Title: NSW and SE QLD Rain Event / Flash Flooding Coffs Harbour and Sunshine Coast :28 Mar - 7 Apr 2009
Post by: Michael Bath on 29 March 2009, 03:20:46 AM
Saw a few flashes of lightning last night from some low topped cells in the southerly stream. 12mm to 9am from fairly brief but heavy showers. A few coastal Northern Rivers sites have received 30-40mm to 9am 28 March 2009.

Latest report for northern rivers shows that in the next 6 days we could expect 20-40mm and 40-80mm of rain this morning we woke up to very heavy rain.

Yeah, model output continues to forecast some significant falls along parts of the Southern QLD and Northern NSW coast over the next several days. Might be in for some flooding with such a large blocking high, possible coastal low and great upper level support (cold air aloft).

Today we've had some scattered heavy showers from large cumulus / weak cumulonimbus.

19mm here since 9am.

If the forecast models are right our pattern for next week from BOM is:

(Saturday is showers and very windy, the rest of the week:)

Forecast for Sunday
Showers increasing to rain. Moderate to fresh SE winds.

Precis:       Showers increasing to rain
City:           Min 20    Max 25
Bayside:      Min 19    Max 25

Monday         Rain periods. Windy.                   Min 21    Max 24
Tuesday         Rain easing                              Min 21    Max 26
Wednesday     Showers                                  Min 20    Max 25
Thursday         Showers                                 Min 19    Max 26
Friday             Showers                                 Min 19    Max 26

I say "if," because everyday the 7 day forecast changes, ( I was going to say, more than a babies nappy, but I wont). Last night it was 20 min, 27 max for next 7 days. 4.00am this morning we now have this. But in saying all that, last week in one of the threads I did say that last weekends paper quoted one  of the forecasters stating that we were in for some above average rain over the next few weeks. He was saying around the SEQ  but it looks like Northern NSW is in for a Buffeting. It is extremely windy today. Took the kids and wife to do some laps at Sandgate pool, we had a very heavy down pour that just about ripped your skin open.

Cape Moreton               83 KM/h
Double Island Point        96 KM/h
Brisbane Airport            46 KM/h
Redcliffe                      59 KM/h

If the ants are anything to go by, they are working madly around the houses up here, climbing up the walls into the roofs. Usually a sign of a big wet.(You worry when they have life jackets on though).  Seriously,  I think as Michael Bath stated, we could see some flooding.

You might have to cancell SEQ for the rain event that was supposed to happen according to forcasts. I still believe we are in for heavy rain soon.
(It will totally change again late today or tomorrow.)

Today's 7 day new forcast.

A few showers, increasing tonight. Moderate to fresh and gusty SE winds.

Precis:       Few showers
City:         Max 27
Bayside:      Max 26
UV Alert:     8:40 am to 3:10 pm, UV Index predicted to reach 9 [Very High]

Monday        Showers, windy.                        Min 21    Max 27
Tuesday       Showers easing early.                  Min 21    Max 29
Wednesday     Shower or two.                         Min 20    Max 28
Thursday      Showers.                               Min 20    Max 27
Friday        Showers.                               Min 20    Max 27
Saturday      Showers.                               Min 20    Max 27

(Maybe to much reliance on the computer models)

Had another 40mm here till 9am this morning and a couple of mm during the day but mostly fine. The Brisbane sounding this morning revealed some mid level warming which has decreased cloud depth today (compared to Saturday).  Despite that the models and forecasts are going for some significant totals the next few days - hard to say where exactly will get the best at this stage.

Starting to look like SEQ is in for some heavy falls that has been discussed earlier on this thread. Once again the 7 day outlook is differentiating from previous forecasts. I would not be surprised if the said "showers" forecasted, turn into rain periods.

We have had light rain since 4.30 am EST, and the radar is showing some moderate to heavy falls to come, from the north of Balina to Caboolture.

