And on that note, how about we leave this debate to the other newsgroups
where it has, is, and always will be thrashed out to death. :)

There was an interesting liftout (called the "Winter Survival Guide") in
yesterdays (Friday's) West Australian newspaper, which includes a page on
severe storms. It has an article on the storms we get around Perth and
saying what we should do to prepare for the storm season (which is just
starting in SW WA), what to do during and after severe storms and stating
what household emergency items we should have.

Its great that the media does these type of things, because the more people
that are prepared for severe storms the better.

Hi Jimmy here

Obviously, you send your copy first and then if prompted send the original
through the FedExpress and state that you need it back ASAP I suppose it
is a matter of trust in this game. They can run with your tape!! What do
you do, chase all over the world for it?

Sometimes though it takes a while for them to respond with tapes. This is
show biz. I have sent five sample tapes around the world and only received
two tapes back!!!! It took 2 days to get the five tapes taped as they are
so I am only going to make copies of the ones I have for future sending out
to others. Too much hassle

James, is this SOI result related with serious events near Brisbane and
along the coast, or throughout Queensland.

I am interested in this as you would expect that assuming that the La Nina
would take moisture more inland meeting the drier air there rather than
during the dought like conditions when the direr air meets the moist
coastal air. I know this is generally speaking but this is my theory why
this season was bad for Sydney as well as bad timing... (trough lines

Hi Jimmy here,

As you would have expected with my favourite situation of a north south
line cold frontal trough situation Check out the LI and you will be
surprised to see an expected region of -4. Would have to check out the
available moisture but I am hopefull this extends across. Just watch it as
it gets updated...

After people kept bugging me to get the roll of film in my camera developed
after i saw the funnel yesterday (you know who you all are :)
i gave in and im glad i did!!! the photos are up on my web site, along with
photos of the 27 april storms in sydney (2 weeks after the supercell) and a
photo of a magnificent sunset.

http://www.braenet.com.au/~disarm

Thats my page, click on "1999" on the side and look for the 3 articles with
"NEW" besides them, they all have new photos.
All photos are slightly darker than the originals due to the scanner i
have, but that is a very minor thing.

Anyway tell me what you think :)

I have finally organised the dates for the NSW ASWA meetings for the next
two months.

The June meeting will be 26th June 1999.

The all important July ASWA Annual General Meeting will be held on the 31st
July 1999. Although anyone is invited to attend any meetings, this is the
first Annual General meeting where the committee will be voted in for the
coming year. We already have interest for members from Victoria and is
planning to Michael Bath is come along.

So keep these dates in your diaries. Don't say I never told you...

If you have any queries, please don't hesitate to ask.

While the subject is on meetings.

A list of all the ASWA meeting minutes is now available to
the members at
http://www.severeweather.asn.au/members/membersarena/
It lists them all so anyone with access to and a member of
ASWA can view them.

Meeting minutes are no longer going to be posted to this
list (though notification of updates may be). So if you want
to read about the history of ASWA and what was covered in
the meetings in one place. They are there.

Enjoy.

G'day Jimmy, and everyone

As the title suggests, it was a study of especially severe t'storms in the
Greater Brisbane area, including Redcliffe and Ipswich. Nowhere else in
Qld.

Btw, its raining lightly here: 36mm since last night to now.

James

Hi all!

A very successful meeting here in QLD today, with a nice turn out and
some absolutely excellent ideas raised.

One of these that were brought up...were possible ideas for fund
raising. The suggestion that ASWA could set up temporary "booths" at
shopping centres, selling items (such as posters) to help raise money.

Basically...everyone has seen those little stalls/booths in shopping
centres that are sometimes set up. The idea is we could have a
stall/booth in some of the shopping centres, were we can sell posters
(ASWA members could donate their good photographs to be blown up to
poster size, and then these can be sold to help raise money for ASWA)
Lightning/spectacular storm photo's are often extremely popular the
public...even the public acknowledges a spectacular photo! Within the
many members of ASWA, I'm sure we could set up a nice display...gust
fronts, tornadoes, lightning, sunsets...you name it!

We could hold a small "display" selling some of these...and of course,
the advantages of fund raising are only part of this. Other positive
outcomes of this include:

- Public exposure of ASWA - people will start to know we're 'out there,'
people will begin to take note of the name 'ASWA' - this will be
particularly useful in the near future.
- People are bound to ask questions, we can distribute information and
brochures, as well as help with the education of the public!
- Free "advertising" for ASWA - we can get extra members, there's many
people who are interested in weather, we just have to reach them! This
is a form of "free advertising" - as most shopping centres will allow
you to set these up for free if you're a non-profit organisation

Such stalls could be set up on Saturday's at major shopping centres...I
personally believe this is an excellent idea, and has lots of
potential...I'd appreciate other people's ideas/suggestions/input on
this!

Hi All,

Finally a message from the quiet one on the North Coast!

Some nice rainfall totals the past 48 hours or so. To 9am 4/6 26.4mm and to
9am today 53.0mm (79 at Alstonville just a few ks to the E) most falling
in mod-heavy showers with light rain periods or dry in between. Some
offshore Cbs, with some large cu drifting in, but no thunder or lightning
observed.

I attended the Brisbane meeting today, a fairly long drive but well worth
the trip. It was great to put faces to the names/nicks/emails ! The meeting
was excellent and great to be part of. I will definetly be attending more
of these. Rain was a feature of the day with heavy falls around the far
north coast up to about Murwillumbah, then mostly dry till Brisbane but
with heavy showers threatening along the coast. The rain soon moved in
while at the meeting and some moderate falls occurrred during the
afternoon. Rain persisted from Brisbane to the border on the way home, with
drizzle patches and isolated showers back to home. One torrential downpour
at Ocean Shores was interesting!

cheers, Michael

Just a thought...

Where do most folk imagine the Central Tablelands to be?

Here in Blackheath, we have cool to mild as the forecast, that is, for
the Cent. Tablelands but its 8 degrees here at 1pm Friday and was
similar yesterday. Seems like that fits in more with a little further
south. Any thoughts?

The topic of Community Service Announcements was discussed at the Victorian
meeting this morning, and has prompted some furtherthinking on my part.
Points were raised which I feel merit further discussion by members of the
aussie-weather list.

Giving advice is certainly meritorious, but as such, it must be without
dispute. For example, covering an adult with a mattress may be advised, but
a child might suffocate in the same circumstances if not closely supervised.
Keep in mind that people may take advice without giving it any extra
thought. I'd hate to find ASWA in court because of a piece of 'advice' we'd
given in good faith.

ASWA needs to be positioned so that we are seen to be working in conjunction
both with the BoM and the SES. I understand that we have to be seen as
assisting the community for this to work, but we are trying to promote ASWA
& what it is, not replace either organisation.

Why not something like..............
VOICE 1
A message from ASWA, the Australian Severe Weather Association.

VOICE2
On average, each year severe storms are responsible for more damage than
tropical cyclones, earthquakes, floods or bushfires.

ASWA was created to provide for discussion of & education about the weather
that effects us in Australia. If you would like to understand more about
severe weather in your state, and be put in touch with people who can advise
you further, contact your state rep by visiting the ASWA website at
www.severeweather.asn.au.

My thoughts only...........................
