The weather cleared about 6 am..I remember awaking to gale force westerlies. By midday the sky had cleared completely to a warm hazy day with light winds and seabreezes and people on the news were asking 'where did that storm go?' The villain of the piece was an east coast low that moved down right over the coastline. I recorded 4 inches of rain in 2 days (at Dulwich Hill), topping off a wet week, and although the pressure wasn't really all that low I have a note of westerlies to Beaufort force 8 as it passed by. But who remembers the June 1975 storm...that really did wonders for barographs! As to the NCEP site, I am not very familar with it either. I believe best to only put one date at a time (bit clunky & slow I know). This is what i did for one of the date: [Variables] - Mean sea level [Analysis level] - Surface {date} May 12 1963 [to] May 12 1963 {I think if dates are different, you end up getting a composite, which is not what you want.} [Plot type] check "Mean" [Scale Plot Size(%)] - 150 [Region of globe] - custom [Custom] -65 -10 90 180 {in corresponding boxes} {every else I left default} - the go forward/backward one day does not seem to work either so have to manually go back & update the date :( There is a current project to digitise all paper charts as far back as possible. Currently, the group responsible, is up to 1956 (perfect to look up the 1956 event). This is a huge manual job as you can imagine given the number of charts since wx started in Aus. Shortly they will be made avail to public like the others have been. [an aside - was simply amazed with the synoptic anals pre [56 event] & after [63 event]intro of sat pics, and the little amount of data around Aus compared to nowadays] In a sense, the current situation is looking more & more analogue to the 1963 event. Latest models seems to have low deepening shortly off the NSW coast. JMA is going for a deeper low than others so large falls could result if it comes off. I am sending the charts to the interested people shortly. [format is tif - qite large 1/2mb each - so send some today and rest tomorrow in case only have small email account] Gavin - definitely interesting to see the barograph of that event. If you know the exact date, I can search & send you the corresponding charts. regards, tuan -----Original Message----- at : aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com [mailto:aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com]On Behalf Of Keith Barnett Sent: Tuesday, 1 July 2003 07:56 To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: Re: aus-wx: Rare Synoptic. Hello Everyone

We have had some good rain out of the NW cloud band.
Birdsville with 22mm
and Bedourie 20mm. Quilpie and Windorah also in the channel country with over 20mm at this event. Some feed at the previous rains has been able to hang on so we should see a lot more cattle return to this area.

I have included a new part in my software to log into the APRS network and grab the weather station stuff at it. Currently as I type with it logged into the Australia main gateway, I have it logging 417 weather stations. Some of these are in but most are elsewhere. Actually I have found one in Shepparton Vic which is only 30 kms at my home town. One for you Bussy ;-) My question is does anyone know of any other networks etc that I can join to supplement Australian information? Thge above one comes in via TELNET protocol. The majority of the WX stations are setup by radio amateurs with varying levels of weather knowledge and interest, so the results may not be accurate. 2. Most stations update every 30 minutes (standard for fixed stations) 3. Why is it in America, they use 10ths for average temperatures, but round when they use extremes?

90F could have been 89.5F to 90.4F, which gives a range of 31.9C to 32.4C. Not much difference I know, but when comparing them to Australian records a 0.1C of a degree can make all the difference in breaking records!

As far as I know in Australia prior to our pre metric days in the early 1970's, the BoM still recorded temperatures in 10ths Fahrenheit.

Sure have!  Here in the Illawarra we seemed to be sandwiched between two rain areas and scored very little during the day. Just on dusk there were several flashes of lightning on the northern escarpment - possibly near Waterfall.

I use 10ths for the average as I average the total of the highs/lows for the month (I like "true" numbers, so I don't round up when I crunch numbers). As far as the warmest/coldest temps in a month, those numbers come at radio station KENA(the official wx station for the area), I don't think those temps are rounded up (but I could be wrong). This is the case even at stations run directly by the National Weather Service. It's actually (reasonably) legitimate to express a mean of 30/31 whole numbers to one decimal point - the standard error of the mean is approximately +/- 0.1. Jacob's right that the official standard in Australia pre-metrication was to record to the nearest 0.1 degrees Fahrenheit, but in practice many observations were only taken to whole degrees or half-degrees - I had a look at this a while back and found that Fahrenheit temperatures ending in .0 were about three times as frequent as they should be. (.0 and .5 are still over-represented today - leaving aside those AWSs that only report to whole degrees - but not to anywhere near the same extent. Interestingly, round numbers are over-represented in almost any data set that requires a human measurement or response, even people's ages in the Census). There are two reasons we are getting weather associated with colder temperatures. One is because aphelion(day in the year that the is Sun furthest at Earth)occurs this year on July 4th, not around Solstice day in June as some might believe. Aphelion varies but usually occurs between July 2nd - 7th.  Around the first week in July temperatures usually plummet. The second reason is the proximity of the New moon to northern declination, the details of which I will avoid here for fear of controversy, but the science for it can be found on my website.

