Title: NSW / S QLD storms 12 - 14 January 2007
Post by: Michael Bath on 13 January 2007, 01:03:47 AM
Quite widespread instability is forecast in NSW and SE QLD for today though moisture suggests Northern Tablelands and North West Slopes will be better. Saturday still appears to the best day for storms, then the target moves inland Sunday.

Storms are active in the Moree region at present. Plenty of lightning showing on the tracker.

GFS shows CAPE values of 2100 and LI of -5.8 for us at Narrabri by 11am!

However the action seems to be heading away at the moment. I guess we'll see what happens!

Good luck up that way. Personally I'll hang around Sydney with the trough and move up with it as planned. I am rather disappointed with the overall change in pattern. It seems the activity is surrounding a ridge.

Certainly will be hot enough I would suspect to break the cap but you would sometimes wonder from the various models where the actual ridge really is. I'll await the 18Z data.

You may find the action being on the ranges and perhaps northwest slopes or any wind change that occurs. Today is a rather difficult day to pinpoint where the best action may be given variations in upper level temperatures etc and the position of the surface trough/heating.

Also, it is not the best day to travel heat wize.

Got a good view from here of a cell just north of Pilliga trying to break the cap and now its through and growing fast. Doesn't look like anything on the RADAR yet, if anything the rain is contracting, but hopefully something will come of it.

Can't see any detail in the storms to the NW due to lower level cloud and rain.

I just got back from a local chase around Penrith as a severe cell came off the mountains. It had some nice LP type structure and it also had pronounced base rotation for a period. Got a lot of good pics too. Awesome to finally get an organised cell in western Sydney after such a long break.

Hi guys,

I was on that Penrith cell from when it exploded. I have some awesome timelapse of it. I was situated at Castlereagh and when the new updraft took off, I knew I was in business. It exploded like any other LP supercell I had observed in the past. And the dying stage was great with the classic base shrinking upwards.

I ended up getting to Muswellbrook minus one kangaroo. I knew the odds were against me but within the last 10km of Muswellbrook and with my hopes high that there was car say 500m up the road 'perhaps' scaring it off and lights on low beam, out it came unhindered straight in front of my vehicle. I sustained less damage than the roo itself I would suspect most likely killed instantly.

(Not to start any threads on the kangaroo situation so please do not comment off topic here, but the kangaroo situation is the worst I have seen it in all the years I have been chasing. When it is evening, consider calling it a night in the nearest town).

I was awoken from  an afternoon nap by the unfamiliar sound of deep rumbles to the west. 3pm, and a developing storm out penrith way revealed a well defined anvil rim extending like a blanket over parramatta out to the coast. overhead features of well defined mammatus were complimented by some structure over the cell core in the form of a brief display of an inflow band.  So as Jeff had described earlier, the storm certainly displayed some decent structure. It did dissipate quite quickly after 4pm. Instability in the atmosphere was still evident around 5pm with  the northern sky again  displaying  some nice downward convection in the form of mammatus offset by some castellanus to the west.
Sunset revealed further decaying mammatus clouds and fibrous anvil remnants over the coast  to our east.  To the western sky and the area between Blacktown and Penrith a cell was developing with a high base but not much definition in the base.  The onset of twilight though, exposed an intra-cloud flash of sheet lightning. Well that was the trigger to get this dormant storm photographer into go mode. A reserve near home was my best vantage point to capture the lightning which by now, 8pm was becoming quite active. It was in an arc between Blacktown and Castle Hill. Some lovely c.g's around blacktown and anvil spikes to the north gave way to further cg's between the Hills district  and Hornsby. Strikes were very brief with little or no pulsing. Rain was disappointing with just a few spots out of the anvil. Lightning was frequent, every 2-3 seconds . This was a welcome event in a rather passive storm season thus far .The day's features certainly proved that our atmosphere is alive and still dynamic , albeit too briefly. Looking forward to seeing your photographic efforts from the day too Jeff,   Cheers, Con.