The bom radar obs show only 20mm for ballina and Lismore but I dare say there out of order because we have a rain gauge and we have emptied it a few time from it being filled overflowing stage top =120mm emptied about 3times woaw allotta rain man.

Just looking at the Obs from BOM. Lismore has had about 44 mm since 9am, and they are saying Balina about 26mm since 9am.
Of interest though is NSW is on flood watch.

The statement from BOM is :

Flood Watch for NSW coastal rivers from the Queensland border to the Nambucca Valley
Issued at 9:31 AM on Monday the 30th of March 2009

Note: Flood Watch is a "heads up" for possible future flooding and is NOT a
Flood Warning [see note below].

A surface trough is deepening off the northern NSW coast which is expected to
produce around 50 to 100 millimetres of rain over the next 24 hours over the the
northern rivers and mid north coast.

This weather system has the potential to produce local and main river flooding
in the following catchments:

1. Tweed Valley - local and possibly some minor main river flooding
2. Richmond / Wilsons Valley - minor to moderate flooding
3. Brunswick Valley - minor to moderate flooding
4. Orara River - minor flooding
5. Coffs Creek - minor to moderate flooding
5. Bellinger Valley - moderate flooding
6. Nambucca Valley - minor flooding

Looks like more rain setting in as the week continues in SEQ. Looks like Northern NSW is in for a deluge over the next 24 hours, so keep safe. MB could be busy with SES.

Just did a run up to Brisbane and back. Nice steady rain when I left home this morning which cleared pretty much as we hit the gold coast. Plenty of low cloud around with the odd shower or two around Brisbane . Heading back home now and it hasnt changed. Tried to cross Pearces Creek Hall Road at Pearces Creek however the water is up to about 1 metre deep over the floodway. Had to turn around and go Houghlahans creek road instead. The Creek out our back paddock has broken its banks. Certainly looking very interesting if this heavy rain can keep going.

As James said, in Brisbane we have had just some good showers, watching the radar, the rain band seem to be hitting North Strady, it just cant seem to make its way across the Bay, and then shoots up the coast line.  The high jet stream is just not letting us have the needed rain. As I said in the last post, it looks like Wednesday is the forecasted rain for SEQ/Brisbane.

Coolangatta has been the best for QLD having 24.8mm since 9 am.

Latest 00z run of LAPS/MLAPS looks great for rain across the Northern Rivers/Mid North Coast and SE QLD. Around 100mm each day over most areas.

71mm since 9am here to 5.30pm 30/3 with some more large cumulus to the east. Only one site has topped 100mm since 9am today on the NSW flood site: Dunoon on 102mm and Corndale up to 99mm. Those two sites are not far N-NE of Lismore.

Stormboy, please indicate the duration of rainfall measured. I know Ballina has had far less today and last night as my mother is there and records rainfall too.

emptied how much exactly ?  It is still unclear and sounds like 3 x 120mm = 360mm !!!   Which means it must be getting more water in it than just from rain lol

Ballina Airport had 28mm to 9am and 52mm 9am to 8pm - half of which has fallen after 430pm

It seems to me that the boms obs are not running right we have a swimming pool that has been overflowing all day and our yard huh well just a huge deep puddle even my dad said without looking at the rain gauge at least more than 100mm has fallen and I agree. Just my thoughts

ps- whats up with byrons obs they never work for rainfall???

Blue skies this morning with cloud sitting off Moreton Island, just supposed to be a few showers today increasing to rain tomorrow. But what I found amazing, and something that Richary has touch on, was the system that brought all the rain, also gave the Gold Coast and Duranbah (The Tweed, probably Fingals+ down the coast a bit,) 3.9 to 4.1 swell. There was a lot of tow in surfing yesterday. The pictures were awesome. They predicted the same for today, but looking at the wave rider buoys it seems to have dropped of this morning.

I have posted the Obs from the wave rider bouys.

