Hi everyone,
take a look at these news items (in case you haven't already) relating
to last Wednesday's hailstorm in Sydney.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/weather/weath-19apr1999-4.htm

and

http://www.abc.net.au/news/weather/weath-19apr1999-5.htm

With regards to the report of a 24 hour weather radio station in
Victoria. Quite some time ago, I advocated the setting up of
something like a NOAA weather radio here in Australia. It seems it
takes a hailstorm to strike without warning into a densely populated
region before these issues are widely considered. Otherwise they just
remain the domain of this mailing list and are forgotten.

HI All

Just got back from my OS trip and am currently going through all the
emails I have. I noticed you guys are going to the US next year and
thought that I would offer my services if needed.
I would have no problems getting you guys quotes (Should be cheaper
than normal as I can cut the commision that is made on those tickets)
For group fares you are going to need a large group to gain access to
them, Ive forgooten the minimum amount at the moment but will check
and get back to you guys. It also depends Airline to Airline as well
with travelling at the same time as each other.
Just remember as well when choosing airlines that if choosing an
asian airline that you will go via that Asian airlines Home port
before heading to the US . This can be a pain especially the extra
time on the plane but it can be cheaper.
I can also do the bookings and ticketing from my office no problems
(Reserve seats etc...), so I am there if you need me.
Hopefully I might be able to make it as well.

James Harris

hehe Kieth, yes it will have to be the dark side of the force

Melbourne Update

The cold air has reached Melbourne this morning, there are scattered winter
like Cb clouds. Hail has be reported from many locations in the metro area.
It is cold, below 10, although the south westerly isn't that fresh thank
god.

The BOM expect hail showers up until late morning when it is expected to
start to clear.

With estimates that their damage bill will now reach and even exceed $ 1
Billion this surely will go down in history as one of the most devastating
storms ever. Spare a thought for those expecting rain today :-(

Tough road for those to walk. Unfortunately this is "the dark side of the
force". People still didn't even have power yesterday!!

Weather here is beaut again. Clear blue skies, gentle breeze , mild.
Noticed however a nice developing congestus to the South (Near home
actually) with effervescent convection...so here's hoping.

Paul at Port.

There is a line of Cu along the Range battering the cap and it's only 10:00am...

I hope you're right Anthony.. although i dont like what the models are
doing for us one bit, it was good to see that NE'r come in this afternoon,
and there were some nice Tcu getting some decent vertical extent to our
south - I'd be happy with a nice lightning show if the Change kicks
something up on the Border Ranges tomorrow Evening/Night..

Hi all,

Well...ok, I'm going to say that I think there's the possibility of a
few thunderies in SEQ (SE QLD) tomorrow...today kinda helped make up
my
mind - with a very re-assuring NE sea breeze that came in this

The cold change has just made things dull around these parts. Low cloud,
no rain, not much wind, and a warm night (8C?). Anyone have any news
of snow on the Alps?

Hi John,

It's 26.6C, with a DP of 17.5C here (10:45am)...I've got a variable wind
at the moment, but it seems to be a tad to the SW generally...I hope the
NE kicks in soon.

I can't see very well over on the Range, so keep us updated please! :)

This is a webcam located at Blue Cow ski resort (1905m). It
gets updated ever few hours or so. As of 08:47 today, all that
is showing are some light snow flurries blowing around with no
snow on the ground. This means the ground is warm despite the
possibility of the temperature being just below freezing. As
the ground freezes in these conditions, even a few snow
flurries will accummulate showing up in the next picture.

As I've looked at this webcam for over a year now, you get
used to interpreting what the different conditions look like
from the webcam perspective despite its apparent lack of
clarity. One can read a lot in those "streaks". I have
telephoned people from my ski club who frequent a lodge
in Perisher Valley (~1km from this site and about 90m
lower). They can tell me what is really happening on Blue
Cow Mt using a mobile phone and I've used this info to
work out what the webcam is showing. Yes, I've succeeded
in getting someone to wave as the webcam takes its picture!

If anyone has access to the Thredbo (Mt. Crackenback) AWS
info (hint) then this will give other useful near-real-time
met data.

Hi Paul M. and everyone,
I've heard that someone has found what could be a record sized
hail stone from last week's Sydney hailstorm. Does anyone know anything
about this? One thing is that it is really just for the record since all
these types of storms produce similar sized hail and of course there is
aggregation as the stones fall. But it would be interesting to find out
anyway.

Hi all,

NE'er just kicked in !!!!!! Changed the temp to 27.6C and a DP of
19C...I think they're slightly inflated due to the mixing of the air. I
can see some small, weak and short turkey necks to the SW popping up and
down...

I was not aware that the webcam was live - I figured it would be offline
till the snow reached marketable depths.

