Title: Melbourne small isolated storm - very early Sun 11th Feb
Post by: Brad Hannon on 15 February 2007, 04:10:30 PM
Hi all, we've had a bit of action down here - I say a bit, because it simply can't match what you NSW/QLD guys have been dished up in the last week or so.

I couldnt sleep on Saturday night and as the hours ticked into Sunday morning I picked up the faint deep base sound which I initially mistook for the rumble of an approaching jet (I live directly under the flight path for Tulla airport although a long way from the airport).  When the rumble ceased and then started again seconds later I jumped out of bed and sure enough, there was bright flashing from the East over the Ranges.  5 minutes later (1.00am) I was at an elevated eastward lookout a short distance form my house and watched as the storm moved Westward across the northern suburbs.  I captured my first shot below just as I noticed noise of movement amongst the bushes and grass nearby - kangaroos!  My second shot was a few minutes later.

I then moved a few kilometres to the West to the highest point in Metro Melbourne with great views and captured the last 2 shots.  By 2am the show was over and I headed to bed.

PS these lightning pics are my first since June in the USA!!!!!!!!!!

Uuu, nice images! I like the city lights in the background, also the colors look amazing. That kind of elevated position rules for taking such images.

Thanks Andrej, the position of the last 2 pics is the highest point in metropolitan Melbourne and has almost 360 degree views.  And I thought you were going to comment on the kangaroo hehe.