The reading on these charts are the HSIG readings or average height for the recorded period, if you go into the site you will see the Hmax, or highest recorded wave for the same period ( http://www.epa.qld.gov.au/environmental_management/coast_and_oceans/waves_and_storm_tides/wave_monitoring/ (http://www.epa.qld.gov.au/environmental_management/coast_and_oceans/waves_and_storm_tides/wave_monitoring/)) click onto the site you want to look at then go to the wave hight plot to see max waves.

There have been some very heavy falls along the Clarence Coast this morning and now in the Coffs Harbour hills, with 74mm at Red Hill in the past hour.

This weather system is supposed to move north tomorrow.

You really are getting a canning down there with this weather system. NSW has been issued a severe weather warning which states:

Top Priority for Immediate Broadcast
NSW SEVERE WEATHER WARNING
Flash Flooding, Damaging Surf, Locally Damaging Winds
For people in the
Sydney Metropolitan, Northern Rivers, Midnorth Coast and Hunter

Issued at 3:25 pm on Tuesday 31 March 2009

Synoptic Situation: 3:00 pm EDT Tuesday
A low pressure trough off the northern NSW coast is moving very slowly south and is forecast to develop further.

This is an update of the warning issued at 11:25 am Tuesday.
Very heavy rain may cause flash flooding in the Northern Rivers, Mid North Coast, Hunter and Sydney Metropolitan districts tonight and Wednesday. Note: rain has eased in most of the Northern Rivers district, but is expected to increase during Wednesday.

Damaging surf conditions, with waves exceeding 5 metres in the surf zone, are likely to produce significant beach erosion on the Mid North Coast, Hunter and Sydney between Smoky Cape and Port Hacking today.

Winds may average over 65 km/h in coastal areas of the Northern Rivers, Mid North Coast and Hunter, particularly with thunderstorms, with gusts in excess of 90 km/hr.

Emergency services advise do not enter flood water. Stay well clear of creeks, storm drains and causeways.

Emergency services advise you check your property regularly for erosion or inundation by sea water, and if necessary, raise goods and electrical items.

Surf Life Saving Australia recommends that you stay out of the water and stay well away from surf-exposed areas.

Emergency services advise you to keep clear of fallen power lines, stay indoors away from windows and keep children indoors.

A separate Flood Watch has been issued for NSW coastal rivers from the Queensland border to the Hunter, with Flood Warnings current for the Bellinger River, the Hastings River, Orara River and Coffs Creek at Coffs Harbour. Refer to warnings at www.bom.gov.au (http://) (http://) (http://) (http://) for updated information.

For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES [NSW and ACT] on telephone number 132 500.

The next warning is due to be issued by 10 pm Tuesday.

The ocean swell has been recorded as over 5M. The Brisbane wave rider Bouy (North Stradbroke Island) recently registered 4.6M.

Late edit: 4.6M wave swell is the HSIG reading or average swell height for that period. Just going through the records the Hmax, or highest recorded for the same period was of Brisbane was 8.1 M

There is severe flooding in Coffs Harbour CBD right now with the creek about the same level as the November 1996 event and it could go higher. The hills have received over 300mm of rain and it's still going. The 4 hour rainfall record for NSW has been broken with 309mm at Red Hill.

I have attached the hourly rainfall figures.

Besides Coffs there is major flooding along many of the Mid North Coast rivers as the convergence zone has remained in the same area most of today. Bellingen appears to have copped some of the worst of it again (following the mid Feb flood)

MAJOR FLOOD WARNING
FOR COFFS CREEK AT COFFS HARBOUR
Issued at 6:09 PM on Tuesday the 31st of March 2009

Flood Warning Number: 4

Heavy rain is still being recorded upstream of Coffs Harbour township with 80
millimeters recorded at Perry Drive (upstream of Coffs Harbour township).

At 6pm the level of Coffs Creek at the Grafton St Bridge was at 5.12 metres and
still rising.  Flood levels similar to the November 1996 are expected within the
next 2 hours.

However more heavy falls are forecast over the next few hours.  At this stage,
it is not possible to predict the flood peak because of uncertainty over how
much more rain will fall.

