Hi All

Well it is shaping up to be an interesting next few days in Melbourne, with
thunderstorms possible on the next 3 days. Today is looking very promising.
The low pressure trough has already began to deepen over Western Victoria
where a bank of cloud is now evident. Looking to the west of Melbourne I can
now see some Cu on the horizon. It' warm and sunny this morning with a light
to moderate north easterly, Melbourne's Storm wind. Moisture levels are high
due to the persistent easterly airstream we have had for the last week.

I believe that there is a good chance of some action, if not in Melbourne,
nearby (just inland). It all depends on the timing of the seabreeze.

Current Temp 23.8
D.P 14.1
Pressure 1018 (falling)

Hi All,

A gloomy day with 100% Cu cover. Fairly high cloud with no sign of any
activity.
Very unusual in this part of the world to have the humidity and baro.
readings so high at the same time.

LONDON - Europe's growing season has increased by 10.8 days since the early
1960s and is getting longer every year, scientists said.

Thanks to global warming, spring is coming earlier. Trees are unfolding
their leaves and plants are flowering six days earlier than they did three
decades ago, while leaf colouring and other signs of autumn have been pushed
back 4.8 days.

The scientists used data collected from 1959 to 1993 at the International
Phenological Gardens, a Europe-wide network of sites growing identical
plants, allowing a controlled comparison of their growth patterns.

"Our phenological modelling indicates that the changes are caused by a
temperature increase, which is one of the effects of global warming,"
Annette Menzel and Peter Fabian, of Germany's Munich University, said in a
letter to the science journal Nature.

Their findings could be bad news for Europe's ski resorts because they show
winters are getting shorter, but music to the ears of farmers hoping longer
summers will boost harvests.

However, the researchers said a longer growing season did not necessarily
translate into greater crop yields and much of the benefit would depend on
water supplies, rain and snow falls.

"The effects of lengthening the growing season have yet to be quantified,"
they added.

The results were consistent with regional studies showing a shift towards
earlier flowering and a previous report on seasonal change and carbon
dioxide, one of the so-called greenhouse gases blamed for global warming.

cancelling it rather than send. You will see it somewhere in the message
"from" try it to my e-mail that I send to you. Even though it has
aussie-weather on the top, you will see the sender's e-mail address in the
body of the e-mail message. Here is the example of the one you sent which I
pretend forwarded. Hope it helps.

Hi Jimmy here

Great!!! Hope you get some action. We had an interesting formation here in
the form of a roll or shelf cloud from a heavy developing shower associated
with a trpical cumulus type cloud.

Atmosphere over Central Victoria is becoming more unstable

EDT: Dry bulb 32.1, rel. humididy 29%, dew point 11.9 deg., wind NNE,

Thanx for the tip Jimmy - it did not provide email address, in the
From line it gave just the name. But it did solve another of my
little problems. It gave me the source date and time. That was
great. I did try Forward on several messages from different people,
including your own, but they all just had the name of the sender.
Incidentally, if others read this, I was really only wanting to
access Lindsay's email at this time, to avoid boring everyone else
with non-weather stuff. I did collect reponses at the time Jane
requested details, and have several direct emails in a 'people'
folder. Lindsay came on the scene a litle later. I am most grateful
for the help and assistance I receive along the way, believe me.
But I do agree that I am suffering from the dreaded
'budgetsystemitis'. :-(

Cheers,

Nandina,
Re dry bulb temperature. Inside a Stevenson thermometer
screen there are usually two pairs of thermometers. One pair, the
minimum and maximum register the lowest and highest temperatures
accordingly since they were last set. The other pair, the dry and wet
bulb thermometers are used to calculate humidity, which can be expressed
in various ways, eg. realative humidity, absolute humidity, dew point,
vapour pressure, etc. The dry bulb thermometer is an ordinary
mercury-in-glass thermometer that registers the actual temperature
inside the screen. The wet bulb thermometer is idendical to the dry
bulb except the bulb is covered with muslin, with a cotton wick
attached. This wick is immersed in a container of water, and by
capillary action the muslin covering the thermometer bulb is kept
constantly wet. It is the difference between the dry and the wet bulb
temperatures that determines the humidity of the surrounding air. ie a
large difference, the air is reasonably dry; a small difference and the
air is damp, as there is less evaporation taking place, and hence very
little heat is being 'removed' from the thermometer. So when dry bulb
temperature is being refered to, it just means the actual air
temperature inside the Stevenson screen.

