Hi all.
I thought I would post this little trick
for archiving radar and Lightning tracker images, useful for chasers who need
radar archived while chasing.
Firstly Get OPERA, a free web browser, avail at www.opera.com they have V7.0 beta 1 available
but I recommend getting V6 as beta versions always have bugs. Version 6 is here:
ftp://ftp.planetmirror.com/pub/opera/win/605/
en/ Java version comes with Java runtime, and is ~11meg, Standard doesn’t have
java and is ~3.5meg.
For BoM radar you don’t need java, but for WZ animators
you do, but more on WZ and animators shortly.
Once installed, open opera and go to
file/preferences (or Alt+P)
Look toward the bottom of the left menu for
“History and Cache” and select it.
In the top right hand corner of the right
side you will see “Disk Cache”.
This is where you can set the amount of disk
space the cache will take up. I have it set on 20000kb (or 200meg) and all but
“empty on exit” ticked. Have a look at other options here and set them to your
desire.
Once adjusted open your radar loop/s from the BoM
and opera allows multiple pages within the browser interface so you can
basically open all radars if you like.
The radars update and opera saves every image in
the directory c:/program files/opera/cache4/
This is the directory to go to
when retrieving the images. Now opera saves them as a really weird name so the
next thing you will need is a directory viewer that includes “image properties”
Windows explorer doesn’t have it so I recommend ACDSee, available from here: http://www.acdsystems.com/ this has image
properties functions.
Now for getting the files, the easiest way is using
the image properties look for files that are 524*564*64 gif files. If you click
the image properties column header in ACDSee it will sort them out for you,
select all the radar files and move them to your desired directory.
Now the stupid naming is crazy so you can either
rename them your self or leave them, the way you can tell the date/time of the
images is the “last modified” details.
That’s all I can think of regarding BoM
Radar.
Now to the weatherzone. Its radar auto updates as well, but because
the file name is the same every time, it just re-saves every image over the last
one, or so it seems to me. I’ve always had trouble with archiving WZ radar and
Lighting trackers. Perhaps you can do it with a Download client like get right,
set it to download every ten minutes and rename the files but I am unsure of
this.
The only time WZ images save individually is from the animators but the
problem here is the Background is a sperate image, and the radar echo’s are a
PNG file that has transparent elements in it, I have been unable thus far to
make an animation work with the using the images and background.
If you have any questions then just ask
me.
Cheers

John,
Glad you are getting some rain. We have had some very gusty storms but very
little rain 6.9 mm for November at Gilmore but other areas may have had more
from th e storms of the last few days.
Did people on the list see the film of the Griffith (NSW) Dust storm? I
lived there from 1948 to 1965 (Brought up there) I would have to go back to
the 1950's for a scene like I saw last night! The area shot was from the
lookout on Scienic Hill looking south west. The horizon would be about 25 km
away on a clear day.

Hopefully, the "Major" will understand (I changed

I should have pointed out that a sub request would
have been made in the first place, but I think the gist would have been lost

As a general rule i have worked out over time, messages to the list which
are mailed in html format *groans* generally do not come complete with the
unsubscribe option, however in a plain text format it will come up with the

If one or 2 of those unwanted postings were actually read, a link might have

Why don't you block HTML emails and just convert them to plain text? Thanks,

Thankyou sincerely for the returned words of wisdom, i will do everything in
my power to block html emails that get sent to the mailing list here, even
after numerous requests from un-named members requesting that they be sent
in simple and easy plain text.
I am very humbled..
*Can also smell the rain in the air and crossing fingers*
To be honest, i couldnt give a flying stuff David but at least people know
how to unsubscribe if they feel they are being spammed in the first place.
Back on topic though, looks like some rather nice cells in the Wide Bay
area, i hope everyone on TDU is having a blast, it sure looks very nice up
that way although down this end of town there doesnt seem to be a lot
happening.. still any rain will be good, the falls of the last couple of
days have saved us $70 for a truckload of water and have caused us to try
and rebuild our ride-on mower for the grass is beginning to get rather tall
and green again.
Regards

