Ben,
I can confirm snow in the areas north of the ACT border on the morning of 22
November 1996, as I was driving though it. Snow lay in good-sized patches
alongside Lake George but thinned out the closer we got to Canberra. By the
time we crossed the border, the snow had stopped and there was no evidence
of snow having fallen in the city. Snow also fell at Sutton that day. Both
Sutton and Gundaroo are slightly higher in altitude than Canberra itself.
This is my first contribution to the list so here's a brief introduction.
My name's Rob Lord and I reside in Charlestown (Lake Macquarie). I've had an
fascination with severe weather since childhood. Did the backyard weather
station thing as a kid etc, but little time now to do much more than check
out the good storms and dabble in a bit of storm and lightning photography.
I have an excellent southward vantage point from my house although the
telegraph pole drives me insane (see storm photo attached). Will keep you
informed of weather events in Lake Macquarie.

Rob Lord
PS. By the way, photo taken 4.3.99 late afternoon with digital camera.
Received jaffa-sized hail and heavy rain.

Hello everyone--thanks for all the emails re: the ASWA vantage point
database, for those of you who haven't done 'em--now is your chance!!

I am just wondering who if anyone are taking care of the vantage points in
the states-I have spoken to a few people on #weather who said they were
doing but in my haste--I have forgotten--If they can email me or of anyone
can tell me that'd be great.
I am just seeing how many they've got and if they've had any requests/or
ideas on how everyone wants this thing put together.
Currently-1 page for the site with map and details A5 in size
Webpage has yet to be deciphered

Anyway have a good day

The next Sydney ASWA meeting will be held this Sunday 9th May commencing at
10am. I know this is Mothers Day, but no-one has replied to my earlier
email about this, so I assume everyone is still coming??? Venue is the 2KY
building in Wentworth street commencing at 10am. Parking is available
opposite the building for $5, or the train station is just across the road.

Please email me your agenda items to the address below, not to the list. I
will send another message later in the week with items received.

Some of the agenda items will include:

- membership applications, please bring your money!
- Sydney BoM
- Sydney Hailstorm discussion

Yes, snow fell very close to Canberra, but not in Canberra itself
(at least not at the airport). I'm not sure why Gundaroo (which, as
you say, is at a fairly similar elevation to Canberra, at least its
more elevated suburbs) got so much when Canberra itself missed out
- occasionally in a SW outbreak areas north of Canberra get snow when
Canberra is in the rainshadow of the Brindabellas, but I wouldn't
have thought Gundaroo was far enough north to miss the rainshadow
if that was what was happening.

I remember this event well - if only for the frequency of hail showers
hammering against the window of the restaurant where the Melbourne
AMOS Centre's annual dinner was taking place!

I know the ones that Keith refers to. Try:

http://www.BoM.GOV.AU/bmrc/medr/graphics/gasp

where the images are respectively:

mslp.0.gif
mslp.1.gif
mslp.2.gif
mslp.3.gif
mslp.4.gif
mslp.5.gif
mslp.6.gif
mslp.7.gif

These havn't been update since 23UTC on 20/04/1999. This status
hasn't changed today, In addition, the 'net is undergoing some sort
of seisure at the moment (11:15am AEST) - timeouts everywhere:-(

True that BOM gopher has yeilded up-to-date GASP charts out to
72hr. Try:

gopher://gilgamesh.ho.BoM.GOV.AU:70/I9/Australian%20Weather%20Information/Weather%20Charts

where the images are respectively:

msl_00laps
msl_24laps
3_day_prog

Perhaps Laurier can reveal the URL of other "free" BoM sources of
GASP charts:-)

As for NPMOC satpics, I've found the service to NPMOC lately to
be subject to execessive timeouts, particularly between the hours
of 9 and 14 UTC. Perhaps they've changed O/S's to NT as well:-)

NPMOC keep no archive of gmsc and gmsd that I've found, so their
URL remains at:

http://www.npmoc.navy.mil/satimages/gmsc.jpg
http://www.npmoc.navy.mil/satimages/gmsd.jpg

