Extreme Storm Chaser Marko Korosec captured this "landspout" (or non mesocyclonic tornado) near Kozina, Slovenia on July 26th. Soundings showed high LCLs, weak deep-layer shear and relatively zero storm-relative helicity on this day, suggesting this tornado was not derived from a supercell. He said it lasted about 6 minutes and strong upward motion and rotationwas observed just above the ground! Tornadoes in Slovenia are extremely rare, and Marko says that this is the first footage of a tornado in Slovenia that he is aware of! Check out more of his amazing photos here!

Meanwhile, the first tropical storm in the Gulf this year, could provide some much-needed rain to the drought-stricken state this weekend as it should only make landfall as a tropical storm. Nevertheless, farmers will take any type of rain they can get; with most of the state in serious drought conditions. From the period of October of 2010 to June 2011, this has been the highest drought period recorded since 1895 for the state of Texas. Hopefully, this TS can bring some much needed relief to some of the state! Below is a map of the projected path of TS Don given by the NHC.

Reports from last night's storms in eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois show that nearly 15 inches of rain fell, with Galena, Illinois recording the most with 13.45! Extreme Droughts to the south, and excessive flooding to the north (along the Missouri River) continue to plague communities across the central part of the country.