Predicted River Heights/Flows:

Coffs Creek - With further rain predicted rise close 5.4 metres between 7pm and
8 pm

MAJOR FLOOD WARNING
FOR THE BELLINGER VALLEY
Issued at 7:06 PM on Tuesday the 31st of March 2009

Flood Warning Number: 8

Further extreme rainfall of up to 195 millimetres has fallen in the Bellingen
Valley in the past 3 hours to 6pm.

Further moderate to heavy rain is forecast for the next 12 to 24 hours.

At this stage it is not possible to predict the flood peak because of
uncertainty over how much more rain will fall.

Predicted River Heights/Flows:
Thora: Reach 7 metres around midnight Tuesday  [Major Flooding] with further
rises possible.

Bellingen: Reach 8.7 metres around 10:00pm Tuesday [Major Flooding] with further
rises possible.

Repton: Reach 2.8 Metres [moderate Flooding] midnight Tuesday

Urunga: Reach 1.9 metres midnight Tuesday with minor to moderate flooding

I have just checked the Bureau of Meteorology Weather Stations around Coffs Harbour and 3 have recorded exceptional rainfalls for 31/3/2009 being:-

- Perry Drive Weather Station - 324 mm from 9 am to 9.30 pm which is 25.92 mm per hour for the period.
- Shepherds Lane Weather Station - 368 mm from 9 am to 9.30 pm which is 29.44 mm per hour for the period.
- Red Hill Weather Station - 414 mm from 9 am to 9.30 pm which is 33.12 mm per hour for the period.

A weather station just to the south being Coffs Harbour MO has recorded 91 mm in the same period.

Further a fall of 317 mm has occurred at Girralong and a fall of 271 mm has occurred at Bellingen. There have been big falls at Wooli (202 mm), 168 mm at Glenreagh and 128 mm at Dorrigo during the same period as well.

The area affected by the February floods have been affected again by this rain event.

ok what a day! I just got home from a mates..I was at the park beach plaza in Coffs until 4pm today and left to find SES and police directing traffic through detours I eventually wound up stranded up shepherds lane (just a couple of kilometers from Red Hill) for those who know coffs as my estate was under water and the road back out within 10-15 mins in either direction below was cut off..The photos below are from my house, thanks to my brother for taking them..it is really surreal driving through coffs tonight there are a lot of cars just left up gutters and beside the road some with hazard lights still flashing and no one around and parts of town are blacked out still, this was a crazy flash flood my brother took photos from home and the front and back yard around my house was just a river of water we were really lucky as it just began to lap at our front door when it started to subside..

Looked pretty nasty on the news tonight up there. My parents at Woolgoolga have recorded 150mm so far from it, not nearly as much as the areas a little bit south. Thos Red Hill figures are amazing with 444 mm for the 24 hours.
Title: RE: NSW and SE QLD Rain Event / Flash Flooding Coffs Harbour and Sunshine Coast :28 Mar - 7 Apr 2009
Post by: Harley Pearman on 02 April 2009, 01:24:57 PM
Auburn Council's Drainage and Development Engineer has calculated the Coffs Harbour rainfall event at a 1 in 100 year event based upon the following data from the following Bureau of Meteorology weather stations:-

Coffs Harbour - 31/3/2009 to 1/4/2009 (9 am to 9 am being a 24 hour period):

Perry Drive - 351 mm which is 14.62 mm per hour for that whole period.
Red Hill - 444 mm which is 18.5 mm mm per hour for that whole period.
Shepherds Lane 402 mm which is 16.75 mm per hour for that whole period.

Much of this as per my previous post had fallen in a 12.5 hour period from 9 am to 9.30 pm 31/3/2009.

Siva explained to me that the calculations are made for the whole 24 hour period and rainfall intensity during that period will vary. For the 24 hour period, the event rates as a 1 in 100 year event.

The exceptional falls are localised. In Coffs Harbour the three weather stations that recorded it are located in the north and west of the city. There is a range of hills running east to west along the northern side of Coffs Harbour and the exceptional falls have occurred along the southern slopes of that range (Orographic rain).