However, through the jtwc product line, I've found both the most
recent global IR satpic at:

http://www.npmoc.navy.mil/products/jtwc/GMSFull_ir2.jpg

and a simultaneously-maintained archive at:

http://www.npmoc.navy.mil/products/jtwc/archive/g5iwp

A program runs through my archive and pulls out all the corrupted
files and produces an exception report. I manually probe the
NPMOC archive later for the missing image(s). At present, this
is a manual process limited to a "cut ans paste" operation. When
I get really keen, I'll design a program to simply mirror the
archive. I can't use "mirror" as it doesn't work through a proxy,
so I need to design a more customised solution.

Hi Dann

I finally got around to getting you a couple of vantage points from WA.
I havent done much chasing yet so really only have a couple from close
to the city and one to the north.

1. Gooseberry hill lookout (UBD Map Ref: 273 F9)

How to get there:
Turn left onto Gooseberry Hill Rd off Kalamunda Rd. Turn left at the
very end of that road. Lookout is about 2-3 km down the road.

Pros:
- the lookout provides an excellent view across the city.
- the view range is from roughly SW around to NNW.
- Easy to get to, not very well known so is usually pretty quiet and
good for photographing from

Cons:
- There is no view at all to the east as the lookout is on the edge of
the scarp.
- City lights can make night photography hard
- as it is on the edge of the scarp it is a bad position for a lightning
strike. It is not safe to be here when the storm passes over
- If there is other traffic around, cars usally leave high beam lights
on at night as they drive past. This causes problems while taking night
photo's

Summary:

In general this is a good place to watch the storms as they approach but
once they are starting to get close it is time to move on. You ned to
leave quite a while before the storm gets to you as there is no exit
road to the east. You have to head west taking you towards the storms
before you can head back to the east.

2. Lesmurdie Falls (UBD Map Ref: 292 Q15)

How to get there:
Turn left onto Welshpool rd from Tonkin Hwy. Turn left off Welshpool rd
onto Lesmurdie Rd. Thsi turn is about 4-5 km from the turn onto
Welshpool rd. Follow Lesmurdie Rd for about 2-3 km and turn left onto
Falls Rd. Careful, it is very easy to miss this in the dark. The lookout
is about 200-300 past the falls carpark. You can park your car on the
side of the road as there is very little traffic if any at night. During
the day, use the falls carpark.

Pros:
- Very broad view of the city
- View range from SSW to N
- Storms can be seen up to 100km+ from here

Cons:
- Powerlines across view, you can move further down the road to get them
out of view but you lose some view to the south in doing so.
- lookout is on the edge of the scarp so there is a danger of lightning
strikes when storm passes over.
- There is a few street lights on this road so they can cause problems
sometimes
- limited view to the east
- no view to the south
- To stay ahead of the storm you need to leave about 20-30 mins before
the storm gets to you. Tonkin Hwy is the best way to stay ahead of the
storm and it takes time to get there

Summary:
Good vantage point if the storms are slow moving. Once they start moving
quick you dont have enough time to stay there and take photo's. Be aware
that traffic on Welshpool road my be busy on a work day. Be sure to
leave about 20-30 mins before the storm gets to you if you intend to
continue chasing it.

3. Wanneroo Rd

How to get there:
This one is easy to get too. Simply follow Wanneroo Rd north until you
are approx 40-50 km south of Lancelin. There is a big open field on both
sides of the road. Park wherever you want. (except in the middle of the
road hehe)

Pros:
- excellent view in all directions
- plenty of room to park on the side of the road

Cons:
- This is the only vantage point between here and Perth.
- no road network to chase if the storm is heading inland
- car lights at night can be a problem
- fields are fenced so you cant wander out over them

Summary:
This is an excellent vantage point if the storms are developing far
enough north. This is really a vantage point only as once you are here
you cant really chase a storm unless it is heading south as there is no
roads neading east from here.

There ya go Dann. That should keep you busy for a while :-)

Hey Ben from Brisbane here..

Check out these pages, HEAPS of links to BOM products here..

