Hi all,

The ABC 7.00pm news last weekend reported Perth's temps as 32C on Sat and 34C on Sunday (after a forecast 32C).  Does anyone know if this really happened??  If so, it would cream their record max temp for August by about 6C.

No particular mention was made of Perth's temps despiate that fact that the above would have been a quite remarkable event.

The Sat Pics on the 7:00pm news showed what appeared to be an onimous swirl of cold air over SW W.A., but then the MSL chart showed a High moving into the Bight delivering NE winds for Perth, which lent some credence to the temps. The ABC had a temporary weather person on, so I presume that someone was having a joke at her expense! They also mixed up the teleprompter, as she mentioned a minimum of zero for Ballina, which seemed highly unlikely also. I would note however, that not an evening goes by on the ABC 7:00pm news here (QLD), where the verbally reported temp or rainfall does not agree in one or more places with what is shown on the map! So I wonder a bit about that. Either someone has a very poor grasp of geography or there is considerable leg pulling going on. The leg pulling theory makes sense.

Recall seeing a forecast for Alice Spring a few years back, one summer Saturday night that had a predicted maximum of 40 something and a minimum in the mid 20s.  Nothing unusual about that except the text descriptor on the screen was something like 'hot and steamy and passionate', or some other phrase not in the meteorological lexicon, that sounded like it had been taken from the pages of 'Picture' magazine.

In order to recognise the achievements of some of the presenters at our Australian storm chasers meetings, I thought it would be great to post it here.

Not only were the presentations impressive, last night's meeting and that one last month has set an incredible standard for future meetings. And you could see beyond doubt that people enjoyed themselves. The enthusiasm by the presenters and the thought provoking discussion I hope meant that those that attended went away with some value added knowledge. We were again impressed with the continued and consistent great turnouts. So thanks to all those who attended. For those who show an interest to attend future meetings on storm chasing, you are welcome to e-mail me at
jdeguara at australiasevereweather.com

Meetings are held at Windsor. Please contact myself or Brett
manage at myisp.net.au

to extend your interest in attending. There is a security entrance so you would need to be let in. These meetings are held once a month and are aimed at storm chasing related discussion. The next meeting is to be held on the 20th September 2003 - more information will be posted soon as to the presentations.

The program in brief:

BBQ - thanks goes to Max for his fantastic cooking and Sandra for again providing more than enough delicious fresh salads. The BBQ in itself provided for relaxation and fun - boy did I cop it last night. Let alone the views we had from the balcony. Cannot wait for future meetings during the coming months that will enable for storms to be observed from that balcony simultaneously with radar - more excuses for BBQ's. Thanks Rune for showing your observations booklet and I encourage you to share this with others if you would like. I can show my observational booklets as well in a future presentation with you.

We began with Mal's excellent presentation on radar meteorology which went through definitions, and also case studies of some important attributes of radar signatures. Mal certainly enjoys this topic and it showed - it was pitched at the right level and was well received by the audience.

Next was the discussion of the 16th February 2002 supercell event. This storm was particularly interesting in that it caused widespread damage to the western suburbs. But it was also covered well by chasers. This was a special event for Sandra who discussed her views of the event from outside of the storm and then when her and her husband Pat got hit by the rear flank downdraught RFD. Max talked about his experiences with Paul Yole dogging between updraughts whilst landing at Sydney airport and then chasing it from there. Myself and Matt Piper showed snippets of the spectacular footage of the violent winds just behind the wall cloud region (hook echo region) as well as the beaver tail that evaded observation until after the event. David also showed footage and discussed the important features and behaviour of the wall cloud south of Liverpool and yes some pretty nasty lightning bolts there.

David then took us through explanations of structure involved with severe storms. As usual, he portrayed accurate and clear definitions of these structure as well as the false misconceptions related to each of these features. He then ran some entertaining video of some severe storms from the last couple of years.

Brett displayed the latest instrumentation available in the automatic weather station range covering many brand names. Brett is the Australasian distributor in several product brands and added further insight to the range of possibilities chasers can use on their chases. Brett then proceeded to discuss his favourite topic on bushfires with an extensive display of various aspects of some of the incredible bushfires from Canberra to the Sydney bushfires in the last couple of years.

My apologies go out to Matthew who had a second presentation on thickness lines and Mario for his discussion on Twister the movie. We simply ran out of time!! These presentations amongst others lay the basis for the next meetings agenda items. John will present on theories of the Middle Eastern / Mediterranean flows and the Black Sea? Will be quite interesting. Certainly there will be other presentations which have already been hinted by Mal (more details soon) and others are welcome. Geoff has expressed interest in discussing the past weather charts - his hobby as a young lad and he has kept them though not showed anyone until now.

Thanks once again to all those presenters. Certainly a great success.

Hi Phil,

Hope that you are all safe,  keep away from those buses this time.

Had a look at the web cam and found a whole new selection of vessels crammed in there.  Looks like all the floating cranes are hiding in the safe haven for this storm.

