Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Hi all, Happy Spring everyone!!! May your thunderstorms be rotating, and your hail be denting (but not too denting...), may the CGs carve their images into your eyes and may all your chases be successful. And what a better way to open up the first day of spring with a chance of storms! It looks like the storms will form further west of here though (ie, Downs), and then move over late tomorrow as storms and rain. The timing of the trough for SE QLD is not quite ideal, it looks to come through early Sunday - so that is a little annoying, but oh well. Shear is impressive, but not quite as strong as last week, 20-25kn NW at 850, 40-45kn NW at 700, 40-45kn WNW at 500, 120kn WNW at 300 - but we're on the wrong position of the jet (northern edge), I prefer to be on the southern edge - it also means are air is colder at 300. But the 500 temps will once again be quite cold (high negative teens), and DPs were up to the mid teens this evening, but have now gone down (12/12 here), due to night cooling. I can't chase tomorrow arvo...so perhaps Murphy's forecast is for a good day. Also, we have $20,000 worth of windows sitting beside our currently constructed house at the farm...so Murphy might send some golfball hail over Grandchester...(perhaps a chaser would be kind enough to counteract that and sit there to ensure hail falls elsewhere?) The other possibility is all the activity basically moves over the northern agriculutral districts as the low weakens which is what BOM seems to be going for at the moment. We did not follow, but rather observed from a distance as the storm was in the national park. The storm was isolated, not a cloud in the way, with huge boiling masses constantly going up on the back end, very similar in appearance to this storm, but with much stronger updraughts, and not as nicely sunlite as this photo. http://www.sydneystormchasers.com/pictures/Matt/2000/tdu-11-28-00-13.htm Anyway... I suspect it was a supercell, had all the characteristics. Can possibly the BoM let us know? The storm died very shortly after sunset. The storm developed in the region near the Putty Road but was weak for some time. Then it began to really take off as it neared the coast during the late afternoon. In fact it literally sent updraughts at the rear which were quite strong. Then it slowly began to show backshearing despite the very strong wind shear. It remained sunlit for quite sometime and with the angle we had, it looked awesome reflecting brilliantly in the setting sun. Photographs will show this. The crispness of this reminds me of some of the photos I have seen in the US. Brilliant stuff... This was an example of how important it is to have dry air aloft. I do believe it was a supercell but we should wait until this is confirmed. The soundings including the lower level backing certainly supports this possibility. One of the unfortunate things is that the road network we faced was hopeless. We didn't even bother trying to chase it. I was surprised that there was reasonable backbuilding though as the storm did not move as fast as I expected in that region... I suppose the main part of the jet was further north. It was also unfortunate that the air around the Hunter was fairly dry and there was a fairly strong cap. Anyway, we shall see what damage may have been caused by the storm. Hi,
well after a lovely sunny morning, it is now very overcast with winds increasing in speed.  No rain at the moment, but it is possible for later in the day, especially looking towards the west.

Tim, what is it like over Maitland way, Cessnock is at its usual state, windy but not much else?

Hi Carolyn,

Clouding up a little bit in Sydney (Beacon Hill - Northern Beaches) at the moment. (Dont know the technical name for the clouds but they look like they have a bit of rain in them - very white on top). Had a great view from my back patio of the storms at sea last night. They were in the SE so unfortunately not the beauty that went through Wyong.

Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Very true re the police attitude and their propensity to close the roads, and the fact that you then get stranded or face a very long detour. Snow chasing in the Blue Mountains is likely to lead to some frustrations that could out weigh the fun. A personal experience to illustrate. The last time I was up there, and there was any snow (late 70's from memory) the police closed the GWH at about 2am at Penrith to stop people going up at all. I found out later that the only people that they let through after that were residents up to Blackheath, but not further. I later deduced that I had passed Blackheath apparently just before the police came out to close the road with barriers there. I knew nothing of what was happening at the time of course. There was quite a bit of snow on the roads and it was fun slow driving through it (plenty of rally experience, no problem, and I had chains in the boot anyway. We used to go skiing so often I eventually bought a set, it was cheaper than hiring them every other week). In any case, by the time I got to Mount Lambie, I was a bit tired and figured a pie and pees and a coffee would go down well. So I pulled in, noting with some surprise that the place was chokers with trucks. Seemed a bit odd, even for the conditions. Truckies are supposed to be made of sterner stuff thought I ! Anyway, in finding a place to park, it dawned on me, that come to think of it, I hadn't seen any other traffic, going either way for "ages". Very odd. So, get out, enter the cafe. Bloody cold, howl of a wind. Time, about 3:30 / 4am, memory is a bit dim on that. I get inside, and walk up to the counter. Girl looks up, says nothing, looks down again. So, since she has seen me, I order the aforementioned, whilst looking around, during which time I notice two rather beefy guys sitting at a table down the end, apparently playing chess, and assume they are a couple of truckies. The girl (mid twenties, nothing special, had been sitting down reading a mag), gets herself up in a manner suggestive of not particularly being pleased at having been disturbed, and rather off handedly says "what'satluv....." So, with the completion of the "luv...." I turn to her and says, "I would like a pie and pees, no sauce, and a coffee, white, no sugar, thanks,.... luv" (with only a very slightly amusing inflection, if you know what I mean - try your luck - any port in a "storm" type thing !). Suddenly,..... one of the gorillas at the table turns around, and rather "arrogantly" ... "demands" to know who the hell I am !! Thinking it might be the young lady's other half, I instantly decide discretion may be the better part of valour. Upon turning to face him, I notice his parker has splayed open as he has half turned around in the chair, and his gun is in full view. Whereupon he stood up and came over to me, and asked where I had come from (they had seen the lights when I drove in). I explained up from Sydney. He said that was crap, the road was closed. I said it wasn't, after all, I was here. A short silence ensued. The other officer got up and came over, and wanted a report of the road, all the way up. So, after pie pees and coffee were provided, I was "invited" back to their table for a "quiet chat" (read interrogation, well, so it seemed). They turned out to be quite reasonable. They were Bathurst cops and had driven up earlier in a 4 WD Toyota Land cruiser, and had no idea what the conditions were to the east of Mount Lambie. The discussion was cordial, and a complete road report was made. Then they wanted to know where I was going, which was Bathurst. So, deciding that I was able to continue, they told me to take it easy, and report in at Bathurst Police Station when I got there. This allowed them to sit tight, nice and warm !! They didn't need to go on to (Katoomba I think it was) nor patrol back towards Bathurst, since I had effectively done it (the eastern part) and was just about to do the western part for them ! To sweeten the deal, they even paid for my second coffee ! Find a cop that will offer you a deal like that today ! Anyway, the trip west was a no brainer. I considered at the time that they were being overly cautious in closing the road, but I was a lot younger then too. The road is better and the cars are better and easier to drive - under normal conditions that is. Over those last 25 odd years though, public driving skills have got worse not better. Couple that with the legal mine fields today of "duty of care" and all that, it is hardly surprising that they close roads these days at the drop of a single flake. So, snow chasing could get interesting, or frustrating, depending more on the attitude of the local police, than the weather. Much as it may be nice to fantasise about activity of such magnitude, I think it reasonable to assume that the aforementioned numebrs are the result of a dodgy AWS. For a early spring day was it rather warm, with the fog burning off, no wind and a nice deep blue sky above things could turn out nicely. After a bit of rain in Colac on Saturday, the ground was damn and with the sun warming it up nicely it was only a matter of time, and where, for the Cu to develop. Heading off to church at 11am Sunday with my Uncle I noticed that yes I was correct and come nice 'turkeys' where bubbling up to the WSW of Colac, and I said to my uncle we could get a storm perhaps sometime ttoday and he calmly agreed. After church there was Towering Cu everywhere and one went Cb out to the WNW towards Alvie. So I I took my camera (Doh only 2 or 3 shots left!) and head off to one of my favourite viewing points, Red Rock; an extinctt Volcano about 15km WNW of Colac. So I got there and paning around there was Cu Towers everywhere, but the Cb I saw had rapidly died :(, but a new one was bellowing up to the SSW or Red Rock and it was raining from it. I turning on the walkman and put it on the "lightning tracker" am band to listen for the crackles. I waited and waited, nothing not a thing! Not happy, but I took a few pics and headed back into town. I drove around the outskirts of the town and well I was lucky, out of one of the Cb "Calvus" (?) out dropped a nice funnel! So with the last shot I framed it, hopefully it'll turn out! Well the Cu died as the day got older, I'd say the CAPE weakend dramatically. Currenttly back in Ballarat it's nice and mild with a fair amound of Cu so perhaps it could all happen again as another front knockls on Victoria's western door. Melbourne was looking at a record high mean min for winter. The seasonal mean (combination of max + min) was running equal to record levels at Melbourne with 2 days to go. Sydney, as Don mentioned, was 2nd to 1988. Perth Airport's mean min was the third-lowest on record (and lowest since 1960), impressive given that there's a bit of an urbanisation signal there. The mean max was well above normal but not in record territory. For the nation as a whole, the maximum temperature anomaly was +0.76 degrees, the fifth-highest on record (1996 being the highest). The minimum temperature anomaly was -0.10 degrees - it was quite a cool winter (minimum-wise) in much of northern and western Australia. Looking at state averages for the mean winter max, Queensland's ranked 2nd, NSW 3rd, Victoria and Tasmania 4th. Notable rainfall averages for winter were set in SA (7th wettest on record) and SW WA (5th driest on record). I think you meant to say September records? (46.7 was the Hawker September record, so you haven't made a mistake on that). Worth mentioning that the Adelaide (Kent Town) figure is also above the highest September daily total in the 140-year record at the former West Terrace site. They're not directly comparable but they're pretty close (on opposite sites of the Adelaide CBD). Having queried it with the SA Regional Office, there is no basis in fact (as far as we know) for media reports of falls exceeding 200mm in the Wilpena area. (Wilpena itself got 125, and I wouldn't be surprised if the upper reaches of the Pound did get close to 200, but there are no gauges there). The front has slowed dramatically. Some areas have had 20mm today to the south. Interesting to see how this area of precipitation to the west develops could get a moderate fall from it. Soil is way above saturation point and walking past 1st creek today it was running quite high after that downpour after lunch and it had very high silt content. With further rain at the end of the week, flooding is looking likely as dam levels have risen significantly and the ground is saturated. This all depends on how strong the end of the week system ends up being of course. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ X-Originating-IP: [152.91.9.46] From: "michael king" To: aussie-weather at world.std.com Subject: RE: aus-wx: Snow Pics: Taralga 27/8 Date: Mon, 03 Sep 2001 18:20:32 +1000 X-OriginalArrivalTime: 03 Sep 2001 08:20:33.0186 (UTC) FILETIME=[4CFF0020:01C13451] Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com