I've written up this event rather belatedly, and there's a rather juicy sat

Those of you that don't trawl through the WeatherZone forum may have missed
Ben Quinn's discovery of a fabulous satellite image site from NASA. The
images are available down to 250 metre (250 metre) resolution, though at
this size they are a hefty 7 to 10mb, but really worth the wait. The site
may not be intuitive to those who aren't familiar with satellite orbits, so
I've written some simple instructions -- check the Weather Site News on the
main page at http://australianweathernews.com. You really must try at least
one of the 250m images; they're clear enough to be able to pick out urban
area detail, so the detail in cloud structures is phenomenal! A nice image
to whet the appetite is the 00.55 Terra/MODIS image for today 1 December,
which shows most of South Australia cloud free, but some nice patterns in
the clouds to the south.
As there is a full archive back to April 2001, you can happily while away an
evening looking for images of Australia. Also, check out the Gallery page,
and type "Australia" into the search engine. Most of the images are of
bushfires, but that's because the prime purpose of the site is fire
detection and monitoring.

Today I flew back from Kuala Lumpur to Hong Kong and while we were about
1700 km away - somewhere SE of Ho Chi Min City - over the South China
Sea, the captain announced that everybody should return to their seats as
soon as possible and make sure their seat belts were securely fastened.
The plane was travelling steady and smooth without the slightest hint of
turbulence when he made the announcement. The sun was streaming down and
the clouds were way down below near the sea surface. We were flying at
38000 feet.
Then about two minutes after the announcement there was some quite rough
turbulence like when one is flying through a thunderstorm but still there
was no sign of cloud anywhere near the aeroplane. We were flying at 880
km/h so I estimated each patch of turbulence to be 30 - 50 km followed by
30 - 50 km of still air followed by more turbulence. After a few patches
like this, the captain turned off the seat belt sign about 20 seconds
before running out of the last patch of turbulence. The rest of the
flight was uneventful.
My question is, what was causing the turbulence in clear air? And what
could the captain see to alert him that turbulence was going to be
straight ahead of us before we actually reached it? And how did he know
that the turbulence was going to end before we actually flew out of it?
Has anyone any ideas?

HI Phil,
Ive been a keen air monitor for years. Other people on this list may be able
to explain better.
The Aircaft these days have Clear Air Turbulence (CAT) radars in their
cockpits. They are very complicated weather radar systems. I suggest to
search on www.google.com for more info on these instruments.

Dave

Hi Phil,
As one of the forecasters that look after aviation above 10kft, I should
make some comments. I didn't forecast for the area you mentioned so I am
only inferring what happened from you comments.
Short answer to your question: Excellent forecast combined with a very
experienced captain resulted in no one getting injured.
Clear air turb (CAT) probably occur more often than people realise but
aviation industry plan around these areas to keep incidents to a minimal.
Sometimes CAT areas are very hard to forecast, as you can't see them (kind
of like a black hole - you have to infer from stuff happening around it).
Many reasons for CAT areas. Common ones are - jet with a strong anticyclonic
curvature, when a lower jet undercut a higher one, when there is a sharp
upper trough, when flow diverge, etc (you get my drift).
In the tropics, sometimes it appears that planes experience CAT because they
are flying well above the cloud. However, most of the time, the turb is
actually due to CBs!!! (Jets tend to occur further away from the deep
tropics due to lack to temp gradient. Hence CAT due to jets don't really
occur in the tropics). With right conditions, CB updrafts can grow very tall
(>45kft) in very short time. Fast growing CBs below can cause planes to
experience turb even though they are well above the clouds.
Had a quick look at both the Washington & Bracknell forecasts (They look
after Nthn Hem). There was no CAT forecast for the area for either of them.
I also checked the winds and noted that they were pretty weak (<60kt).
However, both Bracknell & Washington had areas of CBs in the area you
mentioned. My guess is that you experienced CAT (turb) due to CBs. (Not sure
of exact time of your flight but max CB activities is ~12z)
As David mentioned, radar would have alerted the captain to what was
happening and he was skilful enough to pinpoint when turb was about to start
and end. Also mentioned by Peter, reports by other planes or talking to the
Air Traffic Controllers would have given the captain the heads up.
Hope this helps,
Tuan (Melb)

