Title: Eastern NSW Storms 4th April 2007
Post by: Jimmy Deguara on 05 April 2007, 01:36:30 AM
There is the potential this afternoon and evening of storms across eastern NSW. Upper level temperatures are pretty modest even for this time of the year. I thought it was worthy of discussion.

Interesting slow moving cell west of Katoomba at present. Got an STW now:

Hi Gang

wow,  interesting morning !!  I was amazed with what I was seeing .... that storm cell over the eastern
suburbs this morning ...  I thought it was about to drop a tornado.
The lowered base had significant rotation. I struggled to get decent pics of it as I was driving over the harbour
bridge at the time before going down to the Milsons Point area at the nthrn end of the bridge.

Hi Dave,

Nice catch! Spoke to Nick last night and he also captured and described the same feature. Well put it this way, there were low bases yesterday and the shear based on inflow were such that it was deep inflow. Could you please indicate which direction we were looking? It looks as if it were outflow and inflow interaction. How long did the feature last?

Seeing that sea surface temperatures were modest and the upper levels were cold, that provided decent lapse rates for the coastal suburbs at least during the morning. Despite the dynamics, there was the potential of waterspouts yesterday.

Hi Jimmy,

1st 4 pix were nth bound on the sth end of the H-bridge,  view east over the top of the
Opera House
5th pic  from Milsons point (under the bridge) view east, you can see the cranes etc of the
Garden Island naval base in the lower right of the pic.
the feature lasted for some 10 mins before dissapating

the rainfall in the eastern area  Bondi Jnct - Rose Bay  was very heavy
This cell continued to move in a roughly northerly direction  I took more pics of it from
Sailors Bay Rd, Northbridge. where it was dropping periodic CG's
It then  moved almost over the top of my workplace (company office) a bit east of Chatswood

cheers

Great shots Dave considering you were on the move too.  Talk about low bases.  I particularly like the shot with the tops of the Opera House in the foreground.  It is interesting that Jimmy mentions possible outflow/inflow interaction.  Was the rotation you saw clockwise or anticlockwise?

Brad.

Hi guys , sorry to take a while.
this storm for a while did appear to have angular motion in the base but i thought at first it was gust front stuff but it was interesting then it weakened rapidly. I shot this from Vaulcuse then drove into the rain in rose bay where i proceded to run up the arse of someone on new sth head rd so i got drenched sorting out all the crap you do when you have a fender bender.

Hi Nick,

nice to know I'm not the only one to have done that !!!!!
did the same on Narellan Rd some weeks ago whilst chasing that BIG storm that went
by Campbelltown and out to the coast...
worse part was that it was the company vehicle :(     fortunately its still driveable

Thanks for your pix of that event from a different perspective.

Brad ....  pretty sure it was rotating anticlockwise .... there was definate motion there :)

cheers
