Hey Ben from Brisbane here..

I have to apologise to Paul Mossman, he was actually right when he said
that the bet between the QLD and NSW premiers was for the whole series,
and not the game.. because the game was actually a draw, the NSW flag
will today be draped over Wally Lewis (I heard this morning that it was
going to be flown over ANZ stadium now instead, not sure about that
one), and on monday the QLD flag will fly on top of the Sydney Harbour
Bridge.. I've heard that the flag is pretty big :) knowing our luck
their wont be a breath of wind in Sydney for the next week, and no-one
will see it..

Dont worry Steve, I had the same problem the other day.

Strange weather continues. Taree reached 21 yesterday which I believe was the
State's top temp while also receiving 6.8mm in a heavy "storm shower" yesterday
arvo.

Current obs. here .........4/8 Cu around heavy showers last night (so heavy you
could hear them coming) resulted in 12mm taking it to a meagre 25mm for this
"rain" event for Mitchell's Island.

Still need heaps more to make average for this month. I hope it gets here.

Thankyou Ben for your apology.

Rgds,
Paul at Taree

Had 31mm at Kenmore yesterday, with some very heavy rain during the origin
There's still a fair amount of water laying around - probably can't soak
through the permafrost.....

Looks like June is another month with above average rainfall.
I've got all the rainfall figures from this and last year in Excel if
anyone wants them to compare totals etc.

We had 26.8mm all up here, which isn't bad - good for winter anyway!
Our total for June is 110.9mm so far, which is 50% higher then the June
average of 71mm.

There were some higher falls around...Cape Moreton received 90mm,
Enoggera received 105mm (? on this I would say...) The same with Imbil
that received 128mm. Cape Moreton undoubtedly received 90mm, (from
radar observations). There was a widespread range (that hugged the
coast) of 20-40mm, some falls even made it further inland, but the
Darling Downs all had falls 10mm or under.

How much did you get, John W?

Lightning tracker has had almost continuous lightning since midday on
Tuesday, however it never peaked very high (35 whites was the highest
from the Ballina storm)

Not bad for winter though! Another upper level trough + cold pool
should come through around late Sat/Sun - we should get some more
showers again, with a fair chance there'll be imbedded t'storms
(possibly more then what we had in the last two days, because we have a
moister airmass established over us now). MRF still has lots of
vorticity over us coming through...but I'd be happier if I could at
least see NGP vorticity!!! Did anyone ever get a reply back from FMNOC
on the NGP issue? I never did...

Hi All,

26mm of lovely Hydrogen monoxide in the guage for the 24 hrs to 9:00am this
morning. That's good rain for this location at this time of year.

John.

p.s., surely that wasn't 'queenslander...' that I heard in the distance
from you Anthony, last night when I went out to check out the rain???

Raining here now. Exactly the same patter as yesterday. Quite mild this morning
(even consider it warm...)

Strange day really...................

Great game last night by the way. Shows how even the teams were.

Interesting Steve,

We saw the most brilliant rainbow ever up here in Blackheath on Tuesday,
I think. We bumped into our neighbour on the way home from the shops (we
were walking) and she said she had never seen a rainbow like it and she
has lived here almost 20 years. You could see the whole arch and the
color was just amazingly vivid with the mirror version just above it.
Sadly, I didn't have my camera with me at the time. :-(

Hi all,

You might want to have a browse of the rainbows on our site to see if
anything similar is shown:

http://australiansevereweather.simplenet.com/photography/rainbo02.htm

Quite a flat rainbow appears in the 4 sequence shot at the bottom of page
one, with the nuclear explosion storm cloud. Check this one too for a small
funnel:

An unusual wintry one occurring in the last part of a cumulus which has
become virga (please excuse the poor focus, taken through a window with an
auto camera):

Ok,

I will try and have a cack at this. What I have seen before is similar and
will occur during the morning or evening period. This means that it takes a
certain angle with respect to your eye to get such a rainbow. These are not
common but nor rare. You would need the precipitation to be away from you
on the opposite side of the sun and at a certain angle to you. This then
means it will occur closer to the horizon. Other more tradional rainbows
will occur during the afternoon period and or morning period with the sun
higher in the sky.

Is this what happened?

If you want strange rainbows, try the night rainbow?? Yepp that's right
.... and I am not drunk. I once awoke around 3 to 4am to see a rainbow.
Thought I was dreaming, thought I saw a UFO which I didn't believe in? Then
I noticed the moon was in full but setting behind the house. There was also
a light shower that was occurring and clearing and the cloud breaking. This
explains it.

Believe me, the eyes are an important tool in meteorology and so you must
be alert and very observant.

Hi every1,

I can't shed any light on the 'strange rainbow' thread but I can say I saw
something this morning I've never seen before...

It was about 8.30 a.m. and in a moderate fog. I was actually peering at the
sun to see if I could 'spot' any sunspots (not recommeneded by the way...it
was still way too bright!) but couldn't see much.

As I pulled my car into the carpark facing away from the sun I noticed a
pale white (whiter and thicker than the fog - not just a tautology) bow
about 20 degrees above ground. There was no colour, just a whiter than
surrounding fog bow going from ground to ground at an indeterminate
distance. It persisted while I watched but eventually I had to go to class..

Any thoughts here?

Cheers,
Kevin from Wycheproof.

It might have been a false or 'mock' sun on the fog, like you get on
high cirrus clouds.

As an avid amateur astronomer I have seen many of these events during the
past years, the light coloured fog bow you saw was indeed a rainbow except
in fog so you could say it was a fogbow, as you would know fog is water
saturated air which is very similar to rain except finer. The lack of
colour in the bow would suggest that it was fairly low and therefore the
sun was in the thicker part of the atmosphere. As the atmosphere thickens
less colour is refracted inside rain and fog. Now going from ground to
ground, cant say what that is, were you inside your car at the time?

Hi Steve and all,

Some info from a great weather book I have. A rainbow forms it's greatest arc
when the sun is close to the horizon. The higher the sun, the flatter the
rainbow will be, until the sun rises higher than 42 above the horizon, when it
disappears altogether.

I have also seen a few fogbows in the last few years, a couple of them from
airplanes, where I saw one as a full circle! I have a photo of a fogbow, but it
is not in an album, so it's sitting in one of a kazillion packets of rejected
photos that didn't make it into the albums! Not sure why this is so with this
photo! If anyone's dreadfully keen, I can attempt the brave mission to retrieve
it. Though, knowing me, I'll probably end up doing that anyway, now that my
curiosity is sparked. Rest assured that I shan't sleep until my quest is
complete!

I've crapped on enough.

Marty.
