Was encouraged to see other newbies asking for explanations, too. Maybe
there is a glossary of sorts that could be recommended - huh?

motto............) The Forecast for home (Taree) sounds great with
Thudnerstorms likely on Saturday...........here's hoping. Other then that
the models seemt o indicate a wet few days for the NE Coastal

Hi all,
For those of you who did not attend last nights weather meeting, not
only did you miss out on a lot of fun! But you wouldn't have heard that
Brisbane got another thunderstorm overnight. It was only a small one,
lightning every 40-50seconds, which was generally sheet lightning.
However I know that James had to log off due to the closeness of some
lightning strikes in his area, I only had one CG near me, about 400-500m
away. There was very little wind, except the occassional 15kt gust, but
it rained quite heavily. I received just over an inch from the storm,
and I know that this is James's news (sorry James) but he had 44mm from
the storm! Which is a fair bit from a mere 'coastal showery storm'
although it was a lot more then that! It came as quite a surprise, as
00Z soundings for yesterday showed the atmosphere to be ROCK SOLID -
which a huge capping at 2500-3000m. Yet last nights 12Z sounding had
the atmosphere completely unstable until 8000m, where the capping was.
At the moment we have moderate rain with occassional rumble of thunder
here (9:21am)
Hopefully this rain will clear if Santa is going to bring me that
supercell I wanted, or maybe this is all I'm going to get because I've
been naughty this year? :) I'll take this opportunity to wish everyone
a very merry, and above all safe Christmas and a very happy New Year.

Hi everyone,
I noticed that the 1st storm of the day had already formed on the ranges
to the SW of Canberra by 11.00EDT (24/12/98). There is strong Cu
development right along the spine of the ranges to the west which augurs
well for later in the day and for tomorrow!! No development away from
the ranges as yet.
Today seems much more active than yesterday and we have much more
available surface moisture - so things are looking up...
Best wishes to all on the list for a great Christmas and an
"interesting" (weatherwise) 1999.
I would also like to thank everyone on the list for their contributions
this year, and in particular those with the great and highly informative
www sites. The web has so much to offer in relation to weather and I am
sure that I would be much more ignorant but for the links (and
instructions) that have been provided by a number of people on the list.
It has also been great to link in with the developing Australian weather
community and to share some of the years highlights of storms, cyclones,
snowfalls and other records as well as the tedium of sitting out the
stationary ridges from hell.
I feel I have learnt far more about Australian weather in the last few
months that I did when studying several units of meteorology at Uni many
years ago. So thanks for the hard work, generosity and the enthusiasm. I
am sure that ASWA has a strong future ahead of it.

Good heavy falls received in the Grafton areas, from 3pm 23.12 til 9am
24.12 Grafton received 100mm!! Its a bit wet they tell me, and alot of
minor flooding around the place.
The Locals say that in the hills to the west, alot more was received (some
are talking about 10 inches!!)
The BOm only has a AWS in Grafton so it would interesting to see some info
come in!

Firstly, Merry Christmas to all for tomorrow - I hope santa delivers the
goods in the form of storms (although it sounds as though some may just get
I.O.U's).
Down here in stormless melbourne things are looking promising with a
sprinkling of growing Cu at the north end of the bay. They've forcast for
a possible late storm and things are shaping up well.
I don't think I'll have a chance to get out until late this arvo or even
tonight although I do have to go out for a while soon so I might make it an
extended trip (hehe).
Once again have a safe and joyful christmas (and chase if you're lucky
enough).

at present it is MELBOURNE CITY Temp: 33.5 DP: 8.7

I could fancy a drive up Mt Dandenong later but we have to go the long way
from Abbotsford - Camberwell - Bayswater - Hampton Park to deliver the girls
back to their mother - so it's all going to be a matter of timing - but
then, I've got the camera and the video and I'm not driving :).
Anything exciting, I'll let you know later tonight. Keep an eye on the
Melbourne cam - it points eastish and that's where things will happen.....

I live in Gembrook where there is now considerable Cu but its
still out to the East have seen 2 reasonable size cells from around
1:45pm haven't had a look in the last half hour or so i have to go out
soon so i may not get a chance to get back on line today. you know all
that Chrissy stuff. I live about 25kms East SE of mount Dandenong

Also, i was wondering what sort of camera's you guys use to take storm photo's?
I have just the regular point and shoot camera (mind you it's not a cheap one,
but it's not an expensive one either) and out of 48 storm photo's i took, 2 of
them came out :( I was told that the cheapest camera to take storm pics with
starts at over $500 (an "SLR" one) .. does anyone have a second hand one that
they would be willing to sell? or know of a place/person were i could get one?
any help would be appreciated

Went for a drive around 1pm. Saw a decent cell with overshooting top out to
the east, probably Warrigal way. Cu all over the place now - nothing great
at this stage. But still looking promising for later this evening.
We did take some photos of the cell so you'll see them eventually.

