Hi everyone,

A low pressure trough slowly moved eastwards over Victoria on Sunday and as a result some areas experienced thunderstorms, some severe, and squalls. I was positioned close to home in the Yarra Valley and decided to photograph structure on this day, as opposed to chasing. I did however pursue a cell that was showing signs of being quite organised and started to develop a wall cloud. This occurred between Coldstream and Gruyere and I followed the cell before it disappeared from view towards Healesville. Although the cell started to develop a weak inflow band (see image taken looking north, band visible on NW flank)  I suspect it failed to develop further but I am yet to analyse radar loops.  The image is here.

I have processed a few images form the day, linked below, many more to assess and I have video to look at as well. I will post links to further images and footage if I think it’s worthy, cheers and thanks.

Hi David.
Was wating radar EXPLODE late last night, was an awesome looking storm/s that impacted the Melb area... 88mm in 3 hours at the Viewbank/Bullen AWS is awesome. I have also read reports of over 100mm falling in other parts in those same few hours! Quite an amazing nocturnal storm!

The activity didnt stall until 1.30 when the first lot passed around me (i think) and it all slowed down and didnt do alot but at 3 there was more lightning coming up and it was awesome. I was dead tired and (cant believe it) slept through what woke my housemates up. bugger. I cant wait for your reports on it all, photos, weatherzone captures etc, it was so awesome. Anyway, enthusiasm aside I have a couple of things for you that you may have seen. On the second floor of my house I had a view of the whole sky and storms approaching...what does it mean when the lightning travels up? what are the things that flare at the top called like a lightning tornado shooting up from the clouds (kind of)? did you guys ever discover why we get green, orange or purple lightning? is it because of the heat of the strike? does the lightning cause the hail, type, frequency? or is it something else that contributes to its size? ok well thanks for listening and you dont have to answer ill read it in your posts etc. and on your sites. your all great, thank you and im taping ACA. : ) Catherine & Belle in Frankston _________________________________________________________________ Get less junk mail with ninemsn Premium. The Melbourne storm was covered on NZ   TV news this evening.  A "once in a lifetime storm" dumped 150mm
in two hours over Melbourne's E and N suburbs.  Saw footage of cars in water and flooded homes and lightning.

Hi Paul :-)

It is a common belief that lightning decends from cloud to ground first, however this is not so and is in fact, the reverse.

Slow motion video shows a very faint leader ascending from the ground pole what ever that may be, including human, and the return stroke follows more or less the same path, back and forward many times and we call that the "lightning  flash" and that is what we observe. The intial stroke upwards is very faint and is masked by the bright return flash. Only a video cam shows this phenomina in detail  because the sequence is so quick that the human eye cannot detect it.  It is also one reason that being in the open during a thunderstorm is a bad idea because  one (you) could become the intial electrical pole and conducts the charge upwards. Anyone who has experience a phenominum such as "St.Elmos Fire"knows this effect well.

Hoping this helps you

Maybe this message will take a day or two to get through as well.

Re people being lightning conductors.

I have flat straight hair and on a number of occasions near a storm my hair has risen.  strands of hair stand up. that makes
you realise the scale of the electric field near a thunderstorm.

For anyone interested (and increibly bored!) I have the A Current Affair crew with me today and the interview goes to air tonight. Also a radio interview on 774 ABC Radio here in Melbourne around 1.45 p.m. Focusing on past 24 hours + footage etc. By the way, have had incredible weather here as everyone would know by now, will compile reports (eventually) and post a link here.

