Hi Michael,

Sorry to be a pain, but I was wondering do you have radar for
yesterday? All broad times during yesterday upto 8pm, and all local
from midday until 8pm? Or - I understand Michael Scollay has an
archive? Is it possible for me to access this?

I've only seen a handful of loops...some local, some broad...but the
main cell we chased was suspicious (possible rotation, very difficult to
tell) but it's possible that the cell to the N split off away from the
others, and if it did, then that would be very interesting.

Thanks,
Anthony

Sorry Anthony, I hardly ever keep radar as my ISP is limited to 150 hours
per month.

The chase sounds interesting, I will read the messages regarding it ASAP.

It sounds like you Victorian guys are on top of it, great ideas like a guest
speaker from the BOM. It may be a way of breaking the ice for the NSW guys
too, although the hailstorm stuff may have to fade a bit first. I am sure
they are busy putting together a enquiry report.

I think we should perhaps send each other copies of our homegrown videos , I
will send Cllyve a copy of my stuff ( pretty tame ), it just may take time.

Michael and I and others if they wish are going to watch "The Craic"
tonight at 7:15pm at Parramatta Westfield. We are going to get there 6pm,
have something to eat at the food court. IF you wish to come along, you can
call me on 96271943 or Michael's Mobile later on after 5pm onwards
0412145710. Come along have a talk and a laugh. There is a lot to discuss
from my point of view which really has a lot to do with Sydney members.

See you all there.

By the way, welcome aboard to all of the newbies. Everyone is invited to
come along to these social gatherings if you can make it.

Hi Greg,

Exactly what did the BoM say about this image? This image to me looks
like a classic radar overestimation. Many of the regional radars badly
overestimate, but I'm not sure exactly what causes it. Unless CAPE's
were 8000+, I don't think I can believe this image...

Didn't snow fall very close to Canberra on 22 November 1996?. I have a
photocopied Sydney newspaper article which mentions snow on the outskirts
of the city, and at a place called Gundaroo (with a photo showing snow on
the ground there) which seems to be at a similar altitude to Canberra, and
not far to the north.

Hi All,

Great meeting yesterday for the Vics. Good to see everyone (most) of us
there.

In reference to the Giles radar image - i think when this event occurred
someone may've mentioned dust being the cause of such imagery. It could be
worthwhile looking into the lower level winds for the day to see if they
would cause dust storms. Keep us posted on what comes of this becuase I'm
sure there are plenty of curious minds out there (here).

Thanks

Andrew McDonald.

P.S. Bring on the spring. This autumn weather is giving me the S%^T's.

I remember this event - I was in Sydney at the time trying
to promote Canberra to O/S backpackers and all I got was
"isn't it snowing there at the moment?".

The day in question was pretty cold and wet in Sydney with a
top of around 12 I think which went pretty close to a record
for November.

Although I wasn't in Canberra, I remember the media coverage
and the snow in Gundaroo (which may be around 100m higher than
Canberra and about 40km to the north) and reports of flakes
around the outer suburbs which again are around 100-150m higher
than the Canberra station.

Presumably Blair's dates are official observations at the airport
as opposed to observed weather in some of the outlying suburbs over
20km from the airport.

Anthony,

There wasnt reawlly much info about the image. I found it on a site explaining what
the radar is and how it works. They talked about thunderstorms and what to look for
on the radar for thunderstorms and below had the link to that image. Think I will
have to find out some more info on this. Someone else on the list mentioned the
possibility of it being dust storms (any other ideas??)

I'll find out what I can

Go to http://www.rubix.net.au/~cadence to see who even more of the Victorian
members are - and in a fit of insanity I've added a mug shot page - to get
to it, click on the group photo.

Apologies for my sense of humour - I threw in a couple extra BTW, I'm
not advertising this link to the world only to list members!!

No I mean the coloured ones that have the rainfall rate in blue shading
and the thickness in colour coding overlaying the surface charts out to
a period of 7 days.

Greg and Anthony,
I think it might have been me that suggested dust storms. I noticed
this image, or one very close in time to it, at the time. A check of
satpix revealed thunderstorms in the area, but as I remember, cloud
top temps didn't look low enough to be associated with such dense
echoes. Also the large area of max reflectivity, the rapid drop off
and the number of similar "cells" made me recall big dust storms I've
experienced in Central Australia. I'll dig out my archived satpix for
the time together with any obs data and see what it shows.

Anthony, If you haven't got these yet, I archive Moree radar and,
although the action you want is right on the limit of the image, it'd
be better than nothing. Email me.