Allot of these links are for Climate Averages, but some good stuff at the
top, and down the bottom:

http://www.bom.gov.au/auto_index.shtml

This is the BMRC (Bureau of Meteorology Research Centre) - If you click on
one of the Research groups, and then on "Experimental Results" you get a
list of the products available for that group..

http://www.bom.gov.au/bmrc/index.htm

Also, can anyone offer an explanation for the Pseudo Images available on
the link below? obviously it has something to do with the ozone layer, but
i'm not 100% sure what they are ecactly..

Hi all,

I was going to wait until I had the pics developed for this, but due to
popular demand - I decided that I'd put a quick draft of the report up
to give people an idea of what happened! I hope to get some
pics/radar/short model analysis up by next week-end.

For the previous week, the models had been forecasting a very intense
upper level trough, and cold pool of air above SE QLD. So intense and
cold, that in fact, severe thunderstorms developed over some parts in
May! This is a fairly significant event, in the fact that SE QLD
thunderstorms generally need days of high temperatures, high DP's and
low pressures. And certainly, 23C, DP of 12C and 1020hPa does not
classify into any of these. However, today was certainly a day that
proved that weather has no restricted boundaries, and certainly does not
follow any unbreakable universal laws.

The day before (Friday, April 30th) there were some storms that formed
in NW NSW during the evening. This was certainly encouraging to see, as
it helped outline the cold pool's potential of thunderstorms. These
thunderstorms continued out through the night and moved fairly rapidly
eastwards, before weakening into showers. However, that morning
(Saturday May 1st) there were some small storms that formed near Moree,
that had pink on radar between 5:50am and 6:30am, and it was only 14C in
Moree at that time! Unfortunately, these thunderstorms dissipated into
showers, however the satellite pictures still showed plenty of
potential. Not to mention the forecasted cold air, at 06Z, Brisbane was
forecasted to be -21C at 500mb, air that cold usually lies at 45S! Just
after 6am though, I spotted some very welcome Altocumulus Castellatus,
despite the fact that it was not there for very long, it was still
welcoming. During the QLD ASWA meeting, we made periodic examinations
of the sky, at 11am, it certainly was not looking very hopeful, however
the cold air wasn't forecasted until the afternoon, and certainly, with
the combination of low temperatures and DP's, the air would need to be
at its coldest before any decent convection could occur. From midday
until 1pm, the sky began to improve dramatically, very soon towers begun
to spring up everywhere, and energex lightning tracker showed some
lightning about 300km W of Brisbane, and radar observations showed weak
t'storms beginning to form about 80km W of Brisbane. We also noticed a
severe thunderstorm advice for the SE QLD district, this was certainly
very encouraging to see! We left soon after 1pm to chase, we had to
pick up some extra film first though. After this we set out for the
Warrego Highway to head west.

