It's long overdue, but Police have finally been given the powers to "clamp down" on car hoons. New legislation has been passed giving police power to secure vehicles for a set amount time.

The wheel clamps are placed on offender's vehicles who are caught and convicted for street racing and burn-out offences.

Offenders will be forced to pay for the clamping service. Should the owner tamper with the security device a fine of $2,200 will be issued per offence. Two vehicles based in the Campbelltown and Wollongong area have been the first to be subject to the new laws after they were seized two days ago during an alleged street race.

Their cars were returned to them today with the additional yellow clamp which has been locked to their tyre.

NSW Police Traffic Commander John Hartley is hoping that this will serve as a warning and deterrent for all hoons who choose to take serious and careless risks on our roads.
The clamping trials began at two local area commands on 26 September 2008 and will continue until further notice.