Thanks Michael!

Gday Paul G. The radio and TV are now describing the storm as a 1 in 200
year event (which is purely baloney as they didnt have tiled houses 200
years ago (only slate) and they didnt have motor vehicles. But goes to show
how this monster crept up on everybody!

I also heard some speculation about the possible monster hailstone a person
had in their freezer - but no picture was identified.

Another good source for webcams is http://www.ski.com.au/.

At 11.00, it was reporting -2.3. The alpine sites in Victoria have
also been hovering around -3 to -5 for most of the day. In Tasmania,
Mount Wellington is reporting -1.3, Mt Read -0.1 and Barren Tier 0.3,
which are all a couple of degrees warmer than I would have expected.

While the gopher site (gopher://babel.ho.bom.gov.au/) is still alive,
you can get current obs freely off that. In the case of NSW, they
list their METAR reports from automatic stations under the 'Aviation
Weather' menu. THDB is the station code to look for. (Victoria has
a list of current observations - in a much more user-friendly format!
- under 'Observations').

One of the interesting aspects of the outbreak is that the steering
flow appears to be SSE instead of the more normal SW. I saw a nice
big Cb to the south-west whilst running this morning and expected
to get drenched, but only got clipped by its edge. (I was not so lucky
riding into work and was going through quite heavy, although small,
hail for a few minutes around 0850).

It seems to be flattening out a bit now. Melbourne has received 15mm
of precip so far from the system.

The soundings came in a little while ago, the text format soundings have
Brisbane's CAPE at 111, which isn't bad considering it was 22.8C and a
DP of 16.8C when they were taken. But looking at the Skew-T there's a
large cap just above an area of fair instability...which could explain
some of the Cu around to the SW. Certainly there's still a possibility
I believe though, I'd like to thank those who put heaters outside last
night, the min temp was only 16C! But we'll see what happens...

Hi Anthony,

Just went outside and had a peek. NE'er not at Sumner yet, still almost
calm. Cloud to the W and SW has increased considerably in area but not in
height. Cap seems too strong at this stage and shear also is strong
tending to shear off the towers as they reach the cap. Best development
now in the SW.

Hi Everyone,

A short and moderately heavy shower has just gone through here and near the
beginning of it I observed a couple of pieces of hail the size of rice
grains. Looks like there could be more showers on the way here as it is
totally overcast. The current temperature is 16.1 after falling from over 17
degrees before the shower hit.

Hey everyone

A storm has just swept over Penrith-Werrington Downs. Pebble sized
hail fell for 30sec-1 minute in my backyard. We had 60+km/h gusts and
I recorded 10mm in about 15-20minutes. It is steadily raining here
but there are reports of 20c hail in Nelson Bay and heavy hail at
Springwood. The temperature has dropped from 18.9 to 15.8 in the last
hour.

Apart from that it is a great day:)Great to have my computer back
from open heart surgery.

Update...

1:30pm Gentle NE'er at Sumner now. Large area of strong convection near
Southern boarder ranges is now giving the cap a real workout. Could be
good for the Gold Coast a bit later. Radar shows some areas of light
precipitation to the SW, a possible line developing near Tenterfield, and
some strong activity just south of Gladstone.

Hi Everyone,

A brief hail storm has just passed through Blaxland in the lower Blue Mtns.
The largest hail was around 6-7mm. I have also recorded 5mm in a period of
about 10 mins. The hail lasted for only about a minute but was enough to
cover my back porch. Before the storm hit i heard a couple of cracks of
thunder but this disappeared completely when the hail arrived at around
1:30pm.

Well, it may be cold over east, but the warm to hot weather continues over
here in the west, currently its still our hottest april on record, but with
slightly cooler weather forecast into next week, it may be hard to break it.

Currently in Perth City at 12:30pm its already 32.0C.

There is some *VERY* dark and black congestus in my area at the moment,
it's not going to do anything, but it's nice to see. I'm still keeping
my eye on the convection to the SW which at times has a slight orange

The BoM was saying that the gusty winds could raise some dust over inland areas.
Could that be the reason for the colour of the clouds having an orange tinge?

No it won't. Perth Airport's mean is currently sitting on 30.4 (and
today will bump it up another tenth or two). The record is 28.0, so
it would only need to average about 22 (about 2 below average) for the
last 9 days of the month to break it.

The mean anomaly for the month so far is running close to 5 degrees.

Hey Ben from Brisbane here..

I saw that line of Cu thismorning - looked great with the morning sun
shining on it driving down the highway.. You're right about the shear John,
anything that was going up was getting sheared to peices pretty much.. but
looks like things are getting underway now (3pm) though with some healthy
Tcu/Cb to my W and SW.. Some really turbulent bases up here just after 1pm
today as well..