An interesting twist ( at what I recall) about aphelion is that the average temperature of the Earth's surface is slightly _higher_ at aphelion than at perihelion. This seemingly strange state of affairs is due to the imbalance of land mass on the Earth's surface. The Northern Hemisphere has much more land than the Southern Hemisphere, and this means it responds to changes in solar radiation levels (radiation flux/sq metre - the varying angle of the sun with the seasons swamps the few percent change due to the distance of the Earth at the Sun) much more strongly than water (which has a very high specific heat). This means that the Northern Hemisphere (on average) warms up more in the northern summer and cools down more in the winter than the Southern Hemisphere (that came at NASA). However, on this end of the world, aphelion does slightly increase the severity of winter (but not nearly as much as our proximity to all that water moderates it!). 73 de Tony, VK3JED http://vkradio.com +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe at aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ at : "Ken Ring" To: Subject: Re: aus-wx: snow warning Date: Thu, 3 Jul 2003 23:38:43 +1200 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2600.0000 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com That's interesting, Tony, thanks. Hi Simon
I have been barred at publishing predictions on two NZ forums run by meteorologists. Last July, when I wrote Almanac 2003 I forecast this to be a warmer and wetter winter overall for NZ. The Metservice and NIWA are only now saying the same thing. In reality I was just using averages like everyone else, and at Metservice obs to boot. But apparently any whisper of using a lunar factor makes other forecasters break out in spots. There is a learning curve here which many seem reluctant to venture upon. Yet the BoM sees no problem in exploring aboriginal techniques, which were lunar-based. Looks like the 'aboriginal' tag makes it more acceptable. Anyway, in order to keep the peace, even on this forum, I suggest you visit my website for forecasts or email me personally.

How amazing is this?! forwarded to the list on behalf of Clyve Herbert.... Surprise thunderstorm activity over the Central Ranges of Victoria yesterday afternoon (Thursday 3rd July, 2003), at an early morning low minimum of 0°C and frost, turkeys started sprouting by 10am, and even with a temperature below 10°C, it was difficult to walk around without looking at the sky. By midday., congesting cumulus were powering upwards just about everywhere. By 1330 vigorous low topped Cbs had started to develop. For the remainder of the afternoon they just kept growing bigger and bigger, eventually topping out close to 30,000'. At 1345 near Gisborne, I managed to get myself near to the base of a vigorous updraft that quickly developed a wallcloud (small) and started rotating. A funnel appeared almost within seconds, and wound around the wallcloud. I almost forgot to take pictures astonished by the sight!! Fortunately, composing myself, I fired away with my Canon digicam and this is one of the results. http://www.stormchasers.au.com/Jul03/gisborne2b.jpg Regards, Clyve Herbert +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe at aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe at aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ X-Originating-IP: [144.134.113.27] X-Originating-Email: [mrcenterprises at hotmail.com] at : "Gavin O'Brien" To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: Re: aus-wx: Gisborne funnel!!!!!! Some smaller cells well to the west also visible apparently in the Batlow area.I was suprised to see tops up to 30,000 feet at this time of year. Especially Ross's one of the storm clouds. What actually happened that day, I am curious. The sunsets remind me of the wonderful sunsets at my childhood at Doonside. We don't have such a good view of the setting sun at Mona Vale. Interesting and rapid development of a broad high cloud area moving over northwest WA. There seems to be an upper baroclinic zone drawing moisture at near the equitorial region. The very intense low south of WA looks to have activated the upper flow ahead of its associated long wave trough. regards Clyve H. +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe at aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ X-Originating-IP: [144.138.156.219] X-Originating-Email: [mrcenterprises at hotmail.com] at : "Gavin O'Brien" To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: Re: aus-wx: High cloud NW AUS Date: Tue, 08 Jul 2003 14:58:50 +1000 X-OriginalArrivalTime: 08 Jul 2003 04:58:50.0552 (UTC) FILETIME=[9F455B80:01C3450D] Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi Clyve, We ar