We could see some low topped storms to the west, with very long anvils,
streaming from the NW. This wasn't surprising given the 150knot
jetstream above, although the t'storms wouldn't have reached this, they
would have still experienced a 100knot + jetstream, which is certainly
significant. The entire situation was difficult to put into
perspective, thunderstorms in SE QLD at this time of year are extremely
rare, and generally only consist of thundery showers that come
offshore. However, here we were, in 24C temperatures, and dry air
watching fresh new updrafts poke up through the storm. The anvil,
although rather fibrous was very dark though, and looked like "cold air"
had caused them. The cells appeared to be moving very slowly, and this
was confirmed by a radar report from Ross, who told us they were moving
very slowly ENE. We deviated off the highway, and onto a smaller road
to travel north for a kilometer to get a better view of the
thunderstorm. We eventually found ourselves underneath a very
impressive curved outflow band of the thunderstorm. We were watching a
very nice precipitation free base on the NW side of the storm with hope,
however apart from a slow moving, yet obvious inflow band, it was
relatively unexciting. It was very cold where we were, the temperature
would have been around 18-19C, and this was the first storm chase I had
ever been on where I was shivering! We soon had to move out of the area
due to rain, we traveled a little further east on one of the side roads
and observed a very strong rainfoot beginning to develop. It was only
short lived, but the precipitation curtain was very thick and solid, and
the rain-foot was very well defined. Unfortunately, by the time we
could find a suitable place to pull over, the rain-foot became less
pronounced. With no more suitable roads to the east, we were forced to
quickly head back for the highway and to head east to have another look
at the storm. We sat there for a few minutes, however soon it began to
rain again, so we had to find another place to observe the storm from.
However, 3cm splats on the windscreen from raindrops (while stationary!)
worried us about the possibility of hail. Hail was already probable in
any thunderstorms that formed (regardless of height) because of the fact
that the air was so cold above us, because of this, we made a quick dash
to the nearby service station that we noticed. We had to drive towards
the storm though to get there, and although the rain was not very
intense, the drops while driving were huge, and reduced visibility
greatly. Fortunately, we soon came to the service station and pulled in
for temporary shelter. At this stage, winds were gusting to 20 knots,
and the rain was still fairly heavy. We were waiting for hail, it was
allowed to hail now that we had got the car under shelter! Of course,
mother nature was not so obliging, and we only ever had heavy rain. The
rain was never very intense, however the large drops of rain made up for
this greatly, and still caused a large amount of water washing down the
road across the highway. Winds continued to get stronger, gusting to
25knots at times, sitting on about 20knots sustained, rain was nicely
almost horizontal at times, we were standing at the corner of the
service station, we couldn't even poke our heads around the corner, as
the wind was blowing the rain under the eaves, and we were getting
soaked! We could see the shrubs and bushes being blown madly in the
wind, and a nice mist was being whipped up on the road. Winds continued
to get stronger, and my estimate would be between 30-33kn gusts, with
22kn sustained. Certainly, it was a nice thunderstorm, however it was
not severe. There was heavier rain coming, and we knew the thunderstorm
was moving slowly, if we were to stay where we were, we'd have been
stuck for another thirty minutes. Spotting a small break in the
thunderstorm, we decided to try and get out of the position we were in.
We had thought that the worse of the storm had moved to the north of the
highway, however we may have slightly misjudged this. We noticed some
very nice little hail drifts on the side of the road, and that kept us
alert to the possibility of hail. Rain was only moderate at this stage,
however sure enough, we heard the dreaded loud "clonk" on the car roof!
We slowed down when we heard this, and continued slowly, the hail was
only relatively small (pea to marble size) at this stage. However, when
we observed cars pulled over with tarpaulins and blankets over them, we
thought "oh f___" and quickly pulled over! Fortunately for the car,
there was only infrequent hail, and it did not appear to ever be larger
than marble hail. After most of the hail had cleared, we continued
again, however a little further up the highway there were some nice hail
drifts again! Not being able to resist looking at all the hail, we
turned north onto a road that appeared to be covered in hail, it looked
like snow at times! Along the side of the road, there were some nice
hail drifts, this also blocked some of the water. As we drove over some
of the puddles, you could hear the hail underneath bouncing and hitting
the car! We quickly took some more pictures of the hail, before setting
off further east to catch up with the storm. Fortunately, it was still
only moving relatively slowly. We were in between two storms, and was
wondering which one we should chase after, the one to our approximate
south seemed much larger then the one to our approximate north.
However, a call from Chris who told us that although the cell to our
north was small, it had maximum intensity for the past hour quickly
helped assist us in that decision! And it was well worth it, it had a
VERY nice rounded base, it looked awesome!!! However it was difficult
to tell if there was rotation in it, if you looked at it one way, it
appeared to have rotation, then if you looked at it from another angle,
it didn't appear to have any. This cell, however was going to move into
a horrible area for chasing, full of hills and trees, however we spotted
some excellent mammatus and could not resist continuing to chase this
cell. There was some very nice CG's and CC's in the storm, a few of the
CC's were pink, there was also a nice crawler! Certainly, this storm
was still worth it. However, it was now 5:30pm and was getting dark, so
we thought we'd still try and follow it north to get a nice advantage
point for some lightning. At around 6pm, Chris rang again and informed
us that the storm we were chasing had sparked a severe thunderstorm
warning for the sunshine coast. We thought we'd try and get on top of
the ranges to a good look out point, there was some absolutely blinding
CG's! And at times, the rain was still quite heavy, and the added
combination of fog and mountainous, windy roads certainly didn't make it
the ideal situation to be in. Unfortunately, this meant that we had to
drive very slowly, and by the time we got over the range, we never found
a look out point, and the storms had moved further north. At this
point, we decided that we should call off the chase, as we couldn't spot
too much more lightning as it had appeared to die down a bit.

