Hi Harley,

Yes that dark base was interesting!

I left school and had to rapidly get through to road works and once I grabbed the camera gear, I photographed and filmed the interesting base. The storm looked to have supercellular characteristics which is confirmed by radar motion.

Hail to at least 1.5cm here. I would not mind seeing more

Im not sure if it is even worth mentioning but very tiny but red cells developed here today

1) main one - Coffs harbour and up the coast to Yamba
2) Right now NW of Grafton

Are these tiny isolated ones worth it ever since WZ shows many CG's coming from it?

I was caught up in a meeting this afternoon at the office in Chatswood, so missed the buildup. My boss in the meeting got an EWN warning during it, presumably for his home at Castle Hill as I didn't get one until later on for my registered location.

Came out about 3:45 and checked the radar, and the cell that was near Robertson at the time looked particularly nasty with a nice black core. Apparently it fell apart as it came off the escarpment, but I had left by then. Lots of thunder at Chatswood but no lightning seen. Fairly consistent light rain on my drive from Chatswood to Wahroongha where I had to head after work at about 4:10 to pick something up.

Antonio - those were quite long lived cells for their size. No doubt they would have had some organised structure. Have seen something similar happen before though yesterday was not quite as strong: refer this thread

Regarding the Sydney storms, the atmospheric profile certainly improved by afternoon as you can see in the attached sounding. The cell that passed over Robertson was pretty impressive too.

This morning looks Fab from my place looking EAST huge and i mean huge Towering cumulonimbus from north right down to SW it is most likely Ballina and other Costal towns today will have huge bursts of rain. WZ also shows Lightning in those cells.

I agree with Michael, probably some organised structure there. I think one thing to point out is that you really can't judge a storm purely on size. For example, LP supercells, while having very little precipitation are capable of producing large hail. I can remember a storm near Lismore a while ago that didn't look particularly good on the Grafton radar but was producing 6 cm hail at the time. The condition on that day were a lot better than yesterday however.

Here is the storm I was talking about-

http://www.australiasevereweather.com/forum/australian-severe-storms-significant-weather-events-and-storm-chasing/nsw-storms-27th-31st/30/

http://australiasevereweather.com/storm_news/2008/radar/20081230/grafton128.htm

Not making any comparisons to yesterday but I do suggest having a look at the radar (especially in the early stages) and then compare to some of the photos. Shows you don't need a massive big black core to have amazing structure and severe weather.

Hey guys, that cell that passed near Wooli was certainly long lived, I wish I could have chased it. Also it seemed to deviate a bit. I took these shots of it when it was around Maclean after tafe.

Hey guys I went out to Mylstom tonight to wait for some lightning but it wasnt to be :( but I did score a distant possible waterspout instead. This came from the shower just off Nambucca Heads.

This one was taken before the waterspout, thats just scud.

A Couple of photos from today.

The first storm of the day about to pass over Beaudesert. Personally I wasnt that excited by this storm, sure it had some pretty nasty rain & small hail however most of the lightning was hidden amongst the rain and the structure was sort of ok (another Shelf Cloud). It may have got better as it moved north however at that point I wanted to stay clear of the city. Maybe I'm getting picky in my old age.

I decided to head west to the Downs where I was hoping the warmer air, good moisture and elevated ground would create some storms with a bit more isolated structure. On the way I got a nice side view of the big storm heading towards Toowoomba. Huge anvil spreading off to the SE with some nice structure in the distance

The surface easterly was pushing nicely up over the range creating some nice inflow into a developing storm near Freestone. I watched for the next hour as this base developed into a nice little storm. The storm gave some great CG's, heavy rain, hail to 2cm (mostly around 1cm) and some nice base structure. The base had some short lived rotation that produced a nice scud lowering (last picture) before a strong downdraft and outflow took over.

Plenty of flash flooding on the roads and in the fields.

Some time-lapse of the Freestone-Allora storm in its last stages. Nice downdraft to cap it off towards the end of the video. Most of the lightning was off to the left of screen.

Hi James,

Nice base and powerful convection - that region is primed for severe storms.

I have upload a video for the 27th October supercell looking structure. Comments would be appreciated. Above the base you can see the updraft possibly rotating. Nevertheless, not a bad structure to pass right over your house!

31st October 2010 storm observed from near Gosford

Severe storms were reported on the 31st October 2010. This was not one of them - I decided to stop and take a look at this one on the way up to intercept other severe storms but they had run out of steam by pulsing into severe limits and dying. So this was the best on radar late in the day in a slightly better shear environment. Love the cotton wool upstairs but look pst those and there were some half decent updrafts but I would say more of a relaxation time out in between storm days with family
