Hi everyone

Here is a quick chase report of todays/(yesterdays) storms

Got up at 9.30am and looked at the sky to see accu's everywhere, but being
1/2 asleep it didnt fully register. At 10.30am a mate came over and we
planned to laze about watching videos all day. At about 11am i checked my
email to read of Michael Bath's email about cells off the coast of Sydney
at 9am. I immediatly went out the front and could see some cloud off the
coast, looked like anvil stuff, but when i turned back around to face
west/south west to go back in the house i went Wholey at #$%. Very nice
development around bankstown area. I VERY quickly had a shower, went to the
video shop with my friend and said "sorry i gotta chase, it looks to
good".About this time (12-12.15ish) a small hail shaft was visable with
development everywhere. At my friends place i checked radar and things
looked very good. I left and went to the local car park as usual.. on the
way (about a 10 minute drive) a very nice hail shaft was evident and i was
itching to get there to take a photo. Once i got there i watched for about
15 minutes as the hail shaft got wider and wider(thunder was heard from
development right above me head). After a few more snaps i decided to head
to Ashfield plaza carpark roof, bad decision, traffic jam etc, i did a U
turn and just happened to look down a side street to see a very nice
updraughts with a huge amount of pilius on it (same storm as what was first
observed.)
(If there was no traffic jam i would have made it to the carpark and had a
perfect view of the storm.)
I quickly parked and took 3 or so photos of this as it looked magnificent.
I then continued towards canterbury, and ended up close to the Ice Rink
(big park and bicycle track) and took a couple of more pics, that was when
i noticed that another cell was developing near bankstown again. Even
though the storm was now near cronulla/sutherland and still looked very
nice i decided to go for the new development. Heading along Liverpool
road/Georges river road i ended up near bankstown where i encountered VERY
dark sky's and some thunder was heard, (and a nice CC as well :)
As i drove closer i thought "im not liking this very much" i was basically
heading straight for it, although i was trying to go around it,all attempts
failed. Basically i got caught up in very heavy cold rain and pea size hail
splattering on the windscreen. I was happy as it was the first hail i had
seen since the summer of 96/97 i think.
(i believe this was the cell Michael Bath saw nice hail shafts with, sorry
michael no photos of this one as i was stuck in it :(
I decided to head back to my mates place at concord west to view the
situation again. The cells to the south were dissipating slowly but looking
west towards the mountains there was some promising development. I decided
to head off to Rooty Hill. (only 20 minutes drive away)
A nice cell was developing out west there and a nice roll cloud was
observed over the chatswood area. When i got to Rooty Hill i stopped and
just watched. some nice scud/updraughts.. and as i waited nothing much
happened. After 1/2 an hour i went back home and naturally it picked up
when i left but no lightning was observed.(this cell looked nice at sunset)

And thats it.All up it was a fantastic day. Cloud tops were VERY high and
once again a very enjoyable unexpected chase, with many valuable chasing
lessons learned.

Lessons learned/problems encountered:
1)To much development and i didnt have a clue where to chase at first.
2)My friend didnt help the situation, as i left chasing an hour to
late.(from when i first saw development at 11.30ish)
3)If you think you might not "get around" a cell, pull over, and observe
the situation. I realise now i should have turned back as nothing was
photogenic with this cell.. just dark sky's and a hail shaft heading right
for me.
4)Find some observation points just south of Sydney. If anyone can help me
here id appreciate it (south of croydon/bankstown)
5)Traffic is a big problem but is to be expected living in the inner west
of sydney. Carparks dont seem to be a good place between 11am-3pm for
viewing, as they are full, hence no time to stop and view storms.
6)consider moving out west in the next year or so. Only 15-20 minutes on
the M4.
6)Invent a "Virtual" driver so you can sit in the passanger seat and stare
out the window the whole time :)

Howdy all. Those storms slipped NE yesterday caught in the rotation of the
Low. Nothing was received here but strong - gale force squally winds and a
nice hail shaft to the South. Storms didnt make it much further up the
coast either. Also no rain here at the moment - though I think there was
some last night BUT it is looking very ECL off the coast with the BOM
predicting almost cyclonic force winds here today / tonight at 80 - 100km/h
and seeing that I am only some 1 km/h south of Nobbies I think I will get
them. Will let you all know if it gets any more serious.

