On average we tend to be half to a degree colder than Amberley...but our valley seems to be a frost hollow. Last night the wind kept up though giving a warmer minimum than Amberley (-2.2C here, -2.4C at Amberley). There was a light southerly breeze just stirring the leaves which was enough to mix the air, hence the min of a relatively mild 4.7C, and by 7:30am it was back up to 6.9C. Our 1.7C on Thursday morning is the second coldest I have recorded after -0.1C in last year's frost. The dew point at Amberley is currently -2.3C on the Brisbane obs, so I would expect a min around that tonight or just below at that location. Only a light SW breeze blowing at present. The time lapse shows the feature edging northward and appears a little like a gulf cloud line....?? The cloud motion through the line gives the appearance that it is flowing at the east to the west. The mechanism involved though, seems something else and I suspect the possibilty of a gravity wave of soughts?. the line dissipated later in the day....surface humidity in this area will be very low, the other odd setup is the appearance of the line on the water vapour this would then suggest an upper level feature? however, the upper winds above 500hpa do not surport the wesward movement of cloud/smoke patches. Further west there is an increase in the trade wind speed west of Broome....lots of questions any gravity wave experts out there? regards Clyve Herbert. ----- Original Message ----- at : "Jane ONeill" To: "Aussie-wx" Sent: Sunday, August 03, 2003 5:28 PM Subject: aus-wx: Is it smoke? > A curious plume has appeared over the northern West Australian interior > which extends westward. The trough axis probably encountered a very shallow moist layer around 400hpa to 500hpa as it passed through which made it visible on the sat pix. This very shallow moist (or at least "less dry") layer shows up on this morning's Broome and Port Headland soundings. The vorticity analysis at 00z this morning at http://grads.iges.org/pix/aus1.00hr.gif shows a vorticity trough moving through the area of interest leading me to my conclusion. Presumably, the passage of the trough axis created just enough vertical motion to form some cloud at that level. The plume becomes pretty much simultaneously visible along a line at northern WA right out to about 1,000km off-shore into the Indian Ocean - that would tend to rule out smoke at a fire. I would be interested in others thoughts.. A couple of friends would like to know what happened on that particular night, basically a suburb of Memphis was destroyed by high velocity winds, i have done a quick search through the NWS archives and news reports but i cannot seem to find the data i am looking for (i am most likely looking in the wrong place hence me popping the question to you guys). What i am seeking, is if the damage was actually tornadic and not the result of a mere "severe thunderstorm", as there were apparently tornados in the vicinity. Any help would be sincerely appreciated as i will have to forward it onto the relevant people. Kind regards. Jimmy, yesterday i downloaded the report at the 22nd at the NWS archives however the day(s) prelude are also of interest, studying them indeed it appears more hail and wind related damage in the areas affected. The reason for this is that a couple of friends suffered damage during that night and are unsure if the NWS got it right in regards to warnings etc and are unsure if they were actually hit by a tornado. at what i have recieved so far i would attribute the damage to the specified area as caused by a very severe microburst, not tornadic wind damage, hence me trying to find all possible info i can. Brendans reflectivity images were a help, thankyou however i will need to dig deeper, i must state here and now i am NOT out to prove someone wrong or right, i have no reason to believe the NWS were not that bad they would fail to put out a warning as there is such a successful and active network of chasers, dopplers and the like, Jimmy would know about. This is purely for my own interest, that of Missy and a couple of others. Time will prevail. Thankyou for your help, both of you, and to those without running through the list here. On the Sunday night looking at the moon you could see the haze before cloud cover came across later in the night. I would say that a combination of the two would have prevented alot of the heat at escaping into the atmosphere hence the warmer temps. Gavin, I agreed with your comments on the radio this morning re the fires and warnings (or lack thereof). It was pretty clear to me on the Friday and certainly the morning of Saturday the 18th that Canberra suburbs faced a very real threat at the fires. At 12pm on Saturday, it was pretty clear to me that my suburb Higgins (a north-western suburb) could have been in danger and I began to pack some precious items in case the worst happened. I was surprised by both the lateness of the official warnings and the fact that anyone in who was actually in Canberra that morning could have been taken by surprises at what happened that afternoon (ie by 9.00am the temp had already got to 30, the wind was strengthening at the NW with gusts increasing at 30-40km/hr and huge columns of smoke coming at forests just to the NW of the city). I will, however, leave my further comments on this subject to other forums. Hi Simon, Patrick, Gavin et al

Funny you should mention this Simon, I was looking to revive the NSW bushfires thread in Weatherzone, today, after the Mcleod report came out, but couldn't find the thread.

I think Patrick as well, and you too, noted the possible danger in the thread.  What annoyed me initially was the lack of publicity the Canberra Times gave it, in the first few days, particularly on Sunday 12 and Monday 13.  There were huge plumes of smoke drifting out towards the Riverina - something I hadn't seen in nearly 20 years in Canberra, yet on the Monday they gave it minimal coverage on page 3.

I made a mental note to clean up the undergrowth around my house (in Duffy) but never got round to it, after seeing the smoke in the Brindabellas.

The Mcleod report doesn't comment on whether the NSW ignitited MacIntyre's Hut fire could have been doused earlier - remember though this was a multiple ignition fire in very hard to access mountainous location, which became a larger fire, more quickly than the Bendora Dam, Stockyard Spur  and Gingera fires that started in the ACT.

I agree Patrick the Emergency Service Bureau were remiss in not issuing stronger earlier warnings.  I recall Phil Koperburg, in the 93/94 fires making a very grave statement one evening on the news that up to a thousand houses might burn the next day.  It didn't happen, but at least everyone was put on notice.

We now see detailed maps of where the fire was at each day - my question is why weren't something approximating these maps issued to the press in the week before the fire?  During the ten days between ignition and 18 January it was impossible to get detailed information about where the fires were and what areas they had burnt.

Of course the main culprit for the number of houses burnt was the pine forests of Stromlo.  Without them, the number of residences lost would have been more like 200 than 400.

What a great storm Bathurst had last night. Around 5.30pm the clouds were extremely dark. I had no access to net due to Harddrive problems. Went to friends house and witnessed a fantastic hail storm which lasted about 5 -10 min, this occurred around 6.55pm. The back verandah was white with hail. Some photos were taken which will be up to view very soon. Many reports of trees down and power lines around Orange, Bathurst and Oberon. SES and council crews called in to clean up the mess. Most of Raglan/Kelso areas of Bathurst all had no power to due powerlines down. It was 3 hours before completely restored. The radar showed some pink images and red images south of Bathurst prior to getting storm. I called Matt Pearce to advise of what was happening here.. He was correct in saying we were about to get slaughtered. There has been a strong, low-level inversion operating over at least eastern NSW over the past couple of nights. The temperature a few hundred metres above the surface has been at 8 to 15C higher than at the surface with a light northwesterly blowing over denser cold air pooling below. So Mt Boyce and Katoomba this morning had minima of 6 and 7, but Bathurst was -1. The most extreme example I've seen was Coonabarabran where the town minimum, on the Castlereagh River floodplain, was -3.0 and the airport, about 4km south and on a ridge 200m higher (figures at memory) had a min of +7. Coonabarabran's figures yesterday were -5 for the town and +6 for the airport.
