Title: S.A. Vic. NSW: Rain and storm event 9-10 September
Post by: Taipan on 10 September 2010, 01:59:11 AM
Hey all,
Looking at radar and lightning tracker, there is currently a system of storms moving from east of Adelaide, heading south-east towards Victoria. These storms look to be quite lighning active. Hoping they continue through the day and make it down into the Melbourne area.

Cheers,
Chris.

I thought I would add this one to the thread, here in QLD there is a prevalent rain band heading in from the west that is producing a couple of storms. The GFS models don't seem to indicate anything spectacular from this event, only around the 10mm mark or so. BOM have issued a warning at 4.30PM for South central QLD.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING
for DAMAGING WIND, FLASH FLOODING and LARGE HAILSTONES

For people in parts of the
Maranoa and Warrego Forecast District.

Issued at 4:30 pm Thursday, 9 September 2010.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds, very heavy rainfall, flash flooding and large hailstones in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Augathella.

Hi guys,

Nice to see some action around the place!

We actually had 5-6 decent CG hit town on the back end of all the rain that moved through here yesterday. Heard the first rumbles around 11pm and saw some extremely bright CG's fire down in town. I was temporarily blinded by a very close CG at 11:40pm! I think it was only a few hundred metres away at most. The resulting crack of thunder shook the entire house!

I wasn't game to head out into it with the camera as the rain was very heavy and the lightning had soon stopped shortly after midnight.

I will grab some rain totals for the last 24hrs.

Kindest regards.

Some more decent rainfall totals in the upper Gwydir and Macintyre/Severn River catchments of NE NSW last night with totals 60 to 75mm. This is on top of three other flood events in the past 30 days. This flood number 4 in a month is likely to see major flooding at Ashford and surrounds.

Sydney and the Hunter were severe thunderstorm warned this afternoon for damaging winds. Not a good EWN message to get on the phone when I was on a rooftop at Liverpool, well good to know but potentially not good for the job.

Luckily only one small squall while we were there with a bit of wind to about 60 kph then it passed, and another one hit a bit stronger about 4pm as we were leaving. Didn't see any lightning at any stage though, by the time I got home stormtracker was showing quite a bit but well offshore by that time.

Hi all,

Our 24hr total for 9am on the 9th to 9am on the 10th of September was 15mm. Most of this would have come with the minor storm at 11:30pm EST on Thursday night (the 9th).

Take care.