G'day Con,

I wish I was where you were on sunset as I couldn't get out of rain! I went up onto a vantage point nearby with my wife and within 2 minutes of being there we had a bolt go right over our heads and strike behind us! I scared us back into the car and after that it was a battle trying to keep the lens dry which I eventually lost. But to compensate I got a few shots and the lightning here was superb to say the least. We were positioned right in the middle of two developing cells that dropped plenty of amazing branched CG's.

Jeff.

Hi Gang,

    anyone heading out today ?

Wife, daughter and I are going to target the Mudgee region.  from there we can decide  whether we need to be
a bit further north, south or west as things hopefully develope in the afternoon.

Very nice looking LP and great lightning shots Jeff  :) That LP went right over Blaxland according to radar. I havent heard from my parents yet whether there was any hail or damaging wind from this storm.

I hope Jimmy managed to get amongst those very lightning active storms over the Northern Tablelands this afternoon.

Jeff, Clarity and contrast are excellent in those captures  , great shades of tonal subtlety and colour range in the LP and the lightning considering the time of capture.  The lake foreground  and clear horizon for the final LP shot would be a top spot to photograph Comet Macnought tonight and tomorrow after sunset too.  Cheers Con.

Got back from three days of chasing the Northern Tablelands / NW Slopes and Plains, Darling Downs and Granite Belt at 3am today.   Left Lismore area with Rodney 1pm Friday for chasing around Tenterfield area. Dave Ellem joined us a bit later, then he left to go south Sat lunch time.

Rodney and I met with Jimmy 1pm Sat at Deepwater where he abandoned his car which was having auto transmission problems. Chased the storms from Deepwater NW to Texas then north to Millmerran where we stayed Sat night. Sunday chasing from there to Goondiwindi then long drive back last night.

Will post a chase report and include photos soon! Has been an awesome 3 days ! :)

Hi all well I havn't fallen asleep yet from  only a short sleep this morning  after getting back at 3am :) up at 630am and off to work at 7 am.
After leaving The Northern Rivers district again this 2006/2007 seasion(a few times so far) to go Chasing with Mb, picked up Jd at Deepwater. Had an amazing 1430km trip seen a fair few storms along the way.The journey together and what was been seen visually etc was well worth the effort to get out of the town and go for a cruise and see a few more storms ahhhhh SDS cured for another few days anyway.
Interesting High Cape ,High Moisture ,low Shear  setups makes for some easy to navigate Chasing. Here are my Fav pictures and Thankyou to James Chambers, Jeff Higgins and Nick for Obs/Sat/Radar updates very much apreciated as no wireless broadband capable yet :) Go NSW! Go QLD!

Departed Lismore area about 1pm Friday 12th with Rodney Wallbridge, targeting the Tenterfield area. Arrived there after 3pm with convection only really just kicking off.

We observed storms developing to the SE round to the SW from a location just west of Mount McKenzie. There were some impressive updrafts around.

Moved to the Mount McKenzie lookout after Dave Ellem met up with us. A severe looking storm passed just to the east-southeast of Tenterfield. CGs were fairly regular in this cell while it developed a shelf cloud structure.

Things were cluttered for a while so booked a motel then moved west to observe new development.

We remained (mostly) outside the precipitation areas and enjoyed several thunderstorms moving northwards along the ranges.

Saturday 13th January was expected to be the main chase day of the "long weekend" of chasing. We left Tenterfield and moved to a spot southwest of Deepwater. Dave left about noon to meet up with James Harris and Daniel Weatherhead at Glen Innes. At this point we heard from Jimmy who had car troubles so arranged to meet him at Dundee.

Larger view: http://australiasevereweather.com/temp/forum/photos/2007011301.jpg

The chase soon kicked off near Deepwater where strong convection initiated.

Larger view: http://australiasevereweather.com/temp/forum/photos/2007011302.jpg

Surprisingly little CG activity occurred with this early development despite the strong appearance. It was again a day of north to northwest steering winds, but unfortunately so were the anvils.

Larger view: http://australiasevereweather.com/temp/forum/photos/2007011303.jpg

Larger view: http://australiasevereweather.com/temp/forum/photos/2007011304.jpg

Things became cluttered along the ranges so the chase continued northwest along a very good gravel road that links Emmaville with Bonshaw.