Areas south of Coffs Harbour had 161 mm.

Another area where big falls occurred was the Bellingen Valley and surrounds such as:-

Girralong 478 mm
Bellingen 395 mm
Dorrigo 264 mm.

Other weather stations in the vicinity have recorded:-

Spicketts Creek 401 mm
Cooks Creek 304 mm
Kooroowi 274 mm
Bowra Sugarloaf 253 mm

Interestingly Point Lookout at 1,563 metres in elevation to the west had a little over 100 mm for the period 31/3/09 to 1/4/09 being 9 am to 9 am.

It appears that the topography of the valley has again played a big part in the amounts that have fallen at specific weather stations. The heaviest falls in the valley have occurred in a small area around the town of Bellingen, SW of town (Cooks Creek), areas along the Kalang River including Spicketts Creek (SE) and nearby hills.

Areas outside the valley had much lighter totals.

I came across this site on the Bureau of Meteorology website recently. It allows plots of Intensity-Frequency-Duration for rainfall events based on historical data. Basically you can see in how often a rainfall event of a certain duration and intensity will happen.

http://www.bom.gov.au/hydro/has/ifd.shtml (http://www.bom.gov.au/hydro/has/ifd.shtml)

This system tells me that for the coords given for Coffs Harbour MO (I can't find Red Hill on my maps) that 97mm for an hour is a 100 year event. However 14.77mm/hour for 24 hours is also a 100 year event, which equates to under 360mm for the day so Coffs has certainly exceeded that with some of the readings. 444mm per day for Red Hill = 18.5 mm/hr.

Using Excel to extrapolate these figures shows the formula for this graph is years = 0.1601 times e to the power of (0.4434 times mm/hr). Plugging 18.5 mm/hr into that formula shows it is a once is 575 year event. (e is one of those weird numbers and is approximately  2.71828)

Interestingly on an annual basis you could expect a rainfall rate of 111mm/hr over a 5 minute period, or about 9mm falling in 5 minutes.

http://www.bom.gov.au/hydro/flood/nsw/midnorth.shtml (http://www.bom.gov.au/hydro/flood/nsw/midnorth.shtml)

North of Numbucca there is three red dots close together, run the mouse over them and you have Coffs Harbour, Red Hill and Perry Drive.
Red hill had 444 mm in 24 hours.

I hope that is what you were after, if not ignore this post, it will self destruct in 10 seconds.

Thanks Coltan. Shows the figures but unluckily doesn't click onto something that gives the coords of the weather station itself. I have no idea if that would change the results of the bureau graph or not.

enak - whereabouts is Red Hill located? I have all the topo maps for NSW but no luck finding it so far. If you have coords or where it is exactly in relation to Coffs I might be able to find it and re run the figures.

All I can find out, which is not really helping, is that Red Hill Station ID no 559016 is an Automatic station used only for rainfull. http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/cdo/about/sitedata.shtml (http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/cdo/about/sitedata.shtml)   This site allows you to place the ID of station and takes you to where it is. But you have to drop the 1st 5 and replace it with  a  0 in this situation,  ( 059016) The problem is it says the station is closed , but I assume it is still operating to gather the rainfull amounts over the last few days. Coffs Harbour ID is 59040 so I had to add a 0 (059040) in this case to take you to C/H site.

In Brisbane we are now getting the effects of the system that lashed NSW. It has been very windy and the rain is building. I dont think at this stage we will receive anywhere close to the rains as NSW. It is supposed to break some time today.

I have been looking at the Wave bouys, the swell off this front is quite awesome. Brisbane has Hmax of over 8 M this morning while the Gold coast has had a Hmax of over 9 M. The doppler wind for Brisbane is showing some 70 - 80KM/h wind gusts.

