Well, just at this moment, the New Year is looking better than the old one! I hope NSW and Qld are getting the rain that came through here. It looked as if we were going to have to buy some water as we were perilously close to running out, but we just got a 30mm reprieve, which filled up the tank and overflowed it. Thank goodness, because the town water is ghastly. The rain also watered our block, which we have covered in about 500+ trees, a lot grown from seed by me. We have been watering them, but it takes a lot of time and effort and never replaces a good soaking rain. I would have hated to lose any of them.

From our living room we get a wonderful view across a small valley to Ballarat. In summer the storms sweep across from the west and as soon as they hit the hills we get some wonderful light shows - better than fireworks. (although I suspect the farmers who live under the lighning with their tinder-dry paddocks aren't as impressed.)

Happy New Year to everyone.

All the best for everyone for the New Year. It's been a tough one all over Australia, but the Australian spirit will always shine through and we'll get straight back on our horses.
It's been tough everywhere we've looked this year. Politically, environmentally or whatever.
We as Australians are a very proud people and can get over anything, as we have in the past and will do in the future.
Not only to the Aussies on the list but to all, I wish you all the best for the New year.

Some very galvanizing story's so far! I've had some close-ish calls in my life but the most memorable one was when I was about 5 or 6 years old, I can remember some of it still rather vividly. Anyway, I was up in my room (top south window of a two storey house) watching a nice lightning show (as I always have done, back in the days when we used to get storms in Sydney :P), it was around 8 or 9pm at night and I noticed the lightning (mostly forking cg's) were tending to get closer and closer. All of a sudden there was a brilliant flash of white and an absolutely deafening noise on which just threw me into shock for a few seconds. The bedroom lights started flashing on and off, and some of the electronic toys (some spaceship that made noises) switched themselves on and started going crazy. I ran down stairs as fast as I could, my brother and my dad were already halfway up the stairs wondering what just had happened. It took me a while to calm down, I was rather freaked out for a while and I was too afraid to go upstairs during storms for quite a while. The cg had obviously hit my house or the large palm tree near the window.

Few signs of life reported on Tikopia after cyclone

The first plane to fly over cyclone battered Tikopia in the Solomon Islands reported massive destruction and few signs of life, New Zealand's TV3 has reported.

The station's cameraman Jeff Mackley flew over the island, struck Saturday by Cyclone Zoe, from Vanuatu.

"It's the worst damage I have ever seen," he said.

There were few signs of life.

Tikopia, which is believed to have a population of around 2,000, has been cut off since just before the storm hit.

An Australian Hercules was due to fly over later today and a Solomons Government patrol vessel was due to sail from the capital Honiara on Wednesday.

The TV3 pictures showed most of the forest stripped bare on the picturesque volcanic island.

The few houses that could be seen were also destroyed.

Mr Mackley, who chartered the single engined aircraft, specialises in filming storms around the world.

Glad to hear about your rain! You needed it.

Here in Darwin we awoke on New Years Day to see what seemed to be the long-awaited Monsoon creeping down from the NW.

But in the afternoon, Berrimah Radar (BOM) showed a rain belt coming up from the South.

This seems to be associated with a cloud belt stretching from the Kimberlys SE to NSW.

We should complain - if this is not the blessed monsoon, we'll settle for it.

Cool grey skies, soft continuous rain, muted rumbles of thunder - YAY! Happy Territorians!

This commentary on the developing monsoon which is now in the Arafura Sea (Weekly tropical climate note):

The near equatorial troughs in both the hemispheres were reorganised during last week. A good northeast surge was evident over the South China Sea into the active convection over the tropical Indian Ocean west of 120E. The cross equatorial flow from the northwest Pacific fed into the southern hemisphere monsoon trough except over Australian longitudes. SPCZ area was active with the formation of tropical cyclone Zoe in the area.

Time-longitude plots of 200 hPa velocity potential, mean sea level pressure and OLR series show increased convection to the west of the Darwin RSMC* longitude range, with obvious eastward propagation. Consistent with this, station pressure series show good phase agreement. BMRC 's coherent OLR mode displays [http://www.bom.gov.au/bmrc/clfor/cfstaff/matw/maproom/maproom.html] show the current active MJO pulse which commenced at about 80E during last week propagated eastwards to 120E and expected to progress further to 160E during the next couple of weeks. Current active convection over Sumatra is expected to reach northern Australia during the end of this week, which is consistent with the numerical model forecasts. Climatologically the active pulse of the monsoon prevails for one to two weeks over northern Australia. With the increased convection and active monsoon trough, the chances of tropical cyclone formation in the Australian region increases.

I notice isolated parts of NW Oz had 25mm in an hour this afternoon.

Phil's comments: At the moment Geoff is absolutely inundated by media enquiries so it's impossible to phone him. Also, his web site is so popular that it is taking many, many minutes to load even using Broadband. Note that the pilot of Geoff's Cessna counted 100 people on the ground on Tikopia, so it is not absolute destruction of the population as was erroneously reported by some media reports. The survivors need prayer support as they face up to grieving for all their lost relatives and the massive job of rebuilding their homes from scratch. good on ya robert, you've made your views absolutley radiant, having been bought up as a christian in my early years and turned to science over the next 20, i express my views in the appropriate forums, whilst i agree with your views, your public slap in the face and attack on his beliefs, to phil on his concerned expression toward these people is dispicable and if you've got nothing better to say  other than attack someones beliefs then do your self and everyone else a favour  and don't post into this forum.

i'm with you phil, my heart and thoughts go out to these people who have been  basically cleaved off the map.......paradise lost.

It's a while I think since the tropics looked this promising:

What chance I wonder of one of those mobile monsoon depressions, that love to trek westward across the NT and turn into west coast cyclones,  coming south this year and breaking the drought...?

The SOI show it's well into the 0 mark, could this been the end to the worst drought that we are having.

It is actually far more prevalent than just that e-mail address.

There is a plethora of virus attachments coming through hotmail at the moment.

Any attachment that claims to be a free Screensaver or any other suspicious executable (*.pif, *.exe *.bat etc . . .) DO NOT OPEN- delete the e-mail immediately, even if it comes from a known source. Basically, if you did not ask for it, do not use it! J

A little bit of common sense is the best virus prevention

Cheers

good on ya robert, you've made your views absolutley radiant, having been bought up as a christian in my early years and turned to science over the next 20, i express my views in the appropriate forums, whilst i agree with your views, your public slap in the face and attack on his beliefs, to phil on his concerned expression toward these people is dispicable and if you've got nothing better to say  other than attack someones beliefs then do your self and everyone else a favour  and don't post into this forum.

i'm with you phil, my heart and thoughts go out to these people who have been  basically cleaved off the map.......paradise lost.

Prayer support Phil? Oh please. Would prayers have prevented this? If prayers had any effect imagine what a happy place Jerusalem must be tonight. And is it?

Dear Lord, help us stick to science!