Even though this mornings Soundings showed a horror Cap at 700mb, i'd
almost bet on something on the border ranges this afternoon/evening as the
change comes through.. hopefully something will go well and make it to
Brisbane..

26.5C 63% Humidity and a DP of 19C here at the moment

Update...

1:30pm Gentle NE'er at Sumner now. Large area of strong convection
near
Southern boarder ranges is now giving the cap a real workout. Could
be
good for the Gold Coast a bit later. Radar shows some areas of light
precipitation to the SW, a possible line developing near Tenterfield,
and
some strong activity just south of Gladstone.

      John.

Hi all

3.42pm update

Well a heavy shower developed right on top of me with HUGE drops but no
hail. I'd say it was likely very close to here. A green tinge persisted in
the cloudbase to the near west before it started precipitating. A white
probable hailshaft/heavy rain area soon came out of it. Very slight rumbles
of thunder only. Now just scattered altocumulus and isolated large cu.
Only 2.6mm with the shower/storm. Better than nothing I guess.

Howdy all. Reports in for hail in Newcastle (not big) and taree is about to
be savaged by a "monstrous storm" or so I am told. We had unusual event
here:- a layer of stratocu hit a pocket of instability and went beserk
giving small hail briefly then went out to sea and intensified dramatically
with hard convection and is looking very severe out to sea.

What does Radar look like?? Which direction is it heading??

4:00pm update:

Ah well, action seems to be heading out to sea rapidly. Last decent Cu now
crossing the Gold Coast - looks like an A-bomb. But the sky to SW is now
clear to the horizon. I think the Cu has been associated with a weak dry
line. Anthony you should be having a small shower about now. Radar shows
a weak line now moved through Casino.

Maybe tomorrow will be the day if we get the tail end of the cold front.

Thanks Ben for the reminder. This is a private AWS run by
Koscuzko(?) Thredbo Pty. Ltd. for usually the winter months
only. I spoke to their maintenance engineer last winter who
complained daily of the problems in keeping this running.
It's only a cheapy in comparison to the BoM AWS (THDB) close
by, so it becomes susceptable to glaze and wind damage. It
should be operational again by late May when their WWW-page
is updated.

There are several cheapy AWS's run by the Perisher Blue Cow
mob; Back Perisher, Mt. Perisher, Perisher, Blue Cow and I
think also Smiggins Holes. They feed data to displays down
at the main centres somewhat unreliably. I am not aware of
any plans to make this data available in near real-time on
their WWW-page:-( The official BoM site at Perisher was not
an AWS the last time I looked so manual obs are required
here (just as well:-)

I don't know of any AWS's or observation posts out on the
main range other than something that looks like an AWS at
the top of the chairlift at Charlottes Pass. A chap called
Wragg (I think) had a weather station located on Mt. Kosciuzko
that was manned throughout an extremely bitter winter. I
think this was some time early or mid 20th century. It got
buried in snow to such a depth that one had to climb down
an access portal some 5m high! Suffice to say that Wragg
himself declared that place to be the most inhospitable,
windiest and most frigid place he'd known on the Australian
mainland.

Thredbo Village (elevation ~1350m) was reporting snow at 1500,
with a current temperature of 2 degrees.

The interest, in Victoria at least, now turns to tomorrow's minima.
Dewpoints in inland Victoria are widely below 0, skies are fairly
clear and winds are moderating. I expect many stations will approach
or go below 0, which will take many of them within range of April
records. The relatively modest Tasmanian state record of -7.0 could
also come under some threat.

G'day All! Its Tim here from the Maitland area.

Today I was busy studing down at Newcastle TAFE college in Tighes Hill. At
2:15 pm hail about 0.5 to 1 cm started falling. There was localised thunder
and lightning. The hailshower was moderate mixed in with very heavy rain. By
the end of it there was enough hail on the ground to scoop up to make a small
ball.

Hail fell also in my home town of Morpeth, but not on our property. Other
Maitland suburbs were effected and according to the radio-varies places in the
Port Stephens area. I have just heard that a girl at Irrawag high school in
Raymond Terrace was taken to hospital after been hit by a Hailstone. I don't
know whether this is true or not because it seems everyone this afternoon that
I have spoken to said the hail was only about marble size.

There was many cells that passed through this afternoon-all from the SSE.
Newcastle was hit much harder then here. With some areas apparently expiencing
minor flooding.

Here at home we had 8 mm of rain to 17:15. The temperature has been at a drop
all day - with the current temperature is 12.8C. The winds are blowing at 9
km/h from the S. It is still thundery.

