

Strange night.

Last night Between 10pm & early hours of this morning heavy rain, gale force
winds, with small trees, large branches, signs and garbage bins blown
everywhere.

Lighting and Thunder was also part of the scenario. Mitchells Island received
25mm between 10.45pm & 1am with the maximum wind gust there at 44km/h.

More open areas received stronger squally winds which swirled around from SE - S
- SW - W at different stages.

I thought that an ECL was developing.....was soooooo excited........but I woke
up this morning with blue skies and fresh SWers ...... damn......

This is incredibly important to those who have any
valuable material posted on "free servers". Under Australian
law, your copyright is protected (in theory) and enforced
under the Trade Practices and Copyright acts. I'm not sure
whether that is revoked if you are using "free services" to
publish material but you would be covered if the contract
for ISP services strictly protected your copyright whether
or not you paid. Please ensure this with your ISP ASAP.

I'm sure many people who have taken photos of tornados etc.
would be really annoyed if their pic found it's way into
someone else's publication from which they and not you
derived profit. You have no comeback under yahoo's and
presumably other ISP's bearing the above condition.

Okay, I'm going to sort of play the devil's advocate here. No question
that what this guy did was stupid, monumentally irresponsible, and
something that the ASWA could never condone.....

BUT,

My feeling is that this guy was basically after an adrenalin rush (not to
mention an ego boost). It wasn't storm chasing for him, it was an extreme
sport - a bit like base jumping, or street luge, or skydiving - basically
putting yourself in danger. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not condoning his
actions, just suggesting that in our increasingly 'chained to the computer'
lifestyles I'm sure we are going to see much more of this 'lifestyle based
risk taking behaviour' in the future....

Just my 0.02c worth....

Sure, it may have been stupid, but, wouldn't it have been a wonderous
experience to have been there. And also, speaking as a non-storm chase, I
find it hard to see much difference between what this fellow did and what
some of the more fanatical storm chasers get up to.

I agree totally Mark. When we were in Darwin with Thelma we went out driving in
the Cyclone against warnings - not because of stupidity but because none of us
had ever experienced something so powerful and amazing as what we
saw.......Standing on Darwin Harbour in 100 km/h plus winds was
awesome......feeling the wind almost pick you up off the ground because of how
strong it was.............having trouble just opening the car door!!

I think it is very judgmental to condemn this guy straight out.... education
would be a better way........maybe he didn't realise the ins & outs of chasing.
Judging people doesn't do anyone any good....

Hi all

Anthony and I went into the Severe Weather Section of the BoM today to meet
up with Jeff Callaghan and look at some photos of recent storms/tornadoes.
We were shown two photos of a tornado at Goondiwindi on May 1 this year -
the day of the chase after the ASWA meeting. Of course we didn't see any
tornadoes, just haildrifts. In one photo, the tornado looked a lot like
that Port Hedland tornado near their Met Office. The next of the tornado in
its mature phase had a solid cylindrical column.

We were also shown some awesome (I keep saying it!) photos of the Bucca F4
tornado which is shown on the front of the Aus Svr Storms Brochure. About 4
fairly good quality pics showing what can only be called a beast, which
levelled several brick houses and killed 25 cattle.

Probably the best was saved to last as we read through the report of the HP
Tornadic Supercell of Xmas Eve, 1989. A supercell formed on the border
Ranges spawning a tornado which slashed through forests. A met from the RFC
went to have a look and confirmed tornado damage. The storm then merged
with a line of storms and a very large constant bow echo as they approached
Brisbane. The main storm reintensified into a supercell over Brisbane and
Redcliffe was struck by an F1 tornado. Two other tornadic waterspouts
occurred in Moreton Bay which did not make land. Max wind gusts were at
least 100kn as one yacht's anemometer was stuck on 100kn after the tornado.
Unfortunately several people were seriously injured and a girl killed in
Moreton Bay when the boat she was in overturned.