At about 12.15pm EST time SEQ has been put on severe weather alert.
The warning from BOMS is as follows:

TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST
SEVERE WEATHER WARNING
For dangerous surf, flash flooding and stream rises.
For the Southeast Coast district.
Issued at 12:15 pm on Thursday 2 April 2009

Synoptic Situation: A trough of low pressure lies across the Southeast Coast
district and is generating strong to gale force winds and heavy rain.

Wave heights have reached up to 5 metres on the Gold Coast and offshore from
Brisbane, a little smaller on the Sunshine Coast. These waves are creating very
dangerous conditions and causing erosion on exposed beaches between Double
Island Point and Point Danger.

Heavy rain areas are likely to cause flash flooding on the Sunshine Coast during
the day with recorded falls of up to 100mm in the last 6 hours. Rain is likely
to cause stream rises across the rest of the Southeast Coast district during the
day, especially in coastal parts.
The State Emergency Service advises that people in the affected area should:

* if near the coastline, stay well away from the water's edge
* avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters

It has been very wet and windy all day, I would assume some of the floodways and creeks will have begun to rise and flood from when I saw them at about 10.00AM, at that stage some were close to breaking their levies.

Some pretty heavy falls today throughout the SEQ.

Noosa and sunshine coast received the heaviest of the rain.
Around Noosa:

Black Pinch Road    425mm in 9.7 hours
Cooren Point          194mm in 9.3 hours
Boreen Point          223mm in 10 hours
Mount Tinbeerwah  218mm in 9.7 hours
Cooroy                 207mm in 9.8 hours

Maroochy area averaged around 135 mm in 9.0 hours

Through out various locations in Brisbane and the Gold Coast, falls ranged from approx. 40mm - 100+ mm in the last 9 hours.

The Strong winds this morning caused power outages due to fallen power lines affecting up to 5000 consumers. There was a massive ocean swell resulting in a yacht (two time handicap winner of the Sydney to Hobart race) to capsize, loose its mast and it motors to fail. A search was organised and once located, the skipper was winched of the stricken yacht and flown to hospital by the rescue chopper. They then lost sight of the yacht for an hour or so because of the bad weather. After reaching them the second time , the yacht is now finally being towed back to Laguana Bay after the two remaining members were winched on to the rescue chopper.

There is flood warnings issued for the Sunshine Coast and as at 7.42 pm EST we still have a current weather warning. The low causing this system is expected to continue its track north and so the rain should ease through out the night.

Col.

Some incredible damage at Kin Kin (NW of Noosa) on tonight's news. The power of a flash flood was very well illustrated seeing roads scoured and washed away and heavy vehicles rolled over and tangled up in debris.

Black Pinch Road Alert in the attached hourly rainfall figures is just south of Kin Kin.

In SEQ we have had several warnings of slow moving severe storms since about 2.00 pm.
As the latest warning posted by Stormboy, there is an unconfirmed report of rainfall at Jimboomba of 200mm in 2.5 hours. The storms are bringing very heavy rain and this will continue through out the next 2 days according to BOM

The news this evening had a full report of the flash flooding at Kin Kin as Michael Bath touched on previously, the locals were saying there was a wall of water that suddenly approached the town resulting in many scrambling for their lives onto the roof top of the local pub.

Last night I heard the locals talk about a 3M tsunami hit Kin Kin, so I googled the event and decided to post part of the news report from the Daily.com.au

Trickle to 3 metre tsunami in 20 Min's

The hinterland hamlet of Kin Kin was in shock yesterday after a three-metre wall of water crashed through its hotel on Thursday, sending staff and customers running for their lives and leaving furniture and heavy equipment strewn up to 200 metres away.

Witnesses said water started to creep across the bar floor during a torrential downpour, then in the space of only 20 minutes it rose rapidly, pouring through the open windows and eventually tearing the hotel's main doors off their hinges in what was described as a "tsunami".

Unfortunately one elderly women lost her life as the car she was driving, I believe trying to escape the floods, was washed away.

Some of the rainfalls through out the SEQ have been stagering over the last 48 hours. Today forecasters are predicting a further 100mm of rain to fall today.

