Hi Glenda,

Welcome to the list. Growing plants (both exotic & native rainforest
species) is my other major hobby. I am caught between a rock & a hard
place - I love severe storms but I hate the damage they do to my
plants/trees (sigh).

Can't say that I have ever really observed plants react specifically before
a significant weather event, only afterwards due to the effects... rain,
drought or damage, etc.. Animals are somewhat of a different story. We
can get a lot of frogs at Mt. Crosby, but curiously they always seem to
show up just before or at the beginning of a protracted rainy period. And
they don't show up at all if it is just a one day event or an isolated
storm. We have this one monster green tree frog (Litoria caerulea, length
120mm and id by old skin damage patch above right eye), which makes
irregular appearances. Just happens that it turned up in the middle of the
driveway just in front of the garage tonight (almost squashed it), first
time I have seen him/her in around 2 months, and even though there has been
no rain since last week. But guess what, the BoM has showers forecast for
the next 5 days or so...

Hello to everyone - I've just subscribed to this list and hope to learn
from
it all. The weather fascinates and never ceases to interest me. One
aspect
I follow closely (and recently published a book on) is the way animal/plant
life react or behave prior to changes in the weather. Anyone else
interested in this?

Hey Ben from Brisbane here..

Actually, just last week i caught a show on Channel nine (not sure what
it was) that had a segment dealing with animals and weather.. a few
things from memory were..

If a horse sticks it neck out and sniffs the air.. it's going to rain
very soon..

When a cow tries to scratch its ear, their is a shower near (this one
was a crackup)..

And if a cow thumps its hoofs on the ground it means their is hail or
lightning close by?!?

Their were heaps of them, but they seemed the most believable ones (best
of a bad bunch?).. My dad also says that if their are heaps of ants
around gathering food then it's going to rain heavily in the next few
days.. this one is about the only one i could actually believe in, as it
has proved itself a few times.. or maybe just a coincidence..

Hey Ben from Brisbane here..

Well.. the models are interesting for us once again, looks like we could
be in for some rain/showers Wednesday and possibly continuing through
Thursday.. Although the models have been all over the place the last few
weeks to say the least, most if not all models have a trough forming of
the QLD coast overnight/tomorrow, and AVN has quite a bit of action
coming up for us with very nice VV's and certainly enough moisture for
rain, if not rain certainly some heavy coastal showers.. NGP does
something similar to AVN.. most models have a weak upper level trough
over eastern districts overnight wednesday through to about thursday.. I
wont go into what the different variables are doing as i'm sure those
who are interested will check it out themselves..

Hi Glenda,

How animals behave before certain weather events has always interested
me. Mainly due to the fact my cats always go "frisky" a day or so
before a good storm, although not all the times they're frisky, there's
a good storm, but whenever there's a good storm - you can bet they were
frisky! On the day of the Oct 13 supercell, when I came back, I found
the dining room chair knocked over, tablecloth off the table, and one of
them was sitting on the meals table - the other on the kitchen bench!!
The day before this, they were running around the house. This happened
for the March 3 t'storm, and also for the Nov 18 storm (I'm 99% sure...)
there have been many other events previously too. There certainly
appears to be substantial evidence, that they (animals) know something
we don't!

On another note, welcome to the list! Great to have you with us, and I
hope you can learn more - I think you'll find that most of us (if not
all) are still learning about different aspects of weather.

Hi all,

Anyone game enough (no pun intended!) to make a forecast for the first
State of Origin game (in Brisbane) next week (Wednesday)? (Yes I know,
chaos!)

*If* you could extrapolate off 144hr NGP (which you can't really!) It
should be fine...but there's a 1% chance that'll be accurate!

Some one had to bring this one up eventually :-)

QUEENSLANDER QUEENSLANDER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't archive the bulletin, per se, but did run a quick job this
morning to extract the max/min temperatures from NSW from Sunday. To
make sense of this you'll need a list of station numbers - available
via http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/.

Kevin,

There are Cb's forming out here. Some of them i think are diffused anvils, but seem to be building up again. The suns out here at the moment, but towards the south, things look good. On the radar it's showing not much, but a nice looking cell down around the Hamilton area again.

Paul.

Hi Andrew -- I'll email you my NSW obs listing for 9am Sunday. Note
that rainfall, max and min temperatures as well as 9am and 3pm simple
observations are available for all Australia at
http://www.bom.gov.au/silo/ProductIndex.html -- follow the obvious
links and then look for the Data link -- the remaining links are to
maps. There is an archive of about 2 weeks here.

