Satpic this morning is interesting, it shows a nice cold pool of air sitting in SW NSW, appears to be moving NE. Woomera and Cobar both had -18C at 500mb last night on their soundings, -19.5C at 500mb on the Wagga sounding. Yesterday saw Mt Gambier have -24C at 500mb! If you look at some of the progs, it pushes the cold pool into NW NSW (-21 to -22C at 500mb) later today! Then pushes it over NE NSW/SE QLD tomorrow (Friday) - it weakens it a bit, but -19 to -20C at 500mb is quite considerable! Even with SE'lies there'll be a chance of storms (similar to about 10 days ago when another cold pool drifted into the Downs). AVN is progging some moderate instability if you look at the LIS over NE NSW/SE QLD (-3 to -4) although because the instability is primarily at the cold pool, basically wherever the cold pool goes, that'll be around the best area for storms! However, as usual when you sit underneath the cold pool, shear won't be that crash hot on Friday (ie <15 knots until 300mb...). Still worth keeping an eye out for! Some slow moving storms (or even showers) could produce some reasonable hail, hopefully over or close to my place as I'm working in the afternoon! -- Anthony Cornelius Vice President & Queensland Coordinator of the Australian Severe Weather Association (ASWA) 0417 759 304 http://www.severeweather.asn.au +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe at aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ at : "Ken Ring" To: Subject: Re: aus-wx: Melbourne rain Date: Thu, 1 May 2003 17:42:29 +1200 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2600.0000 Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com ABC ONline Regional forecast for Melbourne, Franston, Geelong etc.. A few storms have developed on radar - lightning off to my NW at some cells that were in the pink before (green now). Also a line of showers and storms in the Downs (probably the line you saw way out west yesterday afternoon Jeff) - might check the ASWA radar achives to confirm this though. But if so, it's done well to survive that long! The satpic shows a fair amount of cloud over the SE corner though at all of the convection that has developed yesterday afternoon/overnight. Hopefully it clears for today! Main thing is shear is quite weak so it may not do so, but the Downs should be clear. Regardless there should be some storm activity around, especially if stuff has developed at night when it's cold! (Well, 18/16 here) - ooer, thunder!! Cells back in the pink again on Bris local... Interesting photos. I had a look at the upper air soundings for the day and they didn't look terribly interesting. As you would expect in Belgium in spring, a low CAPE environment and there was no sign of wind shear. Deep SW flow. This cb was likely to have come on a frontal line perhaps. Spring has sprung here too Jane. The blue skies of winter have been replaced by grey skies, occasional thunderstorms, but mainly lots of fine drizzle and super high humidity. May is the month during which our RH here most often reaches 100%. As it is also beginning to get hotter, if you work out of doors, you tend to stink at less than two or three showers a day. All the action was on the other side of the mountains apart at that first rumble. The Thunderstorm Warning was hoisted at 18:05 and lowered at 00:05 and hoisted again at 02:30 and is still up now, but we actually had a very quiet night here. We had 30mm in the past 24h, all ahead of that rumble I heard yesterday afternoon, and Tseung Kwan O, 12km away on the other side of the mountains has had 200mm, most of it since that rumble. I am heading off to church soon, so it will probably all start happening again while church is on. Regarding the comparison with Singapore, we get hardly any thunder compared to them, but we do have a lot of typhoons most years. Singapore (only a few miles at the Equator for those who don't know) got its once in 400 years typhoon in December 2001. Meanwhile, the village of Stanley, 20km South of here has had less than 5mm. At the moment the observatory has simultaneously hoisted the Red Rainstorm Warning, the Thunderstorm Warning, the Landslip Warning, and the Northern New Territories Flood Warning. In June last year we broke the record for rain in one month at just over a metre. But today Kam Tin gets half a metre of rain after midnight and before lunch! All the schools are closed because of the rain - they were due to open today after more than a month of closure due to the SARS epidemic - if it's not one thing it's another! A little station in the mountains a few km North East of Kam