Thanks for the pictures. I was in transit along the Hume around the time your photos were taken, and while Sutton Forest, where I was stopped for about 2 hours, had about 10 cms in that time, I can see why the hills to the north west of Goulburn appeared blanketed and caked in a much thicker layer of the white stuff.

Interesting tale Peter and well told.  I recall seeing the forecast for snow (on the previous Friday, the 24th) for later Sunday, early Monday for Goulburn and half thinking about chucking the chains in the boot, knowing I'd be travelling back from Sydney to Canberra in the early hours of Monday.  If I had, I wonder whether the police would have let someone travel on the Hume with chains, or whether their over cautious attitude or concern about chains damaging the road would have prevented me utilising the chains.

Derby AP broke its admittedly short 14 year record September minimum of 12.4 Saturday morning with a reading of 11.7, but then broke it again Sunday morning with a reading of 9.1 -- pretty cold for a coastal location 17 degrees from the equator. More significantly, Port Hedland AP broke a 53 year record of 8.4 with a 7.7 reading Saturday morning, while Marble Bar broke a 44 year record reading of 8.3 with a 7.3 on Sunday morning. Mt Isa AP may have had a record low September minimum Sunday morning with a (rounded) 1 degree. The record is 1.1. Personally i think we should just take what mother nature gives us, if we start trying to control things the outcome could be even worse than what we started with! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Patrick Tobin" To: Sent: Monday, September 03, 2001 10:22 PM Subject: Re: aus-wx: Rain making.... > Thanks Kevin - interesting.... > > I then followed a link to this article - which would definitely not be > appreciated by subscribers to this list..... > > http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99991101 > > Patrick > -----Original Message----- > From: Kevin Phyland > To: aussie-weather at world.std.com > Date: Monday, 3 September 2001 22:15 > Subject: aus-wx: Rain making.... > > > >Hi every1, > > > >Found this on the New Scientist page: > > > >http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99991219 > > > >Food for thought or something just to chew over... > > > >Cheers, > >Kevin from Wycheproof. > > > >_________________________________________________________________ > >Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp > > > > +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ > > To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com > > with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your > > message. > > -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ > > +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ > To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com > with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your > message. > -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ > +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+ To unsubscribe from aussie-weather send e-mail to:majordomo at world.std.com with "unsubscribe aussie-weather your_email_address" in the body of your message. -----------------------jacob at iinet.net.au------------------------------ From: "Andrew" To: Subject: aus-wx: Thunder Down Under 2000 Date: Mon, 3 Sep 2001 22:43:34 +1000 X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.00.2615.200 X-OriginalArrivalTime: 03 Sep 2001 12:47:00.0526 (UTC) FILETIME=[86317CE0:01C13476] Sender: aussie-weather-approval at world.std.com Reply-To: aussie-weather at world.std.com
Hi Everyone,

Well time (and motivation) has finally allowed me to get back into writing the reports on Thunder Down Under 2000 and for those of you who don't already know that is what some of us term the 2-3 week chase undertaken by Aussie chasers during late spring/early summer which usually covers the three eastern states and about 5000km per week.  Anyway - Day 5 of my chase can now be read about and pics seen at this address.........

Special thanks to Jane for putting that up for me. :-)

Regards

Baw Baw this morning, with gusts to 69 knots and 193mm of rain falling in the hour between 0630 and 0730. Much as it may be nice to fantasise about activity of such magnitude, I think it reasonable to assume that the aforementioned numebrs are the result of a dodgy AWS. (Baw Baw is notorious for bad rainfall data - typically generating spurious rainfall obs from melting snow a couple of days after a cold outbreak - but I suspect this one might have other problems). We were watching this storm, but didn't really think much of it. At about 5:15pm it was passing about 10 km south of us. The base was elevated (but not a high storm), and had some small inflow bands, outflow was wrapping around and even some noticeable banding. There was quite a bit of scud around also, but no lowerings (having limited experience in identifying cloud features, I would have to pass to Matt for a better description here). Overall the storm appeared multicellular, but the last cell must really have taken off, because when we were looking at it, there was very little precip. visible. Hopefully a sign of things to come this spring...BRING IT ON!