Hail to the size of 20cm - 50cm pieces was reported in large quatities from
the Mitchells Island / Harrington areas with winds tearing off large
branches from trees. Winds were estimated at between 70 - 90 km/h by
Locals. Damage is confined to shrubbery and forested areas at this stage
BUT reports coming in that Manning Point / Harrington have been hit with
the worst part of the storm. Will let you know of more details as soon as I
can get some.

Waiting for storm to hit here at Port. Lightning now to South / SW so heres
hoping.

Yes - it was true. A girl received head injuries after been struck by a hailstone
this afternoon in Raymond Terrace (media reports). Also they are saying there was
hail the size of tennis balls in some areas throught the Port Stephens. Maybe it
was a tennis ball hail that hit the girl!!

Hi all,

After this I'm sure many of you are going to question my
sanity/reliability of reports - so before I go on, I'm saying now that I
do not believe to "exagerate or dramatise" my reports.

As many of you are aware, there was some Congestus/TCU in Brisbane
today, some of it was extremely dark, and one turned into a small Cb,
that gave some very local thunder, and James reported that he saw a
possible hail shaft near him. This small Cb looked quite nice from
where I was, and it was going to pass over me...I noticed a lowering on
the ~WNW of the t'storm, and I initially didn't think anything of it,
except has a platonic lowering that can often occur. I was talking to a
friend while I was watching it (I even had convinced him to come outside
and look at some of the "cool structures"!) As I was watching the
lowering, I thought there was rotation...of course, I thought I was
imagining it initially - however I stared at it for a while, and the
lowered base was actually rotating in my eyes. My friend asked me what
I was looking at, and I questioned him whether or not he saw rotation,
initially he didn't...but soon he responded with "hey, yeah it is too,
what does that mean?" I replied with "umm, I'm not quite sure because
it's not meant to be rotating!" Of course, there was a lot of shear
around, ample infact to allow a thunderstorm to rotate. But this is the
first complication, during this, I heard at the most 5-6 faint rumbles
of thunder, no claps, nor cracks - just very faint. On radio, I had
very occassional and minimal static interference - however this could
have been anything, and not neccessarily lightning induced static.

It was a very nice little lowered base on the edge of the t'storm...and
it was rotating, slowly - it was nicely curved just above me. Winds
were generally 10kn NE, but as it passed almost directly overhead...for
a short period (~30secs) my ears popped! It scared the .... out of me,
because I certainly was not expecting it. As it passed, immediately
after there were some *EXTREMELY LARGE* drops of rain - they actually
looked like hail, and sounded like hail on the tin roof! Certainly, it
was melted hail...

I lost view of it as it tracked NE, and it also weakened fairly
quickly...

Now - what would the chances of something like this occuring? I'm all
open to possible explanations, especially the popping of the ears
co-inciding with the base moving overhead...and the very little and
faint thunder...

If you think I'm crazy, I guess I cannot dispute it, because I'm totally
puzzled myself...

Last week, I had my arm twisted right up me back for not letting other
members know of our meeting early enough. So typing with my other arm, I am
letting people know that I propose that we have a night out at Rooty Hill
RSL. Why out there????

Because, ther is a special on with meals half price!!!! and there is
another reason which nobody will know about but will appreciate it...
Believe me you would.

Should we make a time?? I would say that people nominate themselves to come
along and everyone is invited to do so. Let me know ASAP perhaps via phone
96271943 and I will be there. There is a large variety of food and you will
like the.... shit I almost told you.

Hi every1,

I count myself as the first victim of Y2K (or something...)

My hotmail account has apparently lost the match between my account
name and my password...consequently I'm in cyberlimbo with my old
account...(i.e. all my saved messages which included addresses and
gifted insights into wx events since October are in electron heaven!)

For those that follow these things, my NEW email is
kphyland at hotmail.com
(at least until the next internet meltdown...although I'm not quite
convinced that one of my students hasn't hacked my account and
maliciously changed my password :( )

Soldiering on...

Yes Blair, even some outer Melbourne suburbs could get down to 3 or 4c tonight. at 8pm it was 9.2c at Melbourne airport, 8.3c here in Kilsyth, 7.8c in Scoresby and 7.3c at Coldstream

Subject:	aus-wx: Thredbo Village reporting snow at 1500

Thredbo Village (elevation ~1350m) was reporting snow at 1500,
with a current temperature of 2 degrees.

The interest, in Victoria at least, now turns to tomorrow's minima.
Dewpoints in inland Victoria are widely below 0, skies are fairly
clear and winds are moderating. I expect many stations will approach
or go below 0, which will take many of them within range of April
records. The relatively modest Tasmanian state record of -7.0 could
also come under some threat.

Hi Don, and all,

I thought there were larger hailstones? 14cm in Armidale I think?

I know that the Dec 16 hailstorm in Brisbane had confirmed hail to
10cm....