Mothers Day. If this is a problem for any of you who could/might attend,
please let me know ASAP. It's too late to change the date, but we could
alter the starting time a little.

During yesterdays activity in Sydney, I was motivated enough to write a
brief observational report of the Sydney Supercell Hailstorm that occurred
on the 14th April. I should have written this several days ago, but you
(VICs) know what it's like :)

I've included the radar and a few pictures, and will add better satpics as
I get organised. Comments/feedback welcome. Check it out from the Storm

Brisbane Airport had a minimum of 7 this morning, breaking the
previous April record of 7.6 set in 1990.

(Caveat - there was a major site change in ~1987 which has led to a
marked downward discontinuity of minimum temperatures).

I'll check on the situation in Queensland and northern NSW once the
0900 bulletins come through.

Hi all,

Going through the 1hr METAR's, the AP reached 8C last night, but that
can be anywhere from 7.5C to 8.4C, 7.6C is the April record, did we
break it? Not sure...the 9am temp report might be interesting, if it
has '7C' as the absolute min for the AP, then we would have broken it -
even if we didn't break it though - it was DAM BLOODY COLD!!!!! You can
have your cold wx back southerners! Gimme a 25C DP + min anyday!

A light N'y actually bumped the temp up a little last night, otherwise
I'm sure we would have broken the record. Well...tonight is a
possiblility too with these SW winds, but if it stays windy overnight,
it will keep the temps up slightly.

A Shivering Anthony from Brisbane

Hi all,

Just a reminder that the QLD ASWA meeting is this Saturday at 10am, the
address is the same as last time, Unit 9/14 Argon St. Sumner.

If you have any queries, please give me a call on (07) 3390 4812 - I
hope to see you all there! If possible, try and be there just a tad
early...as most of you are aware, an ABC interviewer will be coming at
11am, and there will be a few things we'll have to organise.

Thanks,
Anthony Cornelius

Hi all,

Ahh...so we did break the record! I'd prefer to be breaking the
"warmest April min" on record though..!

Amberly might be another to watch, it's lowest is 5.3C? And it's
normally a few C lower than Brisbane...

Actually...the April min for Amberly is 2.1C, not sure where I got 5.3
from....Amberly got down to 4C.

Age: 20
Address: Kenmore, Brisbane
E-mail: s348771 at student.uq.edu.au

I'm currently at U.Q. doing 3rd year minerals processing engineering, but I'd rather be going aroung Oz rockclimbing and chasing storms.

So does anyone know where the storms where in N.S.W on Monday night just after sunset. The lightning was red and hazey looking (a long way away) but by about 9.30 it was closer and white. I'm just curious to know how far away we could see the storm.

I also saw a huge meteorite that lit the whole sky over torwards the Gold Coast. It started of green then yellow and finally exploded in a big red fireball. It managed to catch my attention even though I was looking the other way. Does anyone know anything about this or where I could get more info???????

Thanks

Jason,

Welcome to the list - good to see another Uni student (I do Computer
Science at Wollongong - 2nd Yr). Some of the other guys know a bit about
the Storms in Northern NSW the other night, but re: the meteor you saw,
there were alot of reports from around here (around Mittagong which is on
the Southern Highlands SW of Wollongong) of sitings of them on Monday night
too. One of the meteors was reported to have crashed into bushland causing
a bright explosion. I guess the one you saw was a stray one from this
little cluster.

Hi and welcome to the list Jason

Regarding your question on the storms that occured in NSW on Monday night i
believe they were around the Coffs Harbour and Kempsey Area. There could of
been something further north but im not absolutely sure.

Hey Ben from Brisbane here..

Hey Jason, the storms were actually NE of about Coffs Harbour i think.. or
somewhere near there.. i was VERY surprised you could see lightning from
these storms.. they did look quite nice on radar at times, but the
lightning must have been really intense for us to see it in Brisbane.. i
was surprised when i saw the lightning from the Ballina Supercell not too
long ago all the way up here.. Ballina is about 120km away i think, and
Coffs would have to be 150-180km at least ..

They were saying on MMM (local radio station for those not in Brisbane) the
police were flooded with phonecalls in Brisbane and the Gold Coast from
people reporting strange lights in the sky - the announcer said it was a
Meteorite shower.. wether this is true or not i don't know..