Ummm ... I would have thought that a person was probably in the car and was hit by the wall of water as she passed near a bridge since the car was found in a creek 500 metres from a bridge and her body 1.5km downstream.

This is not uncommon when high rainfall falls in mountains and other areas miss out from the majority of the deluge but the valley they are in rises to a torrent as that run off moves downstream.

It seems not quite in this case, here is the article regarding the elderly women, I believe she may have  had the right intentions but under estimated the power of the water. I totally agree with your evaluation of what does happen in many cases. I have misunderstood an earlier suggestion from an article, that she was fleeing the floods, but it seems she was trying to avoid the floods in order to get " back home."

Story by Hannah Martin, from the Courier mail.

Tragically, an elderly local who lived next door to the hotel lost her life as she attempted to drive across a nearby swollen creek and get home during the downpour which hit the region on Thursday evening.

A body was found yesterday about 1.5km downstream from Paynes Creek Bridge, just outside Kin Kin. Police last night identified the dead woman as Margarida Jackson, 78, of Kin Kin.

Police said Mrs Jackson was on her way home from visiting her husband in the Cooroy Hospital when she attempted to cross the flooded Paynes Creek bridge.

It's believed she stopped to inspect the flooded bridge and waited some time before attempting to drive across.

Her car, a Subaru station wagon, was spotted about 150m from the bridge on Friday afternoon. It was partly submerged in the creek with the keys in the ignition.

The driver's seatbelt was disengaged and the driver-side window was wound down.

"It seems she tried to get out (of the car), but the current of the water was just too much," a local SES volunteer said yesterday. The tragedy shocked residents in the small community as they attempted to clean up their mud-coated town.

we have recieved a severe storm warning later this evening from Bom

For people in parts of the
LOCKYER VALLEY,
SOMERSET and
TOOWOOMBA Council Areas.

Issued at 8:07 pm Sunday, 5 April 2009.

The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 8:05 pm, severe thunderstorms were detected on weather radar near the area north of Gatton.

These thunderstorms are slow moving.

They are forecast to affect the area south of Esk and the area southwest of Esk by 8:35 pm and the area west of Esk and Lowood by 9:05 pm.

Very heavy rainfall and flash flooding are likely.

An unofficial rainfall report of 63mm in 1 hour was recorded just east of Toowoomba at around 7pm.
An unofficial rainfall report of 40mm in 15 minutes was recorded at Southbrook at around 6:30pm.

There has been a few rumbles through out the evening and late afternoon, but I think it more of that fact we are in for heavy rain once again, hey at least we are now on lower water restrictions.

Warwick Qld.

We are still getting humid days and lots of convection. Not much of the coastal rain made it's way here but we are still getting conditions the same as a month ago.

I took these today. Nothing impressive with the storms but thought you might like to see Warwick sundogs and a photo of the mist I am not 100% sure about what is happening there but it was taken a few hours before the sundogs.

Regards,
Chris.

Hi guys, (It's great to be back online again!)

What an impressive rain system that was! I was glued to the news each evening watching the flood reports etc.

I have a storm update from the Snowy Valley area. Last Friday night, (3rd April) I was in a monster storm at Tumut! The lightning was absolutely smashing into the Tumut plains region and it was slightly worrying as we had 70foot high trees towering above where we were staying! Definitely large lightning magnets. The rain was torrential in places, giving the Tumbarumba/Batlow area 120mm of much needed rainfall. The structure as the storms were pushing more Westerly was astounding! I cant confirm due to a partially obstructed view but there was what appeared to be a large shelf cloud on the northern side of the main updrafts. I was waiting inside the KFC at Tumut while the storm abated and didn't have my camera at hand? There were some spectacular crawlers on the rear of the two main rain cores later on as there was a nice split taking place to the south creating two large, dark and very ominous rain cores.

Really nice to see a high precip. storm in the mountains for a change though the view was somewhat obstructed.
On my way back to the Ridge for a few days then we'll be off traveling once again.

Kindest regards and take care,
Shauno