Hi all.
I am new to the list and weather stations so please excuse my lack of
knowledge.
Currently I am locating a weather station at my place of residence and I
also have one some 150kms away which sends its data back via VHF radio. Like
a lot of sites this data will end up on my web site.
What I want to know is on some of these web sites they include forcasts,
pictures etc from BOM and I was wondering how this goes with copyright etc.
I would like to include some lightning strike stuff, sat pictures and
rainfall radar stuff. Can anyone give me a place where I can get this kind
of stuff either at a small cost etc or for free? I have found a supplier of
a piece of hardware that couples with a computer can do lightning strike
info and may look at this at some stage.
Regards, Peter

Hi Peter,
I am not that sure myself. I once had the belief that the data is not
copyright, only the presentation of it.
Please do not take my answer as being correct.

Hey Rhett,
Absolutely fantastic photos you've got there! I just love that guster!!!!!
Michael Bath, Rodney Wallbridge and I were chasing on Saturday and watched
it develop and move over the Gold Coast. Thunder was constant from our
location at Ocean Shores! We tried to chase it but couldn't make it in time.
I'm really glad you got to take some pictures for us! I've put some photos
up on my site of the storms that day. They start a little over half way down
the page, at Parrots Nest.
http://www.lexicon.net/stormboy2002/photography/dave13.htm
I'm pretty sure this is the storm you saw on the Gold Coast:
http://www.australiasevereweather.com/photography/photos/2002/1130de11.jpg
However it may have been a storm that occured a bit further south of what
you saw. Anyway, thanks for sharing those pictures with us!!

Things have been a bit busy of late, hence the lack of emails, but the next
few days holds out enough interesting WX to trigger an email.
First today, and catching me somewhat by surprise, looks like it could get
rather thundery over the east half/two thirds of Victoria. It is not easy
picking the line of the trough which sits over Victoria, but one suspects
the area near and east of the trough line will probably be the focus for
much of the storm activity. Interestingly, the pressure in recent hours has
been falling through central Victoria but rising or steady to the west and
east, suggesting the trough is currently deepening down through central
parts. At the same time, for those further north, the strong upper trough
from the bight has linked up very nicely with moisture associated with the
low and convection near Timor, with plenty of storms through the centre etc.
Further out, Victoria and Tasmania could get a significant summer cold
outbreak on Wednesday/Thursday. GASP, NOGAPS and UK models are all going for
a good SW flow (somewhat cyclonic) with thickness values below 540 reaching
into southern Victoria. Such a set up would see heavy squally showers in the
south, with a good chance of cold air thunderstorms and small hail (also
snow down to ~1000m in the south).
And then... for the west the moisture currently streaming inland will
continue to build, and the passage of the upper trough around mid week and
the establishment of general north to northeast flow could well form the
ingredients for a very thundery period across much of the NT and Western
Australia. At very long range watch out for a possible linkage of this
moisture into the next front/mid latitude trough around Saturday for the
southeast.

I managed to get this (somewhat flawed) panorama of the gustfront(s)
associated with the storm that went through southern areas of Sydney on
Saturday afternoon (at about 1800 EDT). It's taken from the cricket
ground we had just vacated at Taren Point.

Hi everyone,
Today at about 3pm we had a hail storm here at St Clair NSW (near
Penrith).. it lasted for about 10 mins max with hail the size marbles
and a bit bigger covering the ground. I don't know how cold it got but
it became very chilly indeed. The storm has since passed and now we
have blue skies again!!

Hey Jimbo, i wouldn't call it a 'hail event' :), although there was 2
minutes of heavy rain with tiny hail, im surprised you missed out it must
have edged just southeast of you. Anyway i have some nice footage of it in
its earlier stages near Camden and approaching with a long lasted lowering
that looked menacing to say the least!.

