Todays forecast is for isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms on both
the BOM and Yahoo weather so here's hoping.

Does anyone know where Yahoo gets the forecasts, especially the temps? The
min. is always inflated and there never the same as the BOM.

 At 10.00 19C, 70%, 1018, NNE 5 knots.

Hi Everyone,

I can see two weak storm cells to my NW at present in the general area of
Lithgow. They dont seem to be moving much at all and look like they will
probably stay on the ranges. The current obs at Blaxland are 27.1 and a
barometric pressure of 1018. It is looking promising for tomorrow. Hopefully
the storms over the ranges today are a sign of better things to come.

One of the storms near Lithgow has grown larger now and there is a lot of
backbuilding currently occurring which is quite spectacular. There are also
some storm cells developing more to my W now as well.

Hi All,

There is a very impressive looking storm probably NE of Goulburn (~100km
away) at this stage (3.10pm). It has a powerful rear updraft with some
backshearing evident.

The storms in Sydney that formed in the west looked to have died
alothough one has a formed anvil but he systems to the south look very
promising. Their is about 4 updrafts along a line of anvil-type cloud.
The western most activity is building rapidly. (3:46pm)

Jane kindly sent me a sat pic and I'm sitting here thinking

Argh - the tough decisions of life!

Interested to see how it develops as it was heading towards the coast.

Hi all. Good luck to all those in and around Sydney for the next 48 hrs
or so. Hope your storm drought breaks in a big way. Who's out and about
chasing (or will be)?

Just talked to Jane and there are cells running at 40-100 around
Goulburn. Things are trying to get going here but there isn't much
happening due to a strong cap and strengthening middle level winds.
We've had more than our share this summer so I suppose it all evens out
:-)

Is anyone in WA chasing the storms to the east of Perth at the moment?

Hi all!

As some of you know, James and I went to see Jeff Callaghan (head of svr
wx in QLD) today about ASWA. Jeff also invited Richard (I believe this
is his name...) who is in charge of warnings and forecasts at the QLD
BoM. We were then taken to a small conference room where we talked
about a few things...

Jeff and Richard are certainly very interested in ASWA and believe we're
doing a good job at the moment. They appeared 100% for ASWA in fact!
Jeff was extremely helpful, I was surprised at how positive the response
was (so surprised I forgot some of the things I wanted to say!) The BoM
was interested in some of the proposals we put forth (including running
a seminar for the QLD svr t'storm spotters) but we'll have to put forth
a formal request to the director of the QLD BoM to talk about funding a
BoM/ASWA seminar if we were serious about it.

For those QLD ASWA members who have requested a 'tour of the BoM' your
wishes have been granted! Jeff said if we were to organise a time, he'd
be more then happy to show everyone how some of the things work at the
QLD BoM office.

We talked about various other things...this will be brought up at the
next QLD ASWA meeting...certainly it's good we got off on a good start.

This one comes from the Victorian Fire Weather Briefing at 11am today......
(to be read using the funny side, not the analytical side of your brain!)

"There are problems with the following AWS's - Horsham - intermittent
reports,
Hamilton - humidity sensor U/S, Sheaks - telstra problem."

Now I understand the technical terms "intermittent" & "telstra" - but I
haven't heard the technical term "U/S" used before - although I daresay it
could mean one of two things ........unserviceable or .................

I'll leave it to you!

I had almost forgotten what they look like. At 1.30pm I noticed one of the
congestus towers on the southern highlands had glaciated, it looked weakish,
but I was desperate, so I hit the road.

Once up the notorious Macquarie Pass and past Robertson I got my first
decent views of the storm rear end. I was surprised to find that it was
quite low and still updrafting. I pulled over at approx 2.40pm just past the
Fitzroy Falls turnoff on the Illawarra Hwy, a few nice CG's were coming from
the northern flank. I decided to press further westwards through Moss Vale,
my plan was to then turn NE after connecting with the Hume Hwy and thus
getting to northern flank.

Moss Vale at 3pm and it was pouring with rain and CG's were active, worse
still was every mother had decided their little darlings of all ages needed
a lift home from school, it took me over 15 mins to get through the town.

Next stop was as soon as I got clear of the rain, this was at Sutton Forest
at 3pm, I rolled some video, the storm base was so-so at the rear end, but
right over my head was a lovely backshearing anvil ( as per Michael Bath's
observation from Parramatta ). The storm here was no outflow dominated, with
a cold breeze coming from the rain core. The Illawarra Hwy at this point
heads W/SW before connecting to the Hume Hwy, this would take me initially
further away from the storm, so instead I took the old Berrima Rd from
Sutton Forest northwards. Not far along this road and water was everywhere,
running off paddocks onto the road, in places it was completely across the
road, but never very deep. Jane O'Neill had reported some 40-100mm per hour
reflects in one of her messages.

Once connected with the Hume Hwy and I was surprised that this storm was
propagating in a north direction, this meant that the rear was now in no
mans land west of the Hume Hwy, I struck out NE in a hope of getting to the
northern flank. Very heavy rain, then pea size hail made the freeway
dangerous, many cars had pulled over to wait out the hail /rain. The freeway
was dangerous because of ignorant drivers, with 50 metres visibility some
people were still doing 110kph.

Once through the rain curtain and disappointment, it was now anvilus maximus
over and east of the freeway, the active rear end was now 20-30km to the
W/NW, possibly on the Wombeyan Caves road. I pulled over at Pheasants nest
at 4.00pm and sat on the grass at the petrol station and watched the rear
end, it looked great but minute by minute was edging further and further
north over the wilderness south of the Blue Mountains.

Regards
Michael

out from the Bureau.

Very dark, thunder and some lovely lightening flashes.
It started about 3/4 hr ago to the WSW and has now reached
us.
No sign of any rain though....
and no film in the camera to photograph...spit!

Hi Jimmy here. I am staying put tomorrow and watch to see what happens.
Then I will make the decision when things begin firing. At least this time,
the trough line of activity is NW - SE orientated and "perhaps" may not
rush north.

I am interested in the activity which was so far ahead of the main trough
line and still showed signs of single cell, large anvil activity. This is
similar to activity Michael Bath observed last year in the same area and
propagated westwards. Michael will tell you the date.

I hope supercells occur tomorrow.

Yep: very impressive storm this afternoon. I was sitting by Lane Cove
river with a friend fishing (no decent fish as usual - not that I'd be
eating anything out of that river) with a glass of wine and watching
some beautiful hard updrafts go up one after the other at the back of
this storm (~5:00pm... I think it was).

What a way to end the working week. I think tomorrow shows some
promise even for Sydney-Illawarra as, sure enough, the LI is slowly
shoving the activity a little bit north.

Cheers

David

Hi everyone, here's the address for the radar in Amarillo for those who
haven't seen a storm on radar/personally for a while. Certainly wouldn't
mind being around there at the moment

We're getting these strange flashes in the sky from the NNW.

Any idea what they could be ;)