Cheers

Looks interesting in Perth for tonight and tomorrow, we have a cold front
and an approaching low, which is likely to give us moderate to heavy falls,
with thunderstorms and squalls possible.

1011.4 hPa.

PERTH AND METROPOLITAN:
A few showers tonight. Showery periods tomorrow. Risk of a
thunderstorm with squalls overnight and tomorrow.
NE/NW winds, slowly freshening and tending NW'ly tomorrow.

FORECAST TEMPERATURES:
TODAY'S MAX: 26
TOMORROW'S MIN: 14 MAX: 22

Hey all,

I remember a little while ago the thought of a group of us heading over to the US next chase season. Can anyone send me some info on it as then I weren't interested, but am now seriously considering it.

Paul -

I emailed the list to see if there was anyone interested in chasing
May/June Next year.

We had some airfare quotes with the best being JAL at $1770 return to Texas
(if I remember).

Im still serious about it. A group would be better. I was hoping to hook up
with some chasers over there. Sam Barricklow - have you any contacts?

Regards.

Keep us up to date, Jacob, it certainly looks like an interesting situation

Hi Jimmy here,

I would suggest you try at a universities such as Monash University. You may
also try the Geelong Weather Service if there is some opportunity there.
Sorry

Hi Paul!

Yeah, I've been watching a giant glaciated anvil or two to my WSW for about
two hours now...unfortunately nothing seems to be happening underneath
them....:((

Nice overshooting tops about 4 o'oclock but I'd imagine the freezing level
is pretty low today...

I was wondering whether the diurnal temperature changes are
included and subsequently predicted when models like MRF,
GASP, NOGAPS etc produce thickness plots at 00Z and 12Z.

00Z is 10am EST and 12Z is 10pm. The temperature, particularly
near the ground, is often vastly different at these times which
ought to result in very different thickness plots depending upon
the hour of the day or night.

Comments please?

Thanks.

Hi Kelly

Lindsay Smail from Geelong Weather Services here. I know you've been
looking for a work experience place but I don't think I can help you
personally because this is a relatively small business which only operates
several hours a day, doing (among other things)reports and forecasts for
businesses and media in Geelong. If you are based in Melbourne I think
there would be a bit of a problem.
Regards and good luck, Lindsay.

Your minimums would kill ours normally, we rarely get more than say -3
but it does get colder than that in various hollows I'd say. Still,
we've had a few nice single figure maximums lately, something that few
places experience outside of the Alps, I imagine.

I know this isn't directly related to weather but I need help and it was
for aussue-weather that I obtained this software to make my snow photos
available to everyone etc.

I installed Photoworks for windows 3.1 and it has stuffed up my
graphics/ colours etc. I'm operating on very limited colour just now,
very frustrating. Now and then, when I change back to a vga driver with
say 16 colors then back to my S3 driver everything returns to normal but
when I turn the computer off for more than a minute or so, it reverts
back to strange colours. National Photos finally remembered after
sending me the software that it wasn't compatible with "One S3 driver"
and that appears to be mine. Any help would be appreciated, and I will
return the favour somehow.Maybe email privately eh?

Ta,

Lindsay Pearce

Has anyone else had experience with this software, good or bad?

Hi all,

Well it has finally happened, Adelaide has had a storm (2 actually). At
12:00pm on my lunch break at work I noticed a very nice Cb approaching from
the NNE, it was heading to the SSE. It had a very nice shaped anvil, which
when it was closer I noticed it was fibrous. unfortunately it didn't
develop much and all that was seen from that cloud was a bit of virga. It
was 12:45pm by the time it had passed over.

At 3:15pm I went outside again, this time I was working, and noticed a very
dark and very high base coming towards me, it was coming from the NE and
heading SSE, a definate line of precipitation was behind it. While I was
watching this a flash of lightning appeared, and about 10 or so seconds
later a faint rumble occured. This was the only activity I noticed. After
about 5 minutes of watching it started to lightly rain, then it got
heavier, and heavier. Then it stopped. So I kissed that one good bye.

As I write this email we have storms heading towards the east, the
lightning activity is about 1 or 2 minutes between strikes, so I guess it
isnt much, but considering we have gone with out storms for some months now
it makes a change from clear blue skies..

Hi Andrew!

Yeah, it was a wierd day wasn't it? Quite lovely actually, with all that
castellanus and waste anvils. Pity the storms fell apart as soon as they
begun. Here at St Peters we didn't get a drop, but I still photographed a
nice precip cascade and some base features.

Did you check the radar? Did anyone get a decent fall?

Must have been one of the warmest May days for some time too....