Had several lightning strikes today that have
started fires in the area and with very little rainfall is a bit scary. At
approx 4pm while at Springhurst on my school bus a strike went to ground at/on
the SW edge of the Chiltern forest and appeared to be burning fairly well as we
got a little closer. Strong smell of smoke while in the Chiltern
area.
Point 2 mm scored here up to now
(5.25pm).

Hi every1,
Further to David's post...about 10.30 this morning I was surprised (although
it had been humid and the odd Acca about) to hear thunder!
Popped out with the digital camera the school bought (Kodak DC5000) and
snapped a depressingly low-topped Cb, which seemed to be responsible.
The trough line seemed to be further east of me as the day wore
on...alas..anda check of the lightning tracker confirmed it getting nastier
way east.
No rain but a thunderday nonetheless!!!
Cheers,

P.S. This may be old news to WA people but I got an email from another list
about a web cam at Busselton...

Matt and Rune,
I am never surprised we miss action although we had substantial rain in the
27mm on Friday which is quite a significant fall. Rune what did you get all
up from that 24 hour period being so close?

G'day David & All,
Some good thunderstorm cells moved thru NE of
Devonport last night, producing some excellent
displays. The build-up started late arvo and became
active around 8pm and continued to after midnight.
Just waiting now to see what this good looking low can
do when it hits - the rain band is sitting on the west
coast atm.
Andrew.

Pretty similar on Friday with 29mm, Saturday scored 10.5mm (this is the
one that skirted you?) It did seem to be heaviest to my southwest and over
the Blacktown area, Doonside sounds about right Matt, was there nice
rotation associated? from a distance all i could make out was the scuddy
cloud underneath it which was swirling quite a bit

Hi all. Please excuse my posting if this is a bit off topic.
I am in need to buy a weather station and have found plenty outside
Australia but not a huge variety (web sites that is) of info. I did find one
company in Sydney selling Pete Bros stuff but it was around $400 on top of
the price out of the states even after money conversion.
I actually need 2. I have however built one since I had access to a lathe
etc. this one is remote to my location and transmits data back via radio so
it doesn't have to have an interface but I am interested if there are any
out there with no inteface but able to get data out of say with a serial
connection.
and the second is for my main office. I need to measure the usual temp (only
has to be outside, inside is a bonus), humidity, barometric pressure, rain
and how heavy if possible, wind direction and speed and thats about it. I
would like a display with this one and the ability to store some info if my
computer is offline but normally to be hooked up to my computer and sending
the data to it. I write software myself so I would like the data format to
be avialable etc...
Gee not much hey? I wonder if I can get one to iron my shirts. Anyway where
in Aus is there a site or place I can contact likely to have quality for
dollars at a fair price?
regards, Peter

G'December to All:
A vigorous
Canadian cold front is plowing through Texas, making for a good temp contrast.
As of 12:53 A.M. Wed. Dec. 4th: In Amarillo it was 20F(-6.6C) with light snow
and a wind chill of 4F(-15.5C) while at the same time Brownsville had 72F(22.2C)
and fair skies. (More cool news for ya'll). Tuesday in Mena was a cloudy, raw
day with steady rain and a very chilly N/NE wind with temps hanging around
38F(3.3C). We've a chance of rain/sleet/snow flurries this morning--so I guess
you can't keep Old Man Winter away forever. I guess you can imagine yourself
here and getting cooled off and I can dream about being over in Aus and getting
a tan on a beach!!!
BTW, Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to
Everyone!
Yours David (Looking for Snowflakes)

Ironically, the fires in Sydney gave a one-in-a-million view of the
eclipse late this afternoon to anyone who was east of them.
I was on the train at Kogarah (3 hours after leaving North Sydney!) when
I first sighted it through the Alford's Point fire. Amazing - you could
just look straight at it as it was setting into the plume, eventually
becoming as dull as the smoke itself. I'm extremely disappointed that I
didn't have my camera!
Not surprisingly the synoptic setup for today's (and no-doubt the rest
of the week's) fires is text-book for the east coast. Snowing at Mt
Hotham by late afternoon, mild and windy on the tablelands, hot, dry and
windy on the coast.
Andrew.

Hi Ben,
I looked only sideways at the screen on the back of the camera