Tin had a tiny circle of 500-600mm shading around it on the 00:00-10:00 Isohyet chart. Now it has been removed at the 00:00-21:00 Isohyet chart. The whole of that area is now shown as 400-500mm. I have no idea exactly where that little station is or what may be around it. Several stations around it received between 400 and 500. Further back all around they had between 300 and 400. Practically the whole of NW NT, SW NT and all of Lamma Island got between 200 and 300 or higher. The rain out in those parts reportedly ceased around 10:00am. Since then there has been significant falls in the South, so Stanley which had received less than 5mm during 00:00-10:00 has received 100-150 during 00:00-21:00. Everywhere you go, everything's flooded and everything's dripping even between each of the squalls. Not good camping or hiking weather. The Thunderstorm and Landslip warnings are both still current, the Rainstorm and Flooding warnings have both been lowered. A trough of low pressure brings rain and thunderstorms to the coastal areas of Guangdong. Locally, the heavy rain today brought more than 100 millimetres of rainfall to most parts of the territory. Those recorded at Yuen Long, Kam Tin, Shek Kong, Tai Po, Fanling and Tai Lam Chung even exceeded 350 millimetres. Weather forecast for tonight and tomorrow Cloudy with some showers, heavy at times with a few squally thunderstorms tonight and tomorrow morning. Temperatures will range between 24 and 27 degrees. Unfortunately with these fast moving situations, people were killed. The National Weather Service did in there warnings indicate a great potential for strong to violent tornadoes to develop in stronger storms based on the Relative Helicity and lowest level shear dynamics. They were also predicting long lived supercells and in some cases many supercells to develop. In these situations I guess, everything just develops and begins to rotate all the way at top to ground. It is a humble experience just thinking about these situations certainly nothing like we get here. I suppose we are lucky in that respect. This is at Bussy and "IS NOT SPAM" !!! Way off topic but worth mentioning. Bloody spam. I got a fair bit of it probably by being naïve and clicking to say I don't want their services. Bingo! They have found a live email address and it goes on at there. Now I get lots. I have been given a program at a friend of mine that lets you eliminate these emails and its FREE. I've tried it and I reckon its great. You start it up then let "it" check the emails and then choose to blacklist them or whatever, then click on the "start email program" and all the "normal" emails will come through but not the others. As far as I can see the "blacklisted" ones are banished forever. I think they stop at the server and that's as far as they get. Not a genius :-) Anyone want to give it a go then email me off list and I'll send it to you. Approx 1.4 meg and pretty easy to work out. Took me a couple of minutes to work out what was happening. The clue was that the sun lined up with the contrail precisely. The plane's contrail left a shadow on the smog, which happened to fall in line with the flight path. Freaky coincidence of geometry. We'd be lucky to see that again soon. As a matter of fact, the contrail drifted out of alignment with the sun a few minutes later, and you could see the shadow beside it... 73 de Tony, VK3JED http://vkradio.com +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe at aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ X-Sender: vk3jed-1 at 192.168.15.1 X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Version 5.1.1 Date: Tue, 06 May 2003 21:46:54 +1000 To: aussie-weather at world.std.com at : "Tony Langdon (VK3JED)" Subject: Re: aus-wx: Jet flying along its shadow Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com At 08:26 PM 6/05/2003 +0930, you wrote: >Hi Jane, > >Nice pic. Awesome. One was in multi-vortex mode as well. Been a while since there have been good footage on the news passed across. Keep watching as it seems more tornadoes are expected over the coming days. The wind shear dynamics and incredible instability is combining again for more potential outbreak conditions with strong tornadoes possible. I do get upset when I see deaths like these when there were advanced warnings. This was daytime too?? Click on the link, then add the letters that have wrapped onto the next line at the end of the address in your address bar. In my case, only the single letter "i" had become detached onto the next line. Once you have performed the above trick, the link works perfectly.
