The rain has not stopped here all night with my station reading 42mm since 0:00 and Byron bay is on 84mm as well as coffs harbor on 86mm a flood severe weather warning has been issued from bom. more heavy rain is coming from the tough.

Three locations have topped 100mm overnight (23 hour falls to 9am [given daylight savings started]): 117mm at Coffs Harbour(Perry Drive) and Byron Bay (Jacaranda Drive) 198mm and nearby Belongil Creek 152mm
53mm here to 9am most of which fell between 4am and 6am today.
The Flash flood warning probably should have been issued earlier!

Weather Situation
A slow moving trough lies along the northern NSW coast as an upper level trough approaches.
Showers and isolated thunderstorms may lead to local flooding for the Northern Rivers and Mid North Coast forecast districts over the next 24 hours.

A very large area of rain is developing over Tweed heads area and is moving south, at the moment the rain is light but has not stopped despite the radar showing nothing on us, it will be interesting to see if this event is similar to the one we had 2 years ago when we had heavy rain but Bellinger flooded.

Sydney Showers 2/3 October 2010
The wet weather is also occurring across Sydney and the Central Coast. In the case of Sydney, some heavy showers are occurring but are largely hit and miss.
Up until 9 am 3/10/2010, 44 mm had fallen at the Royal National Park followed by 32 mm at Penrith and 31 mm at Lucas Heights. On the other hand, only 1 mm had fallen at Abbotsford (Inner West) and 6 mm at Seven Hills. Heavier falls have been concentrated within small areas but generally much of the city had from 6 mm to 27 mm.
From 9 am to 3 pm 3/10/10, rainfalls vary between 1 mm and 10 mm as brief showers (Some heavy) sweep in from the North East. Bringelly had recorded 10 mm during this time. It is cloudy here in Sydney with various cloud formations visible ranging from Cirrus, alto stratus, stratus, some nimbo stratus at times and even embedded cumulonimbus have been seen today. Occasionally sunny breaks have occurred. Generally showers are hit and miss again.

Looks like phase 2 is beginning with the rain a little eased it is now redeveloping near the Maroochydore/Caloundra area and is moving south with Tweed close to 50mm Byron at 42mm and Coffs near 45mm.
My station since 00:00 70.2mm but since 9am 22.2mm

The rain has really pumped up this last hour with 13mm this hour bringing the total since 0:00 to 88mm

Cold and wet for northern coastal NSW

A severe weather warning for flash flooding has been issued for the Northern Rivers and the Mid North Coast.
A trough along the northern NSW coast and an inland trough are working together to generate copious amounts of rainfall for the Northern Rivers and the Mid North Coast.
In the 24 hours to 9am, Coffs Harbour received 90 mm of rain in the gauge, which is the highest daily rainfall total there since November last year.
Cape Byron received a 24 hour rainfall total of 83 mm, which is their highest daily total for October in at least seven years of records.
The rain is continuing to fall over Northern coastal NSW today and has already pushed Cape Byron above its wettest October total on record (for seven years of records).
Rain and showers have also kept temperatures well below average with Evans Head having it's coldest October day since 2003.
The rain will continue tomorrow in moist gusty easterly winds. There is a good chance of flooding in parts due to the already soaked ground being deluged with yet more water.
The rain should ease on Tuesday but wetter than average conditions are likely to persist over Spring and into Summer due to La Nina conditions.

Yesterday and today in Sydney we have had at times quite heavy showers sweeping in from the NE, unusual in itself. They have generally intensified over land. While at home at Rydalmere I have only had about 20mm all up, most has fallen in brief intense bursts. The first at 10am yesterday woke me up, and it has been on and off since. It is quite localised though, this afternoon we had an absolute downpour while the footy grand final about 4km away at Homebush got almost nothing, 30 minutes later they copped one while we a light shower. The rain when it comes is quite heavy, but only lasts a few minutes.
My father if Woolgoolga near Coffs Harbour reckons they have about 100mm in the guage since it started.

Just woke up now from a huge CRASH a 70km wind blew over a tree onto our fence and broke it also 145.5mm here and Michael Baths place going nuts with 190mm that is huge it seems to be from an stationary cell.

I just emptied 219mm out of my BoM gauge ! Seems to be the highest total on the North Coast. It really poured between 1am and 3am but didn't expect that much. The AWS had a max rain rate of 185mm/hr and a 1 hour rainfall amount of 113mm - the highest it's ever got to.

I remember i was just sitting there going holy hell MB is getting slammed and at the same time a cell came from Byron bay delivering thunder and then a blackout about 3:10am that lasted until 5am apparently a felled tree again!
At the moment huge line of rain just east from us (can hear the thunder in it) just hope it misses us
177.8mm of rain here with Ballina AP on 155mm yamba a staggering 223mm and 205 at Byron

Wow it looks like this system sure did deliver soo much rain i hope anyone in flood waters are safe, looks like many areas exceeded 100mm plese find the links to the Brisbane and grafton radars note brisbane went down at 1am

It's interesting you observed thunder Antonio. I'm surprised I did not observe any here, and I know I was mostly awake during the heavy rain - maybe it was too heavy to hear !!
The Wilsons River at Eltham is approaching 9 metres (8.81m at 11am) which is similar to the Jan 2008 flood, but 1 metre below the peak during the May 2009 flood.
Yeah, it's annoying Stapylton was down during the intense rain.

Well there was LOUD thunder also a flash every few seconds it was intense it was the cell that came from byron bay actually

The photos of the floods are quite spectacular.
I had noted Sunday and early today slow moving rain cells on the north coast and some very large rainfall totals on the north coast as well as the Bellinger Valley. By 6 am this morning, I was aware of some rainfall totals between 150 and 200 mm on the New South Wales North Coast.
Sydney rainfall totals 4/10/2010 from BOM Weather station sites
Overnight some heavier rainfall totals for the Sydney area occurred. Interestingly, the heaviest falls have occurred towards the Camden / Campbelltown area or south west Sydney with 36 mm at Bringelly, 29 mm at Badgereys Creek and other falls of between 20 and 30 mm occurring.
Late Sunday and early Monday a burst of heavy showers across Blacktown / Parramatta region pushed rainfall totals to between 10 and 20 mm with a further 1 to 5 mm falling from 9 am to 11 am. For the first 4 days of October to 1 pm 4/10/2010, cumulative rainfall totals are becoming significant for October such as:-
Camden 40 mm.
Campbelltown 44.6 mm
Penrith 42.2 mm.
It has been a cool, cloudy and wet start to October with higher rainfall totals across the inland suburbs than across the coastal suburbs.

It appears more rain could develop with this low as rain from the southeast could spew itself back up. attached VIS looks like there is a eye of the low.

The heavy rain and high tide this afternoon/evening has closed the Pacific Highway in the NSW Mid North Coast. The road is shut in both directions at Corindi Beach, north of Coffs Harbour, due to high tide at Blackadder Creek which isn't expected to subside for at least two hours.
Seemingly reports indicate that traffic is banked up for 15KM South bound and approx 4 KM North bound.
Antonio I would not classify that as eye, but I understand what you mean.

Oh i understand but to me anyway the patch of clear with cloud all around looked like an eye (silly me) some light costal showers are developing from tweed down the coast with drizzle hitting us as i type the frogs are going nuts they love it, so since i am new to this is it because of La Nina that these rain events are so intense?

Had another 8mm here in the past 24 hours mainly from drizzle. Most of this does not show up on the radars.
Areas from Yamba to the Nambucca had the best falls in the past 24 hours. Highest appears to be 195mm at Minnie Water on the coast east of Grafton.
