Looks like some storms on wed in hunter and north of buladelah , but 850 winds not strong but 700 seemed okay ,

please shoot me down and tell me what you think

STW has been issued for parts of the Northern Rivers and Northern Tablelands for large hail and damaging winds.

There is a large storm gathering west of Kyogle at present - it will most likely head eastwards to the north of my location - though there should be a nice view in the webcam. Windshear is certainly better south of the border today with cells going all over the place in SE QLD.

Plenty of low level moisture today. Brisbane sounding very healthy too. Lower levels of moisture on the NT have curtailed activity there.

i can see the anvil in the webcam plus some way in the distance , grafton radar having issues at moment though

Hi Nick - yeah it looked good for a while, then that storm weakened and barely moved. Further weak cells developed along the ranges late afternoon / early evening before it all cleared.  Went out for a look at the weather in the Casino area with Rodney and here's a couple of highlights:

Convection is starting again in NE NSW and SE QLD with CJs popping up on the ranges.

An upper trough sits over the NE inland and a surface trough is advancing up the North Coast. Surface DPs are good in coastal parts and have very much improved over the ranges compared to yesterday. However, the shear is terrible - Brisbane sounding shows virtually none all the way up to 450hPa so cells will be pretty erratic and mostly short lived.

Quite nice mammatus display!

Was there a severe warning on the storm west of Coffs Harbour at the times of the pictures or later? Any reports?

It looks as though it was feeding on SE winds?

Hi Jimmy,

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Grafton at about the time of these photos. On the radar there were two storms heading in a NW direction with these photos being of the southern one. As you would have noted shear was really poor today so the storms weren't moving quickly and so I could watch the storm from my home (I don't have a license) for a long time. It appeared to go through phases of strengthening and weakening over this period with new pulses generating to its western side which unfortunately meant I lost sight of the base after a while. I only received light anvil rain in my location.

Great you were able to photograph the early development and spectacular mammatus Kane. I was pretty much stuck at home till late afternoon.

Anvils from the west spreading across with congestus on the Border Ranges - this later became a thunderstorm.

Was not expecting to chase at all as had some family commitments late arvo / early evening. Fortunately this was called off at the last minute, so headed to Wyrallah south of Lismore for a look at the storms coming up.

There was an shelf cloud structure forming along the N-NE side of the new updraft area, and a microburst south of this on a decaying storm. Thunder was constant but only saw a couple of CGs. I was a few km east of where Rodney took his first couple of photos.

The new storm was now over the Lismore Kyogle Road sort of area, so I decided to head west along the Bruxner Highway and watch the back of the storm. Regular powerful CGs hit around the southern flank of the storm and in the precipitation core (according to Rodney and Beck). It was a beautiful scene though difficult to capture the fast bolts. Video will have got them though : )

Moved to Casino area to watch the action slowly move to the north. There were also move storms to the south and southwest.

That was one hell of a fast moving storm - fancy trying to catch up with that one! Interesting timelapse - interesting seeing different behaviours of storms when they search for moisture and react to the various flows associated with them on low shear days.

We've just had multicellular storms around Narrabri (NSW North West Slopes and Plains) which delivered hail (<1cm), 4-16mm of rain and we're still getting some widespread rain now.

The lightning detector at work peaked at 400 strikes (CC + CG) over a 15 minute period, within 56km range.

There's also movies from two other webcams, but the essence of them is just the same.

This system wasn't moving much at all, I suspect some places just west of town would have received over an inch of very welcome rain.

Hi everyone, just a few images from the Jan 31st chase.Slow moving cells made it an interesting afternoon as I ducked in between two cells out the kyogle road to get out to the west side.In doing so in convoy with beck we were treated to an awesome period of Flangs really close Gunshot quality :).
          After getting over to the otherside we eventually spotted a nice sunlit rainbow(Whooo thought i was in Kansas) nah lol wishfull thinking, the cells in the afternoon were pumping out heaps of Cg's. Sadly as it got dark it became infrequent.Bumped into Michael Bath out on chase too :)

5.10pm by Harald Richter, BoM

For the past hour a feisty (not-so-little) storm has tried to entertain me on the warning desk. At 0440z (3:40pm EDT) the storm initiated NNW of Grafton and decided to remain quasi-stationary. Then it changed its mind and accelerated due north. Then it changed its mind again, and latched onto the Northern Rivers-Northern Tablelands district border before disconnecting by jogging NW. Now it has realised its mistake and moves back E towards the Northern Rivers.  All that said, it has remained in the state warning area. My guess - the storm is pushed N by an outflow and spins just a little bit.

7.00pm by Harald Richter, BoM

The capricious cell earlier has been reorganised into a severe bow echo churning northward just north of Casino/Lismore at 1900 EDT.  A weak transient storm-scale circulation passed over Lismore around 6:30pm, but the individual storms are pulsey and are falling short of supercellular.