I have also read reports of over 100mm falling in other = > parts in those same few hours! Quite an amazing nocturnal storm! > > Simon > www.canberra-wx.com I was right in the middle of the most intense rain (at Heidelberg). I don't have a gauge myself (nowhere to put it), but several other gauges within 5km, in all directions, were in the 100-110mm range so I think it reasonable to assume that Heidelberg topped 100 too. (I have also been reminded by my colleagues that it is apparently a long-standing tradition in the Climate Analysis Section that anyone who gets 100mm has to buy the rest of the section a drink :-) The damage in Heidelberg was less extensive than in Fairfield and Northcote, probably because it's a hillier suburb which assists with drainage. I thought my own place (which is quite elevated) had got out unscathed, but got home last night to discover that some moisture had penetrated the walls and shorted out an electrical circuit, nothing too serious compared with a lot of others. The bowling club at the bottom of the gully 100m away has all its greens 5-10cm deep in mud. There were media reports yesterday of a bowling club suffering $2 million damage, but they didn't say where - not impossible it could be this one (for a damage bill of that size, presumably the walls would have had to have suffered structural damage severe enough for the building to have to be demolished). I didn't see evidence of such severe damage but then I didn't get that close. The heavy rain was almost continuous from just before midnight until about 1.50 a.m., with several separate waves of hail mixed in with the rain. Not much wind by the standards of severe thunderstorms. Those of you who are on Weatherzone will have seen this already, but if you took a reading yourself, especially if it's 50mm+, we'd appreciate it if you could send me details so we can use it to help in the post-event analysis (we'll need a location as well - Melway reference probably best). The Melbourne storm was covered on NZ   TV news this evening.  A "once in a lifetime storm" dumped 150mm
in two hours over Melbourne's E and N suburbs.  Saw footage of cars in water and flooded homes and lightning.

Steven,

If you find your hair standing up near a thunderstorm, you are in imminent danger of being struck by lightning.  An electric field strong enough to do this is not very far from breakdown.

Maybe this message will take a day or two to get through as well.

Re people being lightning conductors.

I have flat straight hair and on a number of occasions near a storm my hair has risen.  strands of hair stand up. that makes
you realise the scale of the electric field near a thunderstorm.

In other parts of the world people do get killed.
To my knowledge no one has been killed by lightning in NZ although you get the occasional story of people
being struck and surviving.  The most common injury is to the eyes. There was even a case here in Auckland
last year of a guy holding up his shirt with a big hole in the back of it from lightning strike. The most recent
lightning strike in NZ was to a boy riding a bike a couple of months back and he needed a couple of days in hospital
to recover.

Hi Steven,

Well as a storn chaser you can be totally blase about this, most of us are or we would not get the awesome lightning photo's that have appeared in this forum recently!

The chances of being struck directly by lightning are always remote, you just have to be part of the best conductive path to ground at the instant of discharge.   Having said that, most people are not killed by a direct strike, but by a close strike where they are electrocuted either by induction in the body (due to the intensity of instantaneous radio frequency components), or by current flow in the body due to instantaneous field strength between the legs, the latter being the manner in which sheep or cattle in a paddock are electrocuted en-mass by a nearby ground strike.

Many people with superficial burns to clothing, etc., who have survived, are showing the results of a close call from minor secondary arcing.  But there may be some extenuating circumstances, where for example, if you are soaked to the skin, the discharge "might" pass over the body rather than through it.  But this is really conjecture and has not been proven.  More likely, such cases are the result of close calls.  You still get one hell of an electric shock and would think for all money, that you had been directly struck.

The sheer amount of current and instantaneous voltage change in a strike bring about these circumstances.  In short, it is not a risk to be taken lightly.  An electric breakdown which has just chanelled through 10 kilometres or so of free air, which has a dielectric breakdown strength of about 30,000 Volts/cm, is not going to worry too much about 1cm or so insulation in one's shoes.  The only good thing about it, is you probably would not know what had hit you, as you are instantly fried or blown apart.  Consider this: The average lightning strike consists of several hundred thousand amperes of electric current.  Your heart can be stopped by just 10 thousandths of an amp.

People are killed by lightning in Oz every year.  Most recently close to me, a gent working on the roof of a steel frame for a new house in Ipswich SEQ was killed last summer, but the lightning hit the structure, not him directly.  He died from heart failure due to shock as he was blown off it.  He was in fact extremely unlucky, the strke was a direct anvil to ground discharge about 10kms ahead of the storm core (based on radar archive), which you rarely see.  Had he been a storm chaser, he would have thought himself pretty safe listening to the still somewhat distant and far overhead rumbles...   But was his hair standing on end just beforehand I wonder????

John.