Nice try - I thought someone like you should know what I mean after knowing me all these years but thanks for expressing your concerns. As I said to Mark Hardy on the Weatherzone forum, it was perhaps a wrong choice of one word. I doubt Brett Vilnis who fought some of the intense fires in the past few years would associate with me and others in the group if I we were hoping "animals burning alive and houses burning down". Nevertheless, it should be a thought provoking night and thanks for the show of interest from those who have responded. We have some experts in the field at the meeting who have experienced the trauma and Nick Moir has captured the intense moments on photographs. Please understand these are used as a window for others to know what people have experienced and the effects. I suppose a similar analogy would be photographers in World War I and World War II capturing the scenes of the war zone that now exist in the War Memorial in Canberra. I have even written a section about them in my notes: http://www.australiasevereweather.com/techniques/index.html check out the sections on bushfires The main purpose of our meetings of course is storm chasing but we do venture into bushfires when opportunities and presentations arise. Hi Matthew et al

Jimmy has admitted his words might have been better chosen, but then again, this list has no trouble with the words 'Tornado enthusiast', and tornados can and do cause destruction, admittedly though, not on the scale of fires, in this country.  I suppose if tornados did as much damage as bushfires, you'd might have to be just as careful with your nomenclature.

I take you point, though Matthew, and Mark from Weatherzone noted this as well, that there is the potential, sadly, to attract people with a wrong headed motivation.

I remember back in the late 70s, early 80s, the Victorian Police had a group who used to examine road accidents and try and work out what had happened.  Initially they were called 'Accident Appreciation'.  Soon, however, they were forced to change their name to 'Accident Investigation' or something similar.

I live in Duffy, ACT, and ironically was on my way to the NT to chase storms, when the firestorm went through.  I'm really peeved that I missed that day of infamy and that's because I missed a day when Mother Nature was at her most savage, with unparalleled and once in the life time events unfolding on my doorstep.

One has to be careful about gleaning information from locals, as I try to get a picture of what happened that day to satisfy my curiousity, unquenched.  I recall travelling in cab past vacant blocks, burnt in the fires and the cabbie saying his house had burnt down, nearby.  I did not rush and quiz him on what happened, but first acknowledged what a terrible event it was, and asked if it was okay for him to talk more about it.  He did and he gave me an interesting eyewitness account of his how his home caught alight.  I need to listen, and sometimes others need to talk.

Sorry for the rave.

Matt,

You can look at that comment in a negative way but it is just as easy to look to the positive? I'm proud to be a "bushfire enthusiast" I spend hundreds of hours every year for free as a member of the RFS fighting fires trying to keep Sydney safe. While we have basic weather training I have found the ASC group's meetings priceless in teaching me more about the weather.

The RFS in the Hawkesbury NSW has been flat out over the last week, while the temp is still down, the lack of rain and winds have caused many outbreaks already! The problem is I and many others have had almost 8 months off work over the last three seasons fighting fires and I don't think my business can handle another summer without me? So we need all the positive support we can get for this summer. Hi Steve.

Nice pics - what size is your telescope?

If anyone is interested, you will find 2 of Hubble's best pics of Mars at it's closest taken 11 hours apart combined in one medium quality JPEG image (~93K) at:
http://users.qldnet.com.au/~carls/temp/HubbleMars200308-26-27-full.jpg

You may notice that I have taken the liberty of adjusting the colour balance to more closely match good quality amateur earth-based digital pics and optical observations (i.e. sandy to pinkish with darker areas looking somewhat olivine) - the 'official' images of Mars look too brownish to me, and the blue light scattered in the atmosphere around the limb shows up better in my version than the dark-blue shade in the original images.

You will find unaltered copies of the 2 original TIFF images I downloaded from the Hubble site saved as medium quality JPEGs (~32K each) at:
http://users.qldnet.com.au/~carls/temp/HubbleMars20030826-23-full.jpg
http://users.qldnet.com.au/~carls/temp/HubbleMars20030827-10-full.jpg

I will leave the pics there for a couple of days so anyone that wants to look at them can - they are quite large in area and can be best viewed by downloading them into your computer and opening in quality graphics software.

Regards,
Carl.

I wish I had a camera or video..I saw Mars thru my 10 inch reflector and you could see the polar ice cap quite clearly, but not for long as we didn't have time to line things up straight and the low elevation made it rather fuzzy. But it was something to remember...

Hi all

Just a quick reminder about the ASWA meeting on this Saturday 13th September. The meeting will get underway shortly after 7pm and will be held at Erin's place(please email me if you need the address and you're not an ASWA member).

Items on the agenda include:

- A presentation from Mal Ninnes on accessing radar and warnings on the road
- A presentation from Dann Weatherhead, James Harris and Matt Smith on the "Sydney Storm Chasers" experiences over the last year or so
- General discussion about where we want NSW ASWA to go over the next year(brainstorm)
- Footage(bring anything you have!)
- Pizza(bring about $5)
- Weather briefing
- Plus anything else we think of on the night

It promises to be a great night so make sure you're there! Visitors are always welcome, so invite your friends along.

One other important thing - one of the attendees has a strong allergy to various chemicals(especially those in aerosols etc), so we have been requested not to wear "smelly" deoderants, perfumes etc. Don't worry...we'll all stink together :P