Considering it is May, this was certainly an excellent chase, I had
never expected anything like this to ever happen in May! I'm not
complaining though.

I think we should think about making ourselves known to the media and SES.
Also we might want to think about school visits.

A guest speaker from the BOm like the VIC guys did would also be nice.

Great idea Jane,

I think the mug shots etc., should all be transferred to the ASWA site and
stored under the Vic branch area. I think it would be great if registered
ASWA members for all states were done likewise.

Hi Anthony, James, Jo and other QLD ASWA members

I noticed on the 9 news at 6:30pm Sat, that Woodridge had received quite a
quantity (that word 'freak' was used!!) of pea sized hail at around 1:30pm.
That would have been the small multicell that we watched develop over an
hour or so from just a puff of Cu from the balcony outside the meeting
place. I noticed on the lightning tracker that it started generating
lightning echoes shortly after the guys took off on the storm chase. My
last Ob on this cluster had it dissipating off the Gold Coast around
3:00pm.

At Mt. Crosby there appeared to be a reasonably active cell approaching
slowly from the West up to around 5:15pm, when it began to dissipate at
approx 15km distance (damn damn) . I did get a hopefully reasonable mama
photo from the anvil around 5:00. A new cell formed to the North at 5:30
with truely spectacular Anvil growth when the updraft reached the
jetstream. This cell seemed to be over the Mt. Nebo area and from radar
/lightning tracker was the southern tip of a small line which then migrated
slowly towards the Sunshine Coast.

Regards,

>snip Just a quick email to say we encountered some very nice t'storms
(especially for May!!) we had some hail (yes Jimmy!!) only pea-marble
size (sorry Jimmy!) but there were hail drifts on the side of the road
(woohoo Jimmy!) and there certainly no lack of it in certain areas.
However, it was very localised...several other highlights/exciting
'things' - report + pics will be out soon hopefully.

Anthony Cornelius

Hi every1,

Geez I'm getting sick of reading about the wonderful May storms of Qld/NSW!!
(j/k)

It's been so dull here in Victoria that I've seriously considered a "frost
chase"!!

However, morning temps haven't even allowed that! :((

Seriously.... glad that somebody is getting some interesting wx!

Cheers
Kevin from Wycheproof.

P.S. Still only 38 mm. for the year. :((

Actually, my recommendation for autumn chasing in Victoria (before the onset
of our regularly scheduled stratocumulus chases) is the 'blue sky chase'.
This chase is best embarked upon with a couple of friends you are
comfortable spending time with (waiting), a couple of bottles of champagne,
and of course the camera & video to record those little features that will
sidetrack you. in you hunt for 'blue sky' ......pin-oaks in glorious
russets, browns and burgundy, and then there's the ornamental grape - but
I've always found the best chasing territory for this one to be in the
Canberra area.......

Keep an eye on the MSC site for the next 24 hours - you'll see our first
homegrown 'chase humour' page - all donations welcome

Thanks for the welcome! A little more about myself for Jimmy. . . schoolteacher with wife, one child (hates storms - although understandable being only 16 months old), originally from Canberra, moved here 3 years ago (for the job, although coastal weather did affect our decision). Still a bit new to computer stuff, so would appreciate some advice on appropriate size for photos etc. By the way, thanks to David Hart for posting my photo at
http://world.std.com/~dhart/aussie-weather/Storm990304c.jpg
By the way, 300.9mm of rain for April in my gauge in Charlestown if anyone is interested (ave. is 118mm)

Rob.