Now...here's the even bigger news!!! At Redcliffe, radar indicated
cloudtops of about 57 000 feet, or ~17km (?). As the storm moved seaward,
cloudtops of 77 000 feet were observed by radar!!!!!!!!!!!! That would
indicate a cloudtop of ~23km!! I've heard of 21km before but this is
unbelievable. Anthony and I were sceptical to say the least, but Jeff
confirmed.

Got to go...I still can't believe it.

Regards
James Chambers

Hi everyone,

Jimmy has recently been posting a few reminders over the list re. the
ASWA annual general meeting / dinner /social night so as to get a rough
idea of the numbers. At the moment we have several possibilities for a
venue: which one we go for will depend on how many of you come along
(and what gets booked in the meantime).

At this stage could every 'definite' send a message to MY address ASAP
(and at the very latest by, say, next Wednesday 7/7) and I will pick a
venue based on that. If your still not sure mail me nonetheless as I'll
take it into consideration.

We're aiming to make it a lot more than a formal night and, to do that,
a big interstate or international [ Les:) ]contingent would be great.

So email.... quickly.... along with any ideas for other inclusions you
would like to see on the night.

cheers

David

Hi everyone,

The strange happenings over the northern parts of Australia continue. The
cloud band has brought some rain to the Barkly and Katherine regions of the
NT and small falls in the Kimberley. Temperatures are very low as well, with
Wyndham only getting to 21C by 3pm - record low max? This event follows some
very non-seasonal activity over the tropics for the last 5-6 weeks or so,
with showers and storms further south from the equator than usual during the
Dry season.

I have told a few people this on IRC but I thought you may like to know, and
I don't mean to blow my own trumpet in any way, that one of my photos has
made the short list (last 15) for the BoM calendar. I'm hoping at least one
other ASWA member has a photo still being considered too. I don't know which
photo as yet but I've seen photos from a lot of you that I consider to be
the equal or better than any of the onesI sent the BoM - just my opinion
:-)

Cya later and see you Vic members at the meeting tomorrow morning at 9am

Chris Gribben

Hey Ben from Brisbane here..

I remember the 1989 storm very clearly.. as it basically went straight
over my house.. it occurred on christmas eve of all times, and approx.
5pm in the afternoon.. houses in my block were badly damaged/had there
roofs taken off/almost destroyed.. we were lucky to get out of the whole
thing with only minor damage, including our front fence which we found
down the street.. The storm was followed by 4 hours + of EXTREME
electrical activity.. i'm talking deafening Cg's for hours and hours on
end.. to this day no storm i have been in has even come close to the
intensity of that night.. Redcliffe was a warzone the next day, with
barely a tree left untouched.. and from memory somewhere in the order or
1000 homes unroofed and 500 more damaged?

17km cloudtops make it a BEAST!! but 23km?! Surely that would be one of
the highest recorded in Australia, maybe even one of the highest in the
world?

Something I've never seen on the James Cook Uni satellite shot
(http://www.ece.jcu.edu.au/JCUMetSat/globeflast.gif)
..large areas of white (coldest cloud tops) well down in the Southern
Ocean and below New Zealand).
Seems extraordinary to me given that the current synoptic is pretty
ordinary looking in that part of the world..

Parts of Southland and Central Otago have been worst affected by the
northwesterlies, with gusts up to 150 km/h!. Consequently much damage in
places. The winds have eased back, and much colder southerlies have moved
in. Snow should be falling to 400 metres by now (maybe even lower - about 3
C in Queenstown at 7.00 PM).

Not so bad in Christchurch - just the occasional strong gust today, and
mild too, especially after the several days of hard frost we've just had.
But winter should be showing its other face tomorrow - rain with snow
lowering to about 400 metres; maybe some heavy falls of the latter inland.

Reminds me of a passage in 'Sled Driver' by Brian Shul (a book about the
SR-71 American spyplane that can cruise at around 85-90 thousand feet). In
the section about weather he says:

"...I often heard that some thunderstorms could build to 60,000 feet and
the SR-71 made me a believer. Walt and I watched in amazement as we
finally broke out into the clear at 72,000 one afternoon over the South
China Sea..."

I could tell you what they were doing there. But then I'd have to kill you.
