I have video including timelapse sequences.
Actually Jimmy I would think that the shear was a more key ingredient here...its been missing for much of the season and every time it pops its head up suddenly there are supercells.
A crazy right moving storm just came through Coffs. I was taking shots of the lighting with a couple of other guys from Coffs and witnessed quite an amazing microburst at around midnight! Was quite a sight to see and hear! I'll upload some photos tomorrow :)
Nice stuff there james, I really like that structure in the last pic...but can't work out for the life of me the perspective...is that the left hand wall of the mesocyclone with inflow banding coming from the left?
Had intense power packed cell hit us at Bracken Ridge. Very quick but it had extremely strong winds.
Some amazing reports from a couple of chasers on the WZ forum. Waiting to see photos and reports later tonight and tomorrow.
The Gold Coast had a waterspout from the cell that passed through around 4.00pm this afternoon.
do you think this is a waterspout formed from water up or a tornado formed from a meso over water from the cloud base down
i cant tell the difference but was wondering if you knew [ its not like its as easy as the Sydney to Hobart tornado to identify]
Ok here we go, from the Merriwa to Tamworth region:

Many great storms pics here, esp. inluding that footage of Wols near Penrith with the storm looming almost overhead, but Shane (and Phil) are in the gold medal position, Australian edition, in 2010!!! -- That is just a beautiful sculpted supercell up near Gunnedah, actually the best structure I have seen anywhere, outside of the US, for quite some time. May as well both hang up the tripod now and retire Smiley Great stuff guys.
Cold air from the south in an upper level trough and widespread cloud cover has caused temperatures across the southeast to plummet. On Saturday, day time temperatures across Victoria, South Australia and parts of NSW were around 5 and 17 degrees below average. In South Australia Moomba Airport just reached 19 degrees, 17 below average. This is 3 degrees colder than their December minimum average. Elsewhere the places were in the Victorian Alps where temperatures were as cold as those seen in October. Mount Buller only managed to reach 2 degrees, 13 below average. Falls Creek warmed to just 3 degrees, the coldest it has been in December for 19 years. Wind gusts on the Alps around 50 to 70 km/h made temperatures feel more like minus 7! Temperatures are forecast to stay down over the next 48 hours in the southeast, bringing the potential for snow flurries on higher ground. Overnight on Sunday, temperatures are predicted to step below zero with Mount Hothom set to drop to minus 2. With temperatures this low, precipitation is likely to fall as snow to as low as 1200m. Temperatures are set to return to around average by mid-week in time for Christmas. |
More likely to be a mesovortice/mesocyclonic return or perhaps a particularly strong microburst within the storm itself. Generally with 128km radar doppler and given the scan height at that range you are unlikely to see a tornadic signature (just due to sheer scale, thing about how many pixels on that map represent a km), and the are usually more tight and confined on our radars when they do produce them.
Won't say much about the Supercell that hit Penrith last Thursday except that it's radar signiture was awesome! Most powerfull storm i've seen in western Sydney for quite some time. Not as big hail as Blacktown supercell but more powerfull overall from my perspective.Nice footage of the hail, and welcome back Jeff!

Fantastic supercell structure. Lovely work from the rest of you guys as well! I dont care what anybody says, it was outbreak of the season as far as im concerned and not just NSW.
