The Gulf Country in Queensland is an area worth watching for severe storms in the next couple of days. Already some interesting storms up there this afternoon. One, passing close to Burketown has been going for a couple of hours now. Convection looks a lot more organised than other parts of the tropics. Low level wind's N'ly 20-30 kts (see Burketown AWS) inflow to the storms. Steering winds ~20 kts S/SW'ly...So there's around 30-40 kts of directional shear..CAPE's >= 3000 J/Kg. Tomorrow's looking better with a nice backing hodograph for the Burketown region: surface N/NW'ly 20/30 kts, 700Hpa W/NW'ly 20-30 kts, 500 Hpa W/SW'ly 20-30 kts due to the influence of a surface heat low over Roper/McArthur..Not bad...Would love to be up there!

Interesting Paul - would not have looked there without your prompt. Quite impressive on the satpic loop (http://australiasevereweather.com/storm_news/2007/satpics/20071202/satellite_loop_20071202.htm)

A very large blob of lightning activity in that region this morning also. There's a deep heat low at 999hpa just to the SW of the Gulf which is causing all this, it's moving in a NE direction and will be closer again as the days go by although it is weakening and ranging from 1006-1010hpa by Thursday. (Storms inland around Darwin are moving as one would expect from an affect of the wind circulation from the low from the W to NE of its western side which the sounding confirmed at 12Z, westerly winds are quite strong and are not expected to weaken at least by the week's end)
Satpic looks unbelievable! Appearance of a tropical depression in the early stages, alas not to be though...:(

Yesterday there was 105 km/h gust recorded at Cloncurry, 95 km/h at Mt Isa and a similar gust at Phosphate Hill...not bad...looks like more action today. I think the Northern Goldfields/eastern Gulf Country will go off today!