By the time we reached the Bruxner Highway at 5pm, storms were again quite spectacular. Strong convection was occurring to the north and southwest, while a severe storm developed to the east. This eastern cell was the main show at first with frequent CGs and a large rain free base. A green tinge was very apparent, along with hail shafts on the southwest flank.

Outflow eventually took over but this helped to strengthen the other storm to our southwest - now spreading round to the northwest.

Larger view: http://australiasevereweather.com/temp/forum/photos/2007011310.jpg

A very impressive microburst was observed - probably the most dramatic I've witnessed. Along with that, frequent CGs were hitting nearby.

Larger view: http://australiasevereweather.com/temp/forum/photos/2007011311.jpg

We knew we had to keep pressing north as the local area was spent energy wise. We drove north through the precipitation and strong winds through Bonshaw then on to Texas.

The hot humid air north of these storms was fuelling the line as it spread northwards. A massive rain free base with CGs was following us during the drive to Inglewood.

More cells had kicked up ahead of this and begun to produce very dramatic CGs from the high bases. The drive through trees was frustrated before we found a great location half way to Millmerran.

The sunset lit CGs were just awesome, and so frequent !

After this cell died off the chase continued to Millmerran. Massive anvil crawler lightning were CGs were lightning up the sky !   After booking the only motel room left in town, we eventually found a spot inside a hanger at the local air strip (there was still some light rain persisting).

A cell somewhere west of town was producing an impressive show.

Larger view: http://australiasevereweather.com/temp/forum/photos/2007011317.jpg

Later on, another storm cluster well to the north (probably near Dalby) caught our attention. Lightning was going ballistic - several per second, though we could mainly see anvil zits and in-cloud stuff rather than CGs.

Sunday 13th was a testing day. We had expected storms to develop on the Western Downs but it ended up being further west in the Granite Belt and beyond.

It was a long wait for Rodney, Jimmy and me at Millmerran under humid and hazy conditions with scattered cumulus from the north. We took off along the Goondiwindi Road after receiving some radar information.

A strong storm formed about 60ks WSW of Millmerran and gave us a bit of a show before it weakened.

Larger view: http://australiasevereweather.com/temp/forum/photos/2007011402.jpg

The decision was made to commit to the longer drive so was continued WSW. A cluster of storms had formed north of Moree and was slowly advancing into Queensland.

Larger view: http://australiasevereweather.com/temp/forum/photos/2007011403.jpg

By 6pm we had found a good location about 40ks north of Goondiwindi.

There were several cells active at any one time with CGs occurring fairly frequently.

The setting sun and high bases with microbursts provided a spectacular display for nearly two hours.

A few spits of rain hit just as the best CGs starting to punch down. Several very close bolts hit between 2ks and 500 metres of us. Fortunately several lovely images were captured before the rain hit !

Back towards the east, it looked like dust was shotting across the road in front, so we investigated, but this turned out to by torrential rain and hail from a microburst.  Quite a bit of fun was had as the sacred Rav4 was hit by hail to about 1.5cm, rain that reduced visibility to metres, and flangs !

After this the anvil crawlers started. We drove south about 30km to get out of the persistent light rain. The anvil shield was massive.  The anvil crawler show - which included several CGs too - was certainly up there with the best !

Wow MB that micro burst is one of the best i've ever seen captured on camera.

And tell Rodney that a Rav 4 can handle hailstones to about 4cm before it leaves slight dents. I've twice had mine in storms that produced 4cm hail which left only micro dents that are near impossible to see.

Hi Jeff,

I did tell Rodney about 4cm interactions with your vehicle. I must admit we were surprised he was courageous to go through 1cm hail or so - two passes:)

I certainly enjoyed the chase and meeting with Michael and Rodney. It was great fun and certainly more than suffucient opportunities for lightning photography. Pity we had to head back Sunday night - there would have been more opportuities closer to the storm including anvil crawlers.

I am processing my images (no cropping though) and they will be available when I get a chance.

I am impressed that storms continue to develop days at a time. And at least Sydney copped a dose on the 12th January

January 13th 2007

Rather than show a repeat of the same images posted by Michael and Rodney, I will show a few. Thanks for those reports Michael and Rodney - makes these easy for me.

