A chilly morning in Canberra this morning: -6C

Absolutely stunning day though - not a cloud in the sky
and warm sunshine streaming inside.

Howdy all.

12mm received last night from consistent light showers.

Today is a beaut day.........deep blue sunny skies with some stratocu around and
some building Cu off the coast.

One question for those Weather21 viewers, Mark Hardy or Michael Thompson - have
you ever seen a Jetstream like the one shown on Wednesday with the 2 splits and
the "dog leg" kink?

Was very interesting to see. Although we have had some rain, total for June is
still well below the monthy average - Im hoping that further falls "bumps" the
total up to the average.

Paul at Taree.

A split jet is often associated with a blocking pattern. That is a high
latitude "high" and a cut off "low" to the north. The northern split of the
jet supports the low and the southern leg supports the blocking high.

Thanx Mark....I knew that because you already described it on Weather21

What I was more interested in was the actual number of splits - in that there
were 2. I didn't realise that the Jet Stream meanders wherever it pleases.

So does upper systems control where the jet stream travels or is there another
influence on that?

Paul.

Does anyone know a similar program to Photoworks that can read files
with an .sfw extension? Photoworks isn't compatible with my video card.
I've got rolls of photos on disk that I can't read with this file
extension.

It has to be for win 3.1.

Shareware maybe?

Try looking up ImageMagick from the "E.I. du Pont De Nemours
and Company Incorporated. Their utility called "convert" may
well handle this format in later versions. Binaries are
available for a variety of O/S's and windowing systems but
in the light of your requirement, I don't hold out much hope
since Win95 was released in 1995 and it is 1999 with WIN2000
just released (or whatever).

secure loose items and stay indoors until the storms have passed. Driving
conditions in heavy rain will be hazardous.

This Thunderstorm Advice will be updated at 3:00 pm this afternoon.

Raining here now. Exactly the same patter as the last 5 days - morning rain,
clears to a mild sunny day then about 1.30pm the clouds forming over the sea
take wings and scream inland dumping moderate - heavy showers.

Hmm don't mind this pattern.........

Hi Les and other international people,

Sorry about the delay in getting back to you. I met with
the bank here and my request got them running around a
lot. Basically, I asked "what is the least expensive
way for someone overseas to deposit money into ASWA's
account".

The Easiest & Least Expensive:

When you come to Oz, pay us here in cash.

The Easiest & Least Expensive from anywhere:

Use your credit card in the 'net. Problem is, that is
not supported by the bank (yet). Also, our status as a
non-profit organisation prohibits ASWA from setting
up a Merchant Facility i.e. so ASWA can bill credit
cards. That's presently only available to businesses.
My request got them thinking about a new product
though.

The Next Most Expensive from UK:

Australian Dollar Money Order. Check with your bank
and/or Royal Post Office.

Westpac's Bank Option:

Westpac only has commercial banks in the UK. No retail
unfortunately. Their retail affilliate is LLoyds Bank
in London. They might be able to raise an Australian
Dollar Money Order. Forget telegraphic transfer, that
is too expensive.

Hi Michael,

The other option is simply a personal cheque. It costs $7 at
the Commonwealth Bank to get it processed, and can take up
to 21 days - but still relatively simple.

Thanks Chris. I was trying to consider only those options
which cost ASWA $0, then only the smallest fee if we had
lots of international members (credit card Tx) etc. Each
option has a different cost to the international sender
with Credit Card being almost nil, personal cheque (which
I discounted as it costs ASWA at least $7) being almost nil,
international money order (which costs differently according
to the agent), travellers cheque (which have minimums and
need an air-ticket) winding up with a telegraphic transfer
which might cost almost as much as the ASWA membership.

It might be a good idea for Les to check various options
with LLoyds and report back to us.

Below what line would you normally expect snow to fall to sea-level?. I
notice one set of models showing a thickness line of 522 reaching the lower
South Island tomorrow, and 534 crossing the central North Island on Sunday.
That same set shows the 540 thickness line crossing the southwest corner of
WA on Monday.

Fine and cool (around 7 degrees C) in Christchurch this evening, but a
thin layer of high cloud, plus a halo around the moon. That must be sign of
the approaching southerly blast due to hit early tomorrow. (Metservice
forecasts rain and snow to 500 metres in Canterbury for Saturday)

I must admit that I have not seen the jet stream pics this week, but splits
are good. A simple rule is convergence at the surface and divergence at top.
Apparently jet divergence aids lifting, hope I am not wading out of my depth
here. Perhaps somebody like Anthony or Paul Graham can fill us in on a more
scientific answer.

Hi all!

Has anyone checked out the AVN raw data site??? It now forecasts
CAPE!!!! This is what we've been waiting for AGES!!!! I have no idea
how accurate they are, as I've only just seen them myself. For those
who don't know the URL, it is:

http://sgi62.wwb.noaa.gov:8080/cgi-bin/disp_avn.sh?ctlfile=avn_06Z.ctl&ptype=map&var=LFTX&level=1000&nlevels=16&op1=none&op2=none&hour=06Z&day=7&month=jun&year=1999&proj=custom&lon0=140&dlon=20&lat0=-33&dlat=20&type=shaded&cint=def&white=def&plotsize=800x600&title=

Choose your dataset, and tick the box that says "variable and definition
units" and you'll see "CAPE" - click that, and then do the same as you
would for LI's (choose Australia) or use a lat/long

No more CAPE forecasts drawn by hand using skew-t's! Although it is
useful for determining cap strengths/heights