Rod Aikman

There are a couple of huge cells to the east at the moment over the
ranges. Hopefully they aren't reliant on heating and will go well into
the night.

Earlier I also took a photo of the lowering over Werribee, albeit from
40 kms away. It looked great from that distance so Clyve's photo should
be awesome. There was also a cell over the NE which moved in almost to
the city with lots of thunder and a very distinct rain shaft. I'm
guessing that it was in the 80mm per hour range.

I may see some of you Melbournians up the mountain a bit later on, we'll
see what happens. The next two days should be good too.

Chris

There seem to be some fairly significant storms over western NSW right
now. I'm not sure what the radar coverage is like...Does anyone have
further information?

Hi all,

Just had a call from Clyve Herbert who stopped his train (he's a train
driver) to photograph a funnel cloud from the storm east of Melbourne. It
occurred at 6.35pm about 30km from him. Apparently Jane and Andrew just
missed photographing it as well.

Hi all. Good storm developed in th local area (Kilsyth) and then
intensified just to the east of us between 6.00 and 7.00pm. Several
good cg's with loud thunder here in Kilsyth gap times about 3 seconds.
4.6mm of rain here between 6.00and 6.30pm. Heavier falls just to the
east Coldstream recorded 27mm. Storm now clearing to the east. This
was thunderday 10 for Kilsyth this summer, some melbourne suburbs may
have had 11 or 12 thunderdays for the summer. The weather pattern is
virtually static at the moment so further storms can be expected
across Victoria and southern NSW tom amd Tuesday. Dane

OK.Ok. I give in ... here's one of my own ...and some homework for
the snow buffs!

It was back when I was about 12yrs'ish old ... that would have been
about 1977 give or take a year ...

We were visiting rellies in Murgon, and they took us to a picnic spot
on a mountain near Kingaroy .. it was school hols so it would have
been ?May June? ... winter thereabouts.

Ennies .. all I know is it was BLOODY cold the afternoon we were
there... and there was trouble starting the car in order to leave.

We left to head onto Brisbane the next day ... when we rang them back
o let them know we'd arrived ok, and they told us the picnic place
area where we'd been had had SNOW that night after we'd left .. the
first time ever there ..

Anyone care to pin this event down for me??

Hi all,

Further to the Melbourne excitement, upon ringing Jane Oneil and Andrew
McDonald on their t'storm chase, they have reported a total of three
funnel sightings!!! I'm certainly looking forward to these pics!

Hi Truffles,
I am not sure whether this is the same incident or not, but
on the 31st of May 1977, there was a severe cold outbreak over
south-eastern Australia. Snow fell in many places in Victoria, some for
the first time in recordable history. I have details about this cold
outbreak's influence in Victoria only.

Andrew & I headed off for the east of the state at 6.25(ish) after trying to
work out where the humongous ('scuse technical jargon) cells just to the
east of Mt Dandenong would go. Finally decided to drive south down Stud
Road, get petrol and then decide if we should go south then east or just
directly east. Just before we stopped to get petrol Clyve rang to report
the funnel that he photographed, & while filling our tank a couple of
minutes later, Andrew and I just stared as we saw 3 (okay, maybe funnels is
a bit of an exaggeration) funnel shaped protruberances all from the flanking
line to the SW of this cell.

Interesting co-incidence here - the last time we had a funnel sighted (and
videoed in Melbourne) the cell was showing signs of mesocyclonic rotation -
same today - spotted the system starting to swing around the cell to the
north (again). BTW the BoM reported that this storm went severe just before
the funnels were reported . It was also moving to the SW with all other
cells in the area moving to the SE.

So after all this excitement and some photos we drove a further 190km (just
to have a Big Mac in Warragul I think) and then turned around and rocked
back home (10.15pm) to the extra loud 'bust chase music' supplied by The
Offspring (Americana).

Moral - if it's exciting here, don't go looking for more excitement
somewhere else!!!

Our thanks to Anthony Cornelius and Michael Bath for keeping us up to date
with info during our travels, to GMH for supplying a damn good chase car,
Macdonalds for supplying dinner, Mobil for the cheap petrol (61.9c in Melb
compared to 69.1c 60 km down the road) and Clyve Herbert for chase reports
and insanity in regular doses.