Yes an awesome collection of excellent pics there Michael and Jimmy!!!  - I really like the way in which you guys capture the whole thing from cumulus field all the way through to nocturnal crawlers. Have not had much opportunity to see that entire process basically for a few years now...:(   Interesting that the convection with this system produced the same variety of 'interesting' lightning throughout......down here in Sydney we saw a lot of crawlers and beautiful 'lazy' bolts on the Friday (12th).

Can't comment on the right mover Jimmy - did not see radar and cannot really make out much from the photo you posted.

Breathtaking images there Jimmy, Michael and Rodney,
Wonderful colours in the lightning shots around twilight, the evening shot jimmy, of the lightning travelling parallel to the earth and then returning to the cloud base is only one of two i have seen . The other I captured over Tamworth . Spot on timing for the microburst, curious to know the downward velocity of that event considering your animated realtime captures. Yes, the LP supercell mammatus umbrella certainly gave the Sydney basin a taste things to come, I hope, Cheers and well done again, Con.

Great images there MB and JD. Love that last set of lightning pics JD!  MB - some of your shots looked identical to mine - and we were 200kms apart!  Love the Rav4 with precip curtain and sunlit cgs!

Looked like you guys got the better of the structure on Saturday. From where we were, the storms were quite powerful and the atmosphere was keyed with energy, except the orientation of the anvils were killing the storms as they moved into areas that had been under anvil rain for nearly 2 hours. It meant that the areas NW of the storms were always going to be far more explosive. It was nice to catchup with Dave and explore the lovely NT's. If we didn't have to drive 8 hours back to Sydney I think we would've ended up in QLD too.

We scored some developing storms just west of Uralla on the way, which were some of the most lightning active storms I have seen in years (thats not saying too much tho..) - however most of the flashes were cc's or sheeted.

Friday was a much better day for us - much more like we thought the setup for Saturday was going to be.

I will post some pics shortly - we are just about to release the new version of SSC which will help make it easier to update content and manage the photos that we have.

Thanks for the discussion.

Hi Dann,

Great you got some action down near Glen Innes. We could not see the base but the anvil was spectacular and we watched it closely. We almost ended up down that way. We headed a little more inland and then saw the base and finally NW away from the anvil complex.

I know what you mean about having to return to Sydney. Anyway, I wished we had met up.

David, here are the radar animations:

That cell near Putty looks likely to be the one.

Sorry - didn't see your pics Rod and Jeff - great work all round!! Its amazing to think that you three (JD, MB, RW) were watching the same storms and you get so many different shots (lightning especially).

Anyway congrats!

Hi Nick,

Why couldn't you set up this on a web page perhaps or can Michael or someone set it up on our webpage?  I will delete this message once it has gone through.

Hi all,
I have some "rather late" pictures to post from this (the 12th) amazing day for structured storms! We had received a beaut little LP cell during the day that I'd love to show. There were also great microbursts with this cell and the hail was 2cm in size! This was the first time I had taken my father out with me. I remember it was pretty active and a bit dangerous with numerous cannoning CG firing down around us (a few of these I caught on DV) I apologize for not posting any specifics about the numbers etc. but it was a fair while ago lol! I can remember that it was pushing over 40Âșc that day and the shear was pretty good as evident in the structure. This cell approached town from the SE and had a large backsheared anvil. We also had a subsequent storm that developed a nice little wall cloud out on the Cumborah plains that night at around 9pm. I had got some of my best lightning shots to date from that storm.

Here's the first storm of the day.
Cheers,
Shauno

Hi Jimmy...I have never seen lightning streak that close to the ground horizontal! What a superb image!  I did see one similar last year but only small - this image just blew me away.  My daughter saw it and went Whoa!  She said I should nick it and put on my website - to which I replied 'No, only with permission!'

Fantastic images by all....salivating as I view.

Mike,

She can shove it with a link on the website to ASW if she wishes. That was one hell of a wierd bolt.

I wouldn't dream of doing it without a link JD - certainly a very unique bolt that just seems to - well i don't know!