Jason,

I already replied that the storms went as far as just NE of Coffs Harbour,
my email must not have been received by you. In Sydney we can regularly see
lightning on the horizon, well over 200km away and up to 300km on
occasions, confirmed by examining satellite imagery and radar. Don't be
surprised by this - you are looking at the tops of clouds over 10km high
and up to 20km in some storms.

As for radar, just a reminder that when you join ASWA Inc. you will have
access to BoM radar. The annual subscription is just $30 and gives you
issues of Storm News, radar access, competitions, meetings and more.

Hi everyone,
while reading all the email sent to me since last Friday, every
single email was erased - even ones I have saved ages ago with radar
links etc (250 in total)!! GRR! The reason why Im telling you this
is to get Anthony C's attention and get him to tell me the details
about this Saturday's QLD ASWA metting - I assume a message has been
sent?
BTW Anthony I have already looked up all the spotters addresses - not
many matches but Im going to try again tomorrow night.

Lucky my email addresses I saved werent lost!!

THANKS

Just a reminder that NPMOC have changed their links to stuff like
satellite images. This happened between 1630 and 1730 UTC 19990427.

You'll find the satpics within http://www.npmoc.navy.mil/satimages

There have also been some changeover problems with corrupted images
occuring between 199904271730 and 199904280430 at least. I have yet
to archive a decent image since this change has taken effect.

G'day all

I believe there is a large area of rain/squall line off the coast heading
towards Eastern Sydney. (This could have been happening all day but I just
got home)
How does the sky look, and what are the conditions right now?

P.S. Well done Allan Langer on a great career for the Brisbane Broncos and
Rugby League in General. Sorry to see you go.

Hi Ben and all,

Ballina is closer to 230km...Coffs is another 150-200km past that...and
that is a very long distance to see lightning from!! However, it's
quite possible that this cell moved N a fair bit, what time did you see
lightning Jason/Steve? I stopped looking at radar at around 7pm I
think...

B105 (local radio station and better then MMM :P) also said the same
thing about the meteorite shower.

James

The radar loop shows it has been oriented more or less parallel to the coast
for several hours and only slowly moving in, but it should give some heavy
showers to Sydney in the next hour or two. It's a long rainband and looks
like it will affect the coast from Wollongong to Newcastle more or less at
the same time.

I was about 8 -10ft this morning, but much bigger on the horizon. Had to
work to 6pm tonight, so my drive past Warilla beach was in darkness, from
the whitewater that was showing I estimate 15ft, the wind is the key, at
present it is sticking S/SW parallel to the coast. The slightest SE shift
and the swell will jump to over 20ft and the wind will also be pushing it
more.

I think its an all day job as I have noticed the blackness to sea everytime
I have looked ( I work 500m from the ocean ). The wind has to shift a little
to the SE to bring it in, this may happen if the low heads closer and
northwards.

Hey everyone

Well Tueday was an interesting day for everyone. While Matt was
chasing cells around the Sydney Metro I was sitting back in Western
Sydney observing the magnificent formations and structures.
I was in class to 12 noon--(mid semester review-the only classes i
can't skip) and I was constantly rushing to the windows to see all
the action south, south east and north west of me.
Then on my way back to my house I saw a very dense low cloud, which
had no apparent structure other than taht of a base cloud. Anyway my
thought wasn't for it. But five minutes later the indlow into this
system had completely obstuced all my views to the other system. With
this failure, i decided to go home and complete my work. The sky got
darker and it gently began to rain. Then it got heavier and heavier
and persisted like this for around 15-20 minutes.
On the radar approx 30 minute beforehand i had spotted a yellow area
on a cell forming near Katoomba. This is what I believe fell at my
house (werrington downs). Anyway after this period of heavy rain, it
eased off, the winds strongly picked up, and five cracks of thunder
shook my house. THen the rain cam down again. And then the pebble
sized hail--making it the third time in a week. The rain wind and
thunder continued.
Anyway to cut this short in arond an hour from 2-3pm approx 61mm was
recorded in my rain guage and 87mm was recorded between 9-5 Tuesday.
An amazing fall consdering in was bright sunshine at 1pm.
I was expecting to hear news of widespread flooding but this embedded
cell must of saved the best for me.
Anyway just a different report for me. Actually a friend a street up
recoreded 85mm but a guage teh next suburb recorded only 30mm