Yeah, I've been using point and shoot cameras for twenty years and have
only about twenty halfway decent shots.
SLR (Self-Loading Reflex, I believe) cameras must be better, just from
the point of view of choices.
I guess anything that allows for different light levels, is waterproof,
and can zoom, or take time exposures, would be right up there with an LP
supercell on my Chrissy list. :)

I wrote this regarding Ben but I think it may be applicable to others on the
list.
Jimmy here,
Ben I had my camera stolen recently so I went to a loan office (second hand
places where people take things in in exchange for money). I obtained a good
camera with zoom lens for $550.
However, before you go to these shops, check the price of a new one. If you
have a spare $1000, there is a good new camera that allows automatic and SLR
functionality .... It has a 28 to 300mm zoom lens. I alsmost went for it but
crossed the road and saved $450. I would liked to have bought that camera
but because of the theft, I don't want to sepnd much.
Also, I don't believe your camera cannot take good cloud photos. If your
camera can zoom, then it is sufficient. If you have a bulb setting, then you
can also take lightning pics at night. If I were you I would go back to
where you got the photos developed as these days they set the machines on
automatic developing settings which discriminate against our clouds. Your
photos probably concentrate more on the foreground horizon rather than the
clouds. You have to train a developer to know what sort of photos you have.
You must always inform them they are cloud photographs which should be the
subject. They will then get to know you and will set accordingly. Keep going
to them and they will take care of you. If they charge for reprints each
time you want something done again, go elsewhere. My place is Kodak express.
Just a few helpful hints as Michael Bath and I have gone through this with
the 3000 pics we have.
For your info, I used to use my mother's automatic camera which took good
photos. I hope this helps.

Hi Ben and Kevin,
Ben - I use an SLR for all my photography and they are especially good for
lightning - allowing you to leave the shutter open to capture the lightning
on film. This is one advantage of an SLR for storm photography (that's if
you intend to take photo's of lightning).
Kevin - Just wondering about the weather up in Wycheproof. Is it looking a
bit stormy? Sat pics show activity to the east and also some to the NW of
melbourne but not much up your way (not that far NW).

It was a very nice 44mm in about 50mins at my place last night roughly
between 10.20 and 11.20pm. At one stage the rain was torrential, and
20-25kn SSE'ers were blowing the rain horizontal. To 9am today we'd had 89mm
and all up to 4.30pm we've had 107mm.
Right now, its cloudy but mostly fine - just some light spits. I'd say we
may get 10-15mm overnight from frequent showers that should just about break
to a fine day on Xmas morning (just a gut feeling!)
On Sunday the BoM is going for 34 in Brisbane, and 37 in Ipswich with sultry
conditions and afternoon t'storms. If they're right, we'll be sweltering!

As it turns out I was by no means alone when we received all this rain.
Here are some stats by the BoM:
RAINFALL SUMMARY
Rainfall in the past 24 hours was confined mainly to the Peninsula, the east
coast north of about Mackay and the southeast Coastal districts where there
were
some very heavy falls. The highest falls included Natural Bridge 228mm,
Nerang
106mm, Miami and Kuraby both 103mm and Coolangatta 90mm.
In the 6 hours to 3pm the rain was mainly confined to the Southeast coastal
district with the highest fall being 95mm at Logan City followed by Canungra
Army Camp 47mm and Hinze Dam 34mm.
PS: Natural Bridge is about 30km inland of the Gold Coast, in the Numinbah
Valley - spectacular place! The waterfalls must be fantastic right now.

Hi Andrew,
It feels a bit warmer here than I thought it would be ( about 36 or 37
C), but nothing cloudwise but a bit of shallow Cu. However, it does
'feel' like something's developing. LFTX indices are still between -3
and -6 tomorrow after lunch (negative all night actually!) so with a bit
of serious diurnal heating maybe we'll get something. I've got a fresh
roll of Kodak in the old camera anyway! Cloud is still drifting slowly
from the NE (normally a good sign) but no sign of any vertical
development.
Does anyone know of a site showing simply where the STJ (sub-tropical
jetstream) is located? Does it ever get this far south this time of year
(36 S)?

For looking at upper level wind profiles I generally head to
NGP or AVN: http://www.fnmoc.navy.mil/wxmap/web/ngp.ausnz.1998122400.htm
or
COLA: http://grads.iges.org/pix/aus.fcst.html
Just click on 200 or 300 mb winds
Just looking at COLA for Friday, the one I'm looking at is old - 48 hours
out, ( http://grads.iges.org/pix/aus5.48hr.gif ) it looks like your area
will be under the influence of a strong upper level jet although not a
lot of divergence at that level. If you look at the Saturday profile (
http://grads.iges.org/pix/aus5.72hr.gif ), which is 72 hours out, you can
see a WNW jet streak over central NSW (purple shading) and some
divergence (indicated by the orange streamlines) to the right of this.
This will help intensify upward motion in an atmosphere which is
predicted to be unstable and hopefully get some of the updrafts rotating,
if surface winds co-operate. So Saturday is looking ok for strong storms
in parts of NSW - at this early stage (well was until I said this!). You
can also see very strong upper level divergence over Port Phillip Bay
(red streamlines), but this will be too late to aid in storm development
for Victorians with the front having moved through.

If you wish to get winds at various levels, you can use the same link and
procedures as for Lifted Index maps but chose winds. It gives you a chance
of seeing 3 hourly forecast of winds (AVN model). The levels are the
mandatory levels. It is a great site with many variables to plot. Here it

Choose the correct times. On the second page choose winds or whatever
variable you wish Choose Australia, plot. It's easy. The latest model data
is just in. Now I can check out Sunday's prognosis

Finally broke our Thunderday drought in Melbourne. A thundery shower to the
south of here (Kilsyth) produced a few rumbles and a couple of cg,s around
7pm, no rain here in Kilsyth though. Still some sheet lightning to the far
east over the back of the Dandenongs . Havent heard anymore about that
Lightning death on Philip Island. Any one else heard more. Dane